lol i literally found this in 3 seconds on google.
http://home.nycap.rr.com/hhotspot/sr_vs_kat.htm
however, there is probably a much better writeup on this found on none other than zilvia.net.
SEARCH!
there is no definitive answer on this, there are die hard sr guys and die hard ka-t guys, it all depends on your budget, the purpose of the vehicle, and what YOU want to do with the car.
i highly doubt anyone else will spoon feed you this information.

Unicol: A+ for effort, but that ad is super out dated. As it says there ar no manis for SOHCs which is untrue.
SR20driver: It's really up to you as there are some really powerful and fast KA-ts and SRs.
I'm rocking the KA24ET myself. :bigok:

I would suggest searching ka-t.org for KA-t info.

you will have to start building internals in the KA for it to handle a lot of boost SR's can take a beating if tuned right....you can ask steveshadows about that...he posted some ungodly numbers on stock internals....KA-T's have a rep for blowing so look to spend some cash just to make it handle more boost.....then again it depends on what type of numbers you are looking to put down and what the car will be used for KA-T i would imagine wouldnt be bad for DD easier to source replacement parts and such....when i had my SR it wouldnt even crank over in the cold....plus no AC

Tssss...
True sr has endless aftermarket support compared to the ka-t. But that doesnt really matter unless your building a all out 900hp ka-t. Ka-t after market is plentiful, just not sr plentiful. Even if you wanted lets say, oh a 600hp ka, there is plenty aftermarket. Point is, i seriously dont see you building a fire breathing ka or sr so w/e your trying to build, you wont have any problems finding parts or info on either one. If money is your main concern then slap a turbo kit on your ka with a good tune and you'll be fine.
Not trying to be biased cuz imho both ka and sr are hella whack.

Sr20:Comes w/ a turbo that your going to have to replace one day anyway if your serious at all about power, no more after market support than a KA, and a block made of soda cans.
KA:
Iron block which is stronger than the SR block right off the bat, easy to make more HP than a stock SR using stock SR parts, just as much after market support as the SR, w/ ppl backing it such as AMS.
you tell me lol
CORRECTION^^
Thank you Greek and 3-240 for perpetuating the misinformation on the internet about KAs and SRs.

in my opinion the ka-t is the better choice but that is because it fits what I want to do and my budget for the most part. In my case I can afford to buy an extra ka and build it over time. What I can't do is drop 2k or more and the money to install it all around the same time, found that out the hard way with a rb. As far as budget I figure just on the engine I will spend around 2200-2500. Sounds expensive, but for that price I will be:
1. on a fresh built engine
2. it is totally balanced and bullet proof
3. on stand alone fuel and spark mgt.( megasquirt )
4. making around 350-400hp ***and torque
5.all the supporting factors will be there. ie ( new motor mounts, radiator, plugs wires, high pro fuel pump) basically all the stuff you don't think about untill you are about to drop the motor in.
I figure to do the same with an sr it would cost me a lot more. But, then again I am doing all my own work so it makes the ka project cheaper.
In the end do what you like because this argument is endless and you have to drive and repair what ever you get.

torquey as hell
IRON BLOCK
can find parts for them dirt cheap
can find blocks dirt cheap
i have a SOHC for free lol
can handle around 6-7 PSI with stock internals
low aftermarket support...(hell even megan doesnt make headers for htis thing lol)
timing chain issues are constant if not tuned properly
Sr:
stock turbo
higher HP in a stock block than KA,
minimal tuning since engine is built to handle said turbo
aftermarket support is ridiculously good
expensive
expensive
aluminum...which has its ups and downs

Both have very good support especially for most application. If you were go all out anyway, you would be either paying some to do most of the work and $$$ or you would do most fabbing yourself so then you would not even ask this question.
KA-t is a very good site to read up on. Very informative. But a lot Ka-t guys are about drag racing so whatever you are trying to do, pick a motor that more commonly used in the sport so you can chit chat and pick up more tips and knowledge from the people that are ACTUALLY AT THE TRACK, not just internet folks who goes. SR this or KA THAT.

Ok...higher HP in stock block than KA? If you put a T25 on a KA, stock side-mount, stock boost, you'd make more power over an SR. Low aftermarket support? Dude you can find headers for them for under $150 shipped.
So say you have a good KA engine already. With the prices SR's are going for nowadays, it would probably cost around $2300 for a complete running setup. $2300 on a KA would get you upgraded internals and a nice sized turbo.

throw in some forged pistons into a KA, and you've got yourself a pretty damn durable motor. When you compare similar setup SRs vs KAs, you'll notice the KA makes way more torque in the mid range. Throw on a set of 248 248 cams and it'll stary fairly flat up top.
Not to say SRs are not bad motors, becaues they really arn't. The design is great. Its a square motor (1:1 stroke to bore) that can be fairly rev happy with the right parts. The biggest pro for SR20s is the endless aftermarket support for them. 2.0L also saves gas on the roads haha

plenty of pros and cons with either motor as stated above, but for originality, ka-t ftw. its not your average build and finding the parts is like a fun little easter egg hunt... your going to have smog problems either way so dont let that be a deciding factor

what part of stock did u miss...does the 240sx KA come STOCK with with turbo...no...does the SR DET (mind u i know theres DE sr's reason why i clarified) ...YES
thats what i was sayin...focourse the KA would get higher number with a bolt on turbo...obviously....even stock internals can run 10PSI without any mods...
what i was talking about was stock SR, no after market B.S. and stock KA no after market B.S.....

its pretty impossible to compare a non turboed KA to an SR when he's talking about SR vs. KA-T.
Kind of impossible to have a KA-T without aftermarket parts.

I've seen SR's handle 30PSI on stock block, but I've also seen some KA-T's handling up to 30PSI stock block as well...its all upon the tuning, not necessarily the engine itself.
And if you build a KA-T correctly, it can be nearly bulletproof because of the iron block (although if you build any engine correctly they can be nearly bulletproof as well, but Iron Block>Aluminum Block).
Oh and to the above person about SR's making more power than KA's stock vs stock KA's make more.
SR20DE = rated ~120 hp (around there)
KA24DE = rated ~155 hp (around there) *notice I said RATED
However add the handicap of a turbo and of course the SR will make more power soley(sp?) because of the turbo.
And anybody who says KA-T are not fast deserved to be slapped. Ivan of KA-T.org has broken into the low 9's with his KA-T...so chew on that
All in all SR's are good high revving motor and KA-T's are good torquey (sp?) motors. Its up to personal preference...me personally is KA-T and KA24DE ITB's. :naughty:
My .02 cents
FYI: Next time SEARCH!!

Agreed, if you want responsive brute force torque do the KA-t if you want smooth top end power do the SR. That's all there is to say.

I personally don't even feel that this is the case (not to dissagree with you racepar1). IMO both engines have all the potential in the world to make good power when turbo'd. I thought about building a ka24-t (and personal preference just to be different) but I'm a bit of a noob as this is my first turbo car so I went SR just for an easier transition to a reliable turbo. It is simply preference.
