Yeah I was planning on doing the 17th DD but I couldn't make it as well

Gymkhana was a different situation, mainly because a gymkhana course took longer to run through, and there were a lot more drivers

But like any other race event / drift day, by signing up you gotta suck it up and deal with whatever happens that day, I can't guarantee how much driving time, etc you will get

This event should be the same as any other Drift Association day, in regards to run time/setup/layout

If anything, with that autocross setup, it might pull some drivers off the drift course, which might equate to more drift time

is it 50 peeps total or 50 drift & 50 grip? either way i'll join on friday!

No, 50 drivers TOTAL

I'm not sure how big the autocross course will be at the moment, so those who are going for pure autocross might want to wait until the layout is posted

Should be like $5 or $10 bucks

If you are driving you dont pay that fee obviously

*** UPDATE!!! ***

We are changing things up and adding something new! We will still have our drift section, but for all of you "non-drifters" we will have an "Industry Day's Free For All" course. (Similar to an autox course). To register for this its $75. We are limiting it to 28 drivers. Keep in mind that a usual autox will cost around $60-75 and you will have to work the course. You will not have to work the course. Not only that you usually only get around 12-16 runs. This event you should get 20+ runs. Bring extra tires. We will still have a section for drifting which costs $115 (limited to 40 entries). If you pay $115 you will have access to both of the sections. At the end of the day we will have a little competition. (Great prizes to be announced! ) Sign up ASAP!

(BTW... i like the title of this thread. :))

I dont want "or"

i want a definitive price.

this is bullshit :bs:

also

you all drive me up the fucking creek when you call it an AF base.

It was never an army base, nor army air corps base, nor Air Force base EVER

it was however NAVY way way way back when tustin was used to house Air Ships and then Marines, known as El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

NOT Air FORCE

it has always been marines, never AF

Cool, sounds like the autox will be fun.

A few follow up questions -

1) What is the approx length of the course - i.e. either in terms of miles or expected lap times (40 seconds, 60 seconds, etc)

2) Is timing going to be done/calculated/displayed real-time, i.e. you know how fast you went immediately after you run? Or will it be not available or you have to ask someone for your time?

Gymkhana and Industry Drift Day are hosted by two different organizations.

The only thing they have in common (besides Drift Association) is the fact that its held at El Toro.

Yes, if you are driving then you are required to have a helmet

- "Helmet is SNELL certified M95 or SA95 or newer and free of damage"

In regards to ride alongs:

- "Passenger ride-along permission is at our discretion; it is not guaranteed"

More of the exact rules can be found here:

LOLLLLL! Logan you should work for Drift Association. :keke:

To answer your question, THERE WILL BE NO SPECTATOR FEE!!!!!!

To answer your other question, I have no idea how long the course is going to be. We (the industry day staff) just decided on this last night. A course still has to be worked out. So far the only information I have is on the drift courses. there will be a slower second gear course and a faster 2/3rd gear course and a skid pad. (the courses will be typical to what you see at a regular drift day for those of you who have been to one.) I will get back to you when we figure out what kind of track we're going to have for the free for all. It's most likely going to be big enough to autox at a higher speed and you will be able to drift it if you like...

i know from the 5 south, exit sand canyon, make a left and a quick right (not sure about directions from the 5 north, as i dont know how the off ramps curve, etc). you'll hit a 'guard tower' and they'll instruct you from there...as for food, normally people just leave the premisis and p/u food.

I knew this whole "working for a large automotive aftermarket company" thing would come in handy some day.
Now that I'm 5-lug, I've got a ton of leftover Plymouth musclecar wheels and tires that need to be used up in my garage.
I'm there, just picked up a new helmet last night, so I don't get hassled for the SA2000 sticker that fell off my Sparco.

Oh, can we bring a seperate car for the grip portion?

Yes, just send paypal and put "referred by A Spec"

Typically this is only open to those in the industry, but that's why I posted it

Yuri as far as bringing two cars, I think that's possible, but you'd probably have to pay for both the "drift" course ($115) + the "grip" course ($60-75)

Then again I'm not 110%, hopefully Kat will chime in

Actually, I was just reading the web site about that:

"-Drivers register and pay, not cars. Any driver may drive more than one vehicle during a practice event, as long as that driver is registered and the vehicle has passed tech inspection."

I'm still waiting on more details about the autox course, how timing will be done, etc before I send my money.

I'm most concerned about how timing will be done. Do you have the proper equipment to do this (i.e. timing lights, large display @ end so you can see what time you got), or is this done via some other method?

Yes, BUT:

- Register first at least @ IDD site, or email the name, car, and skill level to the IDD email

- Also you need to specify if you want DRIFT/AUTOX or AUTOX ONLY

- Also included who referred you (in this case, Logan @ A Spec)

I still have tires left over from ASB II (and 1....sad) cause I drive like a punani

Any idea on how timing will be done (if at all)? Big timing display like SCCA or laptop/ask me like gymkhana?

According to the organizers, this event is supposed to be a for fun event

With that being said, due to the lower number of people running, unfortunately they cannot justify spending $500+ on timing lights, boards, etc

Most likely it will be a grassroots style, with stopwatches, write outs, etc

With that being said, if you want super accurate timing for course runs, you might want to stick with normal SCCA events, who have the equipment readily available

Typically IDD events are meant for networking and enjoyment purposes, to bring together those in the industry and their friends

But I know a lot of you take your driving serious, and while the goal isn't to downplay this, the goal of IDD is to have a fun day, rather than a serious day (if that makes sense)

wat happens if u register and pay for the event and u dont pass the tech ?

You should review the rules, I believe there is a list of things that are factored in for tech

Review those tech rules and double check your equipment before going to the event

If you don't pass tech, typically it's something small you can fix easy (like battery tie down, battery terminal not covered, etc)

If you don't pass tech and its something big, then its usually something you should fix for your own safety (like wheel bearing)

You will not get a refund if you don't pass tech, not because they are mean, but because they are not letting you run for your own safety (and other's safety)

Super fun event.
I completly filled my car with tires and they still weren't enough.
The big course was awesome, top of third is so cool.
Too bad the surface of El Toro completly ate through a set of my ST115's in under 6 minutes.:-/
I was out of tires by two, but I also drifted my roomates BMW 8-series, which was fun and surreal at the same time.

The autocrossing was a blast, I've never done it before, and still pulled off better times than almost every BMW M-car there.

I might start autocrossing. :)

Yeah man I wanted pics on the big course

But due to the layout, I dont think they would allow camera people in the spots that would make for good shots

Even with mega dick lens I think it wouldn't come out right

I wanted someone to stand at the apex of the big sweeper and take shots

LOL @ Yuri in the BMW

That thing was SWANGIN, OEM suspension style

Looked fun borderline scary

The wheels you designed looked good in person

My friend Allen came late but took some hard park shots of me and Jay to test out a new camera

Those were your guys cars?
My roomate and I thought they were rad!
did you paint the emos, or are they normally that sweet color?

The BMW was a lot of fun.
Once it hit the bumpstops it was game on.

We even attempted the big course with it.

paraphrased:
Naoki: "Wtf? You can't take this car on the course. Is it even teched?"
Me: points to tech sticker.
Naoki: "Well ok, I guess, but you can't take a passenger."
My roomate: "Um why?"
Course workers: "Why not, we've been letting him take passengers so far. He's advanced, why not"
Naoki:"Well, I guess so, since you're advanced certified, even though it took you 9 tries to get it."
Me: "8!"

wow, that car was hard to freaking transition and keep from spinning on the big course.

Haha yeah, I should've said hi too, but it wouldve been awkward dude conversation haha

But yeah the BMW looked wicked scary when you were trying to break it loose

The course worker was like nah he's cool (when you pulled up in that thang)

But yeah the surface is kinda unforgiving at high speed

4th gear down first side then big sweeper to 3rd gear down the second side

I used up a pair of fresh Federals to the cords in 4 runs :(

wow, I wish I had the power to drift in 4th. I was having trouble keeping it in 3rd. I'd get to about most the way down the front side, and then have to downshift to 2nd to build up revs so I could get back to third for the sweeper.
First time I've actually had tires blow out in the middle of a run.

Yeah we were starting behind the grid, near the cones that blocked off the section to build more speed

I could stay in 4th until the big sweeper, where I'd downshift to 3rd

Then just mash it and waste tires into the air haha
