i believe RX7 is FR..and RX7 has too many troubles, it is fast, yes, twin-turbo ..but i would never recommend to buy the car, rotary engine f88ked up too fast, too many problems...
go to factory to fix the car every single week, so i have to pick him up once or twice every week or so...gosh...

That said, I hear the '93s were somewhat problematic (for whatever reason) and that '94s are a better choice if available.

Have fun with that thing man!

all i hear about Rx7's is all the problems, but i guess if you put enough money into the engine when you get it then most of the future problems can be prevented, or something like that. They're definitely kick ass cars though.

Maintaining it will cost more, but insurance is a different stroy. I was originally going to get an FD, then tried for a 97 240. The price difference for my insurance quotes was $7. That's right, the 240 would have saved me $7 per year compared to a car that had a KBB value 50% higher, plus an extra 100hp and no backseat. Go figure?!

My bro was a Rotary guy himself. He 1st gen and 2 FC's. 1st FC got crashed. 1st gen was sold. AND the other FC we still have. RX-7 CAN be problamtic. It just depends on the overall condition of the car, but also the extent MAINTANANCE. The earlier FC's had a few bugs in them, but were taken care of in the later FC's. As for FD's, I'm not to sure of. My friend's FD had a problem with his vacuum lines and turbo lag.

Now there is a 1988 10th Anniversary Edition FC with blown Apex Seals in front of my house.....that I AM SELLING. For pics and info, click here:

Okay... I don't mean to start anything with the Rotary haters here, but this seems to be a common misconception--

Rotaries (RX7s) are mainly "problematic" due to user error rather than design flaw.
For example, not changing the oil every ~2000 miles (+/- 500) on a rotary engine (rather than 3000 or more on piston-engine cars) or not making certain engine 'safety' mods (such as oil cooler upgrade) before turning up the boost etc. will lead, eventually, to engine failure. Most problems that you see on rotaries are caused by their owners not knowing how to properly maintain the engine rather than the engine being badly designed or made.

You are correct, it is technically SA, FC, FD. Many people though refer to the SA's as FB's just to keep it simple since most people have no idea what you are talking about if you refer to the SA. It's stupid, but that's just how it is

I would kill for an FD. I still plan on picking up an FC TII someday as a project car, just because rotaries are so cool and have a lot of potential.

Its Mid-Front Engine . I think, lots of misinfo on this thread . The engine sits a little further back than most front mounted cars, same with the 350Z, a nice compromise between FR and MR (MFR? )

Either way FDs 3rd Gen RX7s, whatever you call them, they are bad-ass and FCs are nice too, FDs aren't daily drivers though, unless you really take care of it, and like rebuilding.

It's funny cuz I read something on an RX7 forum, and some guy was at a grocery store, and over the PA they say someones car outside is on fire, immediately he knew it was his. I would have cried if I saw my car on fire .

actually your the one who looks stupid. The diagonals stuff was cuz someone said FD and someone thought they meant FR, but the RX7 is not an FR. It is a MFR or mid-front engine. You should get your facts straight before you start flaming people. I would understand if you said you "thought" it was an FR, since in a way it is, but you posted like you knew 110% sure that it was an FR, which it isnt. The engine is mounted just behind the wheels unlike other FR cars that are mounted over the wheels. It gives better weight ratio (thats why the RX7 has such a good one). There are more cars with the MFR layout, like the 350Z. I wouldn't of known what an MFR was till about a month ago, I read it in an SCC , but by just looking at the engine you can tell its mounted a little further back, but people don't talk much about MFR, since its nearly the same thing.

You seem to have the basic idea down. The FC's and I think the FD's came with factory oil coolers. Reliability mods for the FD includes, radiator, intercooler, downpipe, anything to bring the underhood temp down as that is the FD's weak point. Luckily the FC's dont suffer from the same problem. And your right about most problems being caused by owners not taking care of their cars. These engines are great but dont tolerate abuse. A/F ratio has to be watched to prevent leaning out.

I hate this whole mid-engine thing. MR2's have the engine over the rear wheels tranversely just like a FWD car does. And now people are calling Z's and stuff mid or front-mid just because it is mounted somewhat further back. How far away from the wheels does and engine need to be to be considered mid engined? It's just stupid.

Not sure on the FC's, but the only FD's with a stock oil cooler were the R-1 and R-2 package models, iirc.

Personally, if I had one (FD), an oil cooler, competition radiator, pre cat replacement (with a test pipe), ECU retune, and some intake splitter or something that always fails would be my first mods, and I wouldn't buy it unless I had the money to do those right away if it was to be a daily driver (and then I'd be saving for an intercooler and exhaust). Then I would consider the car reasonably reliable.

Anyone see the red FD in the reader's ride's section of the new SCC? Lots of mods, and no ecu retune. That's just asking for detonation. The basic rule for turbo rotories is for more than one change to it's breathing (intake, exhaust, pre cat removal, ect), a retune is required or you risk a lean burn detonation due to boost spikes when the secondary turbo spools. Just like was said above.

i hate it too. if the engine is under the hood in the front and the damn thing has a drive shaft and the front wheels are NOT powered as well, it's front engine rear wheel drive. i think it's a marketing thing. front engine means the engine is in front of the driver.

Not really. The engines well behind the front "axle" for better weight distribution. In fact the FC has 50.2F%/49.8R% distribution which is IMO pretty good.
