View Full Version : KA-T guys, Question

Tried searching for this, but couldn't really come up with a definitive answer. I'm going KA-T next month, here is my current setup.
SSAC Bottom Mount (Not planning on boosting very high)
S13 SR T25
Walbro 255 LPH
SR 370cc Injectors
Front Mount
Z32 MAF
1G DSM BOV
The main question I need answered is: How much will the Z32 MAF compensate for the boost? Is it a sure thing that I will need an SAFC right away. I plan on getting one in about 3 months when I have some extra cash, but I need to get this car moving. I'd like to see what you guys opinion is on this. Thanks

the z32 MAF will be enough to max out your t25, so don't worr about that. AT LEAST a safC.. but i would be safe and go for a pre-tune from JWT, or enthaply.

thats a good setup, but without any fuel management it's pretty risky. Unlike the SR's, us KA guys were never boosted from the factory so the ecu's tuning isn't going to compensate very much at all regardless of a z32 mafs. I'd say 5-6psi at most until youre able to get an SAFC. however, if you want reliablity get your ecu reflashed by jim wolf or enthalpy and forget about an SAFC.

For a t25 you can get away with the n60 mafs and it will balance out the dr injectors. You can get away without the tuning like that but its still not recommended.

yeah runing a z32 with no type of tune, is a little risky. as louisdaboois stated..the ecu wont correct it that much to make it run well. if you can afford something better than a safc...get something else.

You can use safc for now at just stock boost and retarding the timing just to get it running and not beat it. Then get a RomTune for your setup. Either way your really need to have both for you still will use the SAFC for fine tuning and some other features like DECEL for open atm bov setup and other..

Sounds like I will be finding something to sell so I can afford an SAFC before I get going. Thanks for the input guys.

I assume you have a S13.
If so you have many affordable choices for ecu tunes and fuel managment.
Enthalpy and JWT are a bit expensive IMO. There are many tuning options available to you now. It would be dumb to just use a safc to tune your car since you do not have any control over timing + they are overpriced. Why get a safc 2 for 200 bucks when you can get a tuned ecu for 300 or a calum real time tuner for 375.
If you do not feel up to tuning your own car get a rom tune from efi specialist. He is currently having a group buy on tuned ecu's on ka-t.org

If you want to tune your own car I would recomond a calum real time ecu tune program. I think its about 375 bucks and you have pretty much full control over your engine and have datalogging capabilities.

Actually I have a 95 S14, OBD1.... I checked out efi specialist and it looks to be pretty good as does Calum. Where do I actually get a Calum real time? I did some google searching but couldn't really come up with anything. Link?
Thanks

first off, go to ka-t.org. you'll find everything there.
it's ALL in the tune. if it's too lean, it'll blow, if it's overly rich it will blow eventually.
an afc for your setup will be ok, as long as you either get a wideband to tune it yourself, or spend a few hours on the dyno tuning it. You will also need to retard your timing. you can do that by backing off the distributor a few degrees.
it really is in your best interest to get a tuned ecu like enthalpy or jwt. those account for the timing in their maps already. that way, your timing is only pulled under boost, not just all around. calum is great too, but you'll need to tune it yourself.

^^ what he says By all means get a rom tune but afc will do the trick for now. I have an Enthalpy tune on my KA-T and was running rich had to use SAFC just to get my AFR right.
