View Full Version : Cold start idle...when it's not cold anymore

Searched, but didn't find my answer specifically...
So lately, I'd start my car and like usual, the idle is raised to warm up the motor (sr) faster, which is about 1800rpm. Then that's it; it's 1800rpm for the rest of my car trip, warmed up and all. Another thing, if I were on the freeway and coasted on neutral long enough, my temp needle would drop to almost "COLD" and then when I'd exit or put it back in gear, it'd slowly raise again.
Can't be the IACV because I'd adjust it and nothing happens, and I have no leaks of any sort (rad or vacuum). Everything's hooked up right. Is it some cold start sensor/switch problem?

The warm up idle is controlled by the coolant temp sensor, the ECU reads the voltage, converts it to a value in the map, and then adjusts the IACV valve to alter the idle. However, if the coolant temp sensor was bad you would have issues starting the car when it was cold, this sounds like your IACV isn't working properly.
To adjust your idle, disconnect the tps, turn on the car and screw in the IACV screw until the idle drops, if the idle doesn't drop its possible that your IACV is malfunctioning. You can remove the intake runners and unbolt the IACV and try cleaning it.
Also just an FYI, the temp sensor for the gauge cluster is NOT the same as the coolant temp sensor for the ECU, though they are right next to each other.

Ok so I took off the throttle body and cleaned everything out with some carb cleaner. Put it back on and it changed nothing. I did notice, however, that there's a plugged off vacuum on the underside of where the intake piping would go onto. Where's that supposed to be connected to? I don't think that would be a culprit because it was idling at 750-800 before i even knew that was there.
Anyways here's a clip of what the idle does when i'm just sitting, and the car's warmed up. Sorry for the bad lighting, but you can make out the tach needle going from 2k down to 1.5k and back up.

Fixed it, the thermostat was stuck open. All other sensors and everything else was fine.
