View Full Version : Custom center console how to!:tokidoki

Hi,
Lots of questions and compliments (THANKS!!!) on how I did my custom Tokidoki panel.
Still working out kinks here and there, any advise or feedback on what you discover is more than welcome! So here ya go!

Tools needed:
Printer
Thick paper (preferably glossy)
Modpage (go to your art store)
Exacto knife
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki006copy.jpg

Prep
Remove center console, clean off with clean wipes, remove the four screws on the back of the shift boot.

1. Find a LARGE image of your liking
180dpi being the smallest 300dpi working the best ( you want a big image so that there is no pixelation and the image will fit on your console) Crop, enlarge your image in photoshop (or equivalent)to you're liking.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/cutpaste.jpg
2. Print your image out on a color printer, for my first one I used post-it photo sticky paper, I found you can even use regular gloss paper that is stock at kinko's. (this is the hardest part) Do some test prints and enlarge/ crop to you're liking. Crop you're image into two parts on a horizontal plain
I payed per min. at Kinko's 'design station' and printed everything from photoshop and set my own paper i the trays*helps if you have the hook-up there.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki002copy.jpg
3. Once your image is printed out on the 2 sheets, use your MODPAGE to paste up the back of the images completely. Go ahead and just smear it on there, if it gets on the front of the paper, don't worry, just wipe it off, it should not smear the image. That's the beauty of modpage.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki003copy.jpg
*extra info
Yeah,
At first I used Post-it sticky back photo paper, but that did not work quite right, too stiff. I actually screwed up on the print and printed it on the back paper that you peel off! (that's why it says post-it,heh) So I used this and shmeared on some modpage with my finger and covered all of it, don't worry it doesn't bleed the color. Then adhere to said plastic console just like you would a sticker!
You can pretty much use any paper you can print on; but the higher quality i.e. gloss, paper weight, the better. You could probably use the color gloss paper kinko's has. You don't neccesarily have to go to kniko's. If you have a printer at home you can use that as well.

So any good glossy paper you can print on will be sufficient.

And yes just put it on like a sticker (cause you're making the sticker)glue on picture paper, bam!Sticker!

4. Now, adhere the 2 pieces to the console, line-up the images to match, just like a giant sticker.

5. the left side of the console will be a bit tricky, you can just cut it off before it rounds off or you can cut the folding points and then put another image on top to cover it.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki024copy.jpg
6.Let set to dry, when the image is dry use a stencil blade or an axacto knife to trace where the radio, and other holes go. Just trace 'em out with the blade.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki004copy.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/worangejuice/tokidoki/tokidoki009copy.jpg
you can see the sticky paper messed up on one side, So I just used the post-it back, HA, I liked how it looked.
7.Pop console back in and let all admire!

yes it should fade real bad due to the sun beating on the ink.

I've talk to one of the so called "experts" on paper at the office depot...and
now it could be bullshit but he was saying how in his experience..epson ink has been the most tolerant to sunlight beating than other ink.

SO Bottom line: time+sun= fade..I'm a little worried on the glue part..so..right now I'm testing the taped paper idea.
hehe sorry I beat ya to it, you snooze you lose buuuuddy:fruit:

or, you could just spray a thin layer of clear wheel paint with a uv protection on it, and be done.

OR.....

There are certain brands of trim/dash dressing (higher end brands..not like mothers or pep-boys brands) that have a great uv protection level.

Thats kind of what I wanted to say, but didn't... I don't care what people think usually, but I'd hate for my best friends to see something like that in my own car and think me as you know...

yeah, but if i didnt listen to every negative comment - i wouldnt be where i am today either, mike!

i mean, you often have to look past whether or not it sounds negative or positive - and look further than that to determine whether or not the comment is valid.

personally, there's a ton of things that i see nowadays being done to 240's that i think is janky and cheap. but, thats just my opinion. when one expresses his or her opinion, its nothing more than that - a view.

-----------

i always try to treat a car like i would any other car of high value, whether its a 350z, corvette, porsche, ferrari, or collector car. I tell myself "does this pokemon interior look good in a mclaren f1?" NO. if i had a mclaren f1, would i do it? no.

its a personal touch, yes. and a person likes it, i guess thats all that matters. but being the rough person that i am, if i think it looks cheap like 60's wallpaper - i say it. and when i *attempted* to make a custom leather interior for my 240 and my friend called it "a home-made batman costume" i was upset, but he was right.

good thing i didnt try to keep that interior..

I'm not sure about the choice of design but that's a very cool idea! It's certainly a good way to spice up the ugly and boring S13 dash layout. But I agree with whoever suggested material instead of paper. As I type this I'm wearing a simple camo tee that I bought at a surplus store for $5. The material is half cotton, half polyester, so it would absorb water, and thus, resin.

It really would be simple to smear resin on the center console panel, then stretch the material over that, pushing out any bubbles and stretching it around the corners and curves. The finish would come out way better than paper ever could, and I have a serious hard on for camo shit so I think it'd be badass. Matching reupholstered door cards in the same material would be cool too. And all this could be done for maybe $10-15 in material and a few bucks in resin. Cheap and cool. Win!

Hell, taking it one step further you could even reupholster the center panels on your seats in matching BDU material. Now that's a custom interior I could live with!
