After seeing the custom center console here (http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?p=1642486#post1642486), (as i thought i was the only one that did it), i figured i'd post my little unique design.

I present to you: Scooby Doo Baseball.

This is my 3rd design thus far, i've done some DBZ & Mickey Mouse. And instead of using actual paper, i use fabric, which takes a little bit longer imo, especially with getting it to stick right and what not. Anywho, heres the pic. Enjoy.

do one with like really hot chicks that are almost naked, can't be fully naked since that might offend old people/soccer moms if they happen to be in your car. maybe maxim's website will have a nice picture.

And someone "just spoke their mind" w/the rep. It wasn't me, I leave my SN w/my reps now. The thing is, just b/c its legal for you doesn't mean its not offensive to someone else. Alchohol is legal, but for some people its an abomination....its just rep, don't sweat it.

I am not quite sure if this would work, but maybe you could get some type of clear resin and lay a few thin layers of it over the material to keep it from peeling off or from getting caught on something. Just an idea. www.uscomposites.com

What did you use to stick it on? My first thought was just to use some spray glue but if something worked better I'd love to know.

Spray adhesive would work without any problems. Auto upholstery shops use it no problem.

What about using resin over the material. I'd think it would stick the best and you wouldn't really interfere with the image on the fabric. Also seems like it would the most durable option. Just like fiberglassing the interior, only you're using old under-roos instead of FG fabric.

Yea that would be legit. But it would be hard to make it come out super smooth without sanding. unless you make yourself some kind of mold or something

Who said anything about not sanding? Everything gets smoother after proper sanding. I figured that was a given, especially if he's still planning to clear coat it.

Well, for the simple fact that you cant sand down fabric. More or less, i'm putting that ceramic coat on it, as they do plates and bowls.

I think if you sand too much it will not be as clear. Plus thats alot of work to do.

My toughts on doing this to the center console is the option to take the fabric/paper off and put a new design on. If you use resin I would hope you really liked the design.

ThatGuy
11-12-2007, 04:56 PM
You know the best way to get rid of sanding scratches?

Keep sanding!

I said proper sanding. Roughing up the resin with 80 grit is not not proper sanding. If you want it to look REALLY good, you have to put in more work. Expecting to just glue fabric to an interior piece and get a professional finish is naive. What I am discussing with the Thread Starter is, hopefully, a more professional looking product.

Anybody with fiberglass/bodywork/paint experience, please step in to correct me if my ideas aren't going to work.

^Im completely agree with you man, I'm just sayin, fabric on the center console, plastic? Right? So are sayin to apply fabric then sand, or vice versa. I can see if i was going to hand draw it on there after sanding then resin etc.

Either or, its a good idea, i just dont think being that its so small, sanding doesnt need to be applied, well that and i dont know how to sand lol all that great and its small.

But im not disagreeing with you.

ThatGuy
11-12-2007, 05:30 PM
Understood.

I'm saying resin the fabric onto the plastic.
Allow it to dry.
Sand down any high spots in the resin.
If clearcoating, apply it now.
With or without clearcoat, finish it up with fine sanding to give it a glossy/smooth/clean look.

Again, someone with more experience with resin and bodywork can explain it better.

If you want it to look good, take the time and do the work.

If you want it done quick and easy, don't expect pro results.

It's the same in all things automotive.

That's all I'm saying.

Yea Obviously Im saying profit wise and making money and being able to sell them and make a decent amount of money off them might not be worth it. Especially if he cant do the whole resin process himself

I think applying resin to the fabric, sanding, and clearing is a great idea. There'd really be no point in using the fabric in the first place except for it being easier to apply the resin to though.

that's basically what people do when they make those goofy audio enclosures in cars. build a frame, stretch felt over it, apply resin, bondo and paint. but they use bondo because it's easier to sand down to a smooth surface. resin is pretty hard, it might take a little while to get a good finish on it.

Its harder with the fiber glass you do multipul layers then sand the resin off to the fiberglass tell it starts to peel. Sound quality thing. the resin would completly screw up the image on the fabric because its dye it would bleed when you put the top layer on the way he is doing it now is the most logical I see without spending hours making 1 and selling them for a very expensive price making it not worth it...

Yep, bondo. I did my glove box a few years ago. Took off the fabric, bondo, sand down til smooth, paint black, wet sand, clean coat.

It looks just like the center console now. Goes great with my black Q-Ball shift knob.

But in this case you'd need something clear so you could see the fabric through it. Resin is clear...right?

Yeah resin would work if the fabric was 1 color. Resin isnt just some sticky clear stuff it is a compound in other words it makes 2 into 1 then hardens. The colors would start bleeding all over the picture making it look like crap. And it would be so time consuming unless people wanna pay gucci prices for scooby doo this wont happen. Need somthing other then resin to make it happen mabey the stuff they use to make new skating rings it comes in clear but is probably expensive:-/

How about a liquid acrylic? It shouldn't make the color bleed and it could be sanded and buffed to a crystal clear finish. You could even dye the acrylic.
