I just finnished making a siginal converter for the speedo and wired everything in my car last night. Everything works good, i even made the speedo read in mph not kph.
If there is any interest i can make a writeup with schematics on how to do it.

schematic would be cool, pictures of how you made it not fit like ass would be better.

Everyone knows its not a direct drop in, you have to cut your dash and bezel and mold everything back in.
I just havnt gotten to that part yet

Whats the advantage to using s15 cluster? Or do you like the look better is that why you did it?

I think thats pretty cool. Its very unique. Im not trying to sound like a smartass either. but looking at the schematics.....no thank you. lol

Awesome writeup! Wish I could do the same.
I HAD an S15 cluster, till some dirtbag in SOCAL stole my shit.

that secmatic is super simple. look at the pic of the board. anyone with a couple of years in electronics experience could make this up for you in under 30 min tops with all the parts. and i bet most of those pars are easy to some by... am i wrong OP?

Thats fucking badass, that might be an option for my track car where dash fit and finish won't be as big a deal as a street car....

yes it does read MPH even though the meter says KPH
so 20kph = 20mph and 100kph = 100mph and so on
speed sensor = 4.5hz/mph sine wave
s15 cluster input = 12.5hz/number on meter 0-5v square wave
s13 ecu speed input = 0.5hz/mph 0-5v square wave
designing the converter took about 3 days in my offtime at work but building it too maybe 1 hour. my hands are kinda shakey.
the parts are all basic stuff except for the lm2917 and the lm231. i had to order those.
very cool can't wait to see it installed in the dash.

ok just got the temp gauge working correctly. a 200ohm resistor needs to be added somewhere between the gauge and the sensor. i put mine about an inch down the wire from the guage.

besides the signal converter you made could you list what wires connect to which??? for s14, s13 etc and more pics please. Great thread I just wouls like to know how to wire it into my s14
xsparc
11-11-2007, 03:06 PM
see thats where the tricky part comes in
s13/14 get the speed signal to the cluster from the speed sensor (2 wires). white s15 get it from the ABS computer (1 wire)
so from a s13/14, find the 2 wires from the speed sensor (Y/B and Y/R), ground 1 and connect the other to the converter. then take the output from the converter and hook it to the s15 cluster (pin 15 LG).

if you did a write up, that would be AWESOME. I love the s15 cluster.

can you specify tolerances for your components? i might jsut make a pcba

yea make it more compact and maybe a small hammond enclosure for it. copper clad board + PnP blue (or gloss photo paper) + etchant

this is an awesome thread I'm not really a schematics type a guy don't really understand it much I didn't pay attention in my electrical engineering class. I really wanna do this swap is there any another way that this can be simplified more thanx.....

OP +rep points that for sure. Very nice, and converting the speedometer to read in MPH so now we can actually know how fast we go past the speed limited nice. Now I just need my friend to build me a board so I can buy a s15 cluster
pbcstylez
11-12-2007, 10:41 AM
id be willing to make boards for a small fee that is if the OP gives me consent on his design and additional info that i need to make the PCBA.

11-12-2007, 10:45 AM
i am giving this info up for free. with that said, its not my fault if you mess something up. if someone wants to make this on a pcb with smcs then go for it, im not gonna ask for any money or anything. i do this kinda stuff for a living and i like doing, it was fun for me. ;)
oh im writing up a full DIY with all the info i can cram in so gimme a few hours and itll be up.

wow thats a great write up plus 1 rep for you. in all seriousness i would pay you to do that for my s14(97) seriously i have wanted to do the s15 cluster for 2 years now.. pm me if you are intrested. cash in bank.:aw:

My intention was to stay thru hole like you had, just maybe make a smaller sized pcba with traces and manually solder these things. should take 2 weeks max, depending on the leadtime of the ICs
xsparc
11-12-2007, 04:02 PM
oh i could have made it alot smaller, im not even using half that pcba.
the lead time is really short, i think i got all of the parts in 3-4 days

I would definitely pay for a board like that. Do all the warning lights work?

yep, except the batt light, it did work and now it doesnt, not sure why yet.

that's pretty cool. i'm going to just replace everything with autometer, but i dig the creativity.
