so i decided to go ahead and do a full build thread on my s13 being as this car has been put together from scratch. literally. i bought the car for $200 from a friend of mine named tony.the car had a blown motor and needed some major bodywork. so the work began.heres how it looked like when i first got it
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/1.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/2.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/3.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/4.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/5.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/6.jpg
so first thing was first. i tried to get the car started. maybe drivable and figured id start from there. after a little trial and error. found out that the motor was just not salvageable........ during this stage the sanding also began....
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/7.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/8.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/9.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/10.jpg
then the real bodywork began.... i started prepping the wholebody for primer and trying to stud weld out all of the dents. im not the biggest fan of using mass quantities of bondo so i made sure that it was a last resort.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/11.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/12.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/13.jpg

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/17.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/18.jpg
the trunk needed alot of work, there wass nothing but rust all over it. being as a new one was out of my budgett at the time. out the welder came. i welded the inside of the trunk with all new sheetmetal. and put metal glaze on over after i got it as smooth as i could. turned out pretty good
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/19.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/20.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/21.jpg
after much delaboration on what do do about the rear quarter panels. i decided that there was no other way other than to get wide fenders for the back. this would give it a much more aggressive look in the back and an all around better appearance.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/22.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/23.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/24.jpg
this stage is where i decided to devote the majority of my money. all new hks blow off valve, hks muffler, godspeed inercooler and piping, walboro fuel pump. and the infamous nissan silvia s14 sr20det.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/25.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/26.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/27.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/28.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/29.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/30.jpg
after alot of wiring issues. ordering a wiring dvd, and a month. mike and i had the motor in.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/31.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/32.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/33.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/34.jpg
i decided that if if i wanted to make this car look good at all it would need some new rims and tires. plus the fact that i could not get traction at the track if i had to with the stock rims and tires. so i ordered full set of sportmax rims just for the street and drag...... little heavier than i wanted but ohh well. it is a budgett build. they didnt have the color that i wanted although so i decided. what the hell. painting is what i do, so i put a factory bmw metallic silver paint job on them and left the lip chrome
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/35.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/37.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/36.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/38.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/39.jpg
i then ordered a nitto invo tires for the back from kyle at discount. what comes next is the area in wich i expect to hear the most critisizm. after much debate i decided to mold the bodykit in order to make it look cleaner all around and make it look not so half ass. yes i understand that if i wreck it it will be a pain to fix and all that yata yata yata. ohh well, its no loger a drift car and it is being molded correctly..........
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/40.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/41.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/42.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/43.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/44.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/45.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/46.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/47.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/48.jpg
so i started painting today: take a look
started out with a primer sealer, didnt get pics i forgot. then i put 2 "tacky" coats of paint on
heres the first 2 coats

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/186063182597_0_0.jpg
then here is the 3rd and fourth coats of base
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m227/bwake5/186063153541_0_0.jpg
when doing the coats, i like to spray alot of "drop coats" which means that i like to do real light coats that dont cover the whole area, i do this because it makes sure that the paint is distributed evenly and makes out for a much smoother look.
so then i put the my logo, and applied the clear coat, i put 4 coats of clear

before the comments start rolling in.

things i already know

i know the wheel fitment looks retarded for the widebody but the spacers are on the way.....(actual spacers)

yes i know molding widebody makes most of you cringe but its a street car and the whole car looks way cleaner molded IN MY OPINION

+Rep for doing your own work, with your own image of your car.

I hate molded shit. But it doesn't loook TOOO bad to me. Yet.

But still, kudos.

bwake 5
11-18-2007, 11:50 PM
thanks man i appreciate it. im not a big fan of huge molding myself. yet i wanted the body to look like it came from the factory that way, in no way will i ever mold the rear bumper on or the fenders or anything like that lol....

Great work man. The way you put that wide body on is way cool.
Keep it up.

It looks like legit work went in to it, all that really matters is that you're enjoying yourself while you are doing it all.

Nicely done. Looks like its going to be a sweet ride when you're done.

okay, i laughed at that saturn. but who wouldn't.

+rep on the bodywork, though. not so sure about the molded quarters, those are probably going to crack after a while. nice build all in all.

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 12:47 AM
thanks for the rep... i do appreciat it.......as for the fenders. what is going to make them crack id like to know? being as there is no stress in that part of the quarter panel and there is no flex points being as the rivots are an inch apart all the way around. and then considering that they are molded with the same material that is used on speed boats that can withstand hitting waves at 150mph?

just curious?

BustedS13
11-19-2007, 12:50 AM
1.) speed boats are made out of solid fiberglass, not two different matereials held together using fiberglass like glue
2.) vibration and potholes SING YOUR DOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

it does look good, and i could be wrong. but i'd bet on it.

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 12:56 AM
its all good, thanks for your input......

agree to disagree......

no offense taken

+20 for another person making very use of there very own garage like me :) lol and what did u use to paint the wheels they look really good ,

firelizard
11-19-2007, 09:14 AM
+1 for total D.I.Y.

I dig moulded quarters because it looks very clean having no rivets. But the risk of cracking definitely must be acknowledged, I wouldn't be too surprised to see it crack if you drove it more than going to the grocery store and back.

Good job on a build thread were something was actually built.

Molded, eh, as long as you like it, it's cool. :)

Plans for the rest?

By "street car" you mean it's never gonna see a track?

Silvia_S13
11-19-2007, 10:46 AM
yah that looks super budget. u went all out engine wise, bought over fenders, then weak wheels, and stock front and rear bumpers? LOL

yeah it is a budget build......i spent money were money is needed. so no i didnt pay for brand name rims. sure they are a little heavy but they are for street use. i throw on different ones at the track anyway so what does it matter? and yes i did keep the stock bumpers on. know why? because personally i love the way the body looks and no offense to anyone i didnt want to rice the car out..... its just not my style, im just building a "clean" car. not a drift slut or putting some boo-boo ass bodykit on there to turn it into the batmobile.........

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 12:37 PM
the saturn is my brothers old car

this one goes to the 1/4 mile and may try out auto-x just for shits and gigles.... i have another fastback that ive been tinkering with for drifting....... on this one im gonna leave the body clean and simple. finish up the suspension and put a cage in it......then ill prolly pull the motor back out, paint the engine bay like i wanted to. build the internals and go from there on up

yeah dude, we love riced out shit here, you totally should have done that.

BustedS13
11-19-2007, 05:32 PM
i'm suddenly tempted to try the roll-on paint job on my non running pile. maybe pull the fenders while i'm at it. hmm.

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 05:34 PM
haha why roll on? soo much more work

unicoladron
11-19-2007, 05:45 PM
most of the aero i've seen on zilvia is actually clean, riced out shit would get flamed. but most of these guys have really clean origin or version select aero which looks better than oem, cept it's frp.

+1 rep on the clean body work and paint!

i personally like the way rivets look on over fenders, but it's good you're sticking to your guns and not letting anyone else dictate your decision.

11-19-2007, 07:51 PM
lol i dont mean to rag on bodykits, cuz i like alot of them, just thought it was funny cuz ppl think that i was going the cheap route by not getting one where the truth is i would rather keep my car looking stock and simple this time. price didnt determine that

fromxtor
11-19-2007, 08:02 PM
Looks good for a DIY deal, might want to consider front wide fenders also as the 50mm in the rear are alot wider than the front. ;)

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 08:04 PM
prolly gonna go with s15 front and get wider conversion fenders

driftxing
11-19-2007, 08:11 PM
What's your technique to paint?

Like what do psi do you spray your primer, base and clear at? What kind of gun? I always spray primer with too much pressure and get an orange peel look and clear is just the same as spraying primer, so i want to practice. You can sand off primer, but not so much clearcoat. Looks nice. Lot's of body work

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 08:20 PM
40psi for primer sealer
40psi for base coat
35psi for clear coat

side note- if the worst you have is orange peel then just work on getting enough clear on the car. then you can wetsand with 1500 grit followed by 2000 grit and buff with a 3M buffing compound.... look like glass.

i have a "sharpie" gun bought at my local paint supplier, a 33 gallon compressor pushed by 2 hp, and a air regulator to keep all moisture out

bwake 5
11-19-2007, 08:21 PM
if the primer is reduced enough it shouldnt come out with orange peel. i had the orange peel effect before and it was because i didnt have the primer reduced enough

driftxing
11-19-2007, 08:29 PM

Just reduce it so it comes out smooth. Use enough pressure to atomize it decently. I made the mistake of going too low pressure once, sanding the mess sucked.:ugh:
