View Full Version : DOHC (1991) to be installed in 1989 SOHC shell, help

Ok, I have been reading a lot on S14 DOHC engines being placed in SOHC cars and power steering lines need to be replaced. But I want to know the complete list of things DOHC to SOHC shell that need to be done please. Pretty please! thats s13 -> S13 aka a s13 shell that was sohc, getting upgraded (yeah i know, slightly)
from the DOHC engine and Tranny I managed to score the harness and ECU, however no MAF. do i need it? :loco:
I've wrenched on SOHC mostly, so i'm not really familiar with the differences. Thanks for your help zilvia.net

Hmm.. well.. I've done an S13 KA24DE into my S14 and another S13 DOHC into an '89... So IIRC...
*Yes you do need the DOHC MAF. It's different.
*You can make your SOHC throttle cable work w/ the DOHC, but it's actually too short. Same w/ the cruise control cable.
*IIRC... There's a couple brackets that are different between the S13 and S14 KA24DE's... but I can't remember which. I just remember I had to swap over one or two...
There wasn't a whole lot involved. I know there were things I missed, but it wasn't terribly hard to correct even after I had the engine was sitting in the engine bay... Good luck.

i have that swap a 89 240 with a 95ka in it. i know for sure that the sohc cruise control wont work and the TB cable works fine its a lil short but it works fine. and you do need a MAF

assuming ur KA is complete meaning has alternator power steering pump etc etc...
then all u need in ignition coil with mounting bracket and starter module on it
s13 DOHC ECU and harness, yes there is a difference between harness's if ur going MT or AT
even on the motor, if ur throttle body only has a single plug, then its an MT mototr, if it has a plus on the TPS body, and a second plug on the wire, thats an AT motor
headers bolt right onto the downpipe of the SOHC downpipe...
ur gonna need a DOHC s13 cluster ofcourse...
ohh and damn almost forgot Throttle cable, save urself a headache and just get the DOHC cable...
ahhh thats about it...
if ur going with power steering then ur gonna either need the power steering metal lower lines, reservoir/ with braket, hoses...
ummm thats it...

i recently just swapped in a s13 dohc into my 90 s13. heres my list of s13 parts:
dohc engine
dohc tranny
dohc wiring harness
dohc ecu
dohc cluster
dohc ignition coil
dohc power steering reservoir
somehow fit the s14 ps hard lines to work with my steering rack
s13 abs high pressure hose (there wasn't a non-abs hose i could find at the yard but this one works fine with a tight fit)
dohc throttle cable
dohc maf
dohc exhaust manifold (mine didn't come with one)
new water pump
new valve cover gasket
I just kept the white plug from my sohc wiring harness that comes from the ecu side that goes into the cluster. Not sure if it leads there but I just followed the write ups that people wrote to wire it up.
