Came back from another great Speed Ventures event...
http://www.speedventures.com/
I improved on my time by 4 seconds!...
2:14.1
2:22.6 – April 2007
2:18.7 – September 2007
Significant changes were the racing bucket seat and stiffer damping…
Track conditions were perfect and the car ran flawless with exception of the throttle cable coming loose on my first timed lap… I fixed it in 5 minutes and the car was back on the track…
I ran in the Blue group which was the intermediate group… Here are how the run groups are situated… When you sign up, you choose which one you want to run in…
Yellow – Beginners – No passing
White - Intermediate 1 – Passing on straights with a point by (the person puts his hand up to let you go by)
Blue – Intermediate 2 – Passing on straights or turns with a point by
Black – Advanced 1 – Passing anywhere
Red – Advanced 2 – Race-like conditions but no dive bombing, stealing corners, intimidating other drivers
In my group was a mix of cars including S2000s, WRXs, 997 turbos, a 997 GT3, M3s, a Porsche Boxster, Audis, Lotus Elises, Miatas, and a Ford GT… The other run groups had more amazing cars including Tein’s S15, more Porsches, a Time Attack Supra, 1800 lb. turbo Miata, a 69 Camaro, and plenty more…
Going into the event the car was ready… I had been working on the car for a couple of weeks before and even drove the car to work and school for 2 weeks just to make sure everything was OK…
My mod list at this time:
1. Rebuilt stock S14 KA24DE
2. 80mm downpipe and 80mm Buddy Club Spec 2 exhaust
3. 17x9 +20 5Zigen FN01R-C wheels
4. Bridgestone RE01-R 245-40-17 tires
5. Energy Suspension Master Bushing Kit and SPL solid subframe bushings
6. KTS coilovers
7. Hawk Blue brake pads
8. VLSD
Basically a stock S13 with wheels/tires/suspension…
Impression of the car -
The car is pretty quick… It’s more impressive when you start thinking of how little this car has as far as mods go…
At the limit the car will oversteer and I’m learning how to slide the rear on certain turns… The car feels (and is) really light so the engine and brakes work better than you would expect… Braking never fades and the car brakes just as well as any other car there… The engine is underpowered on the straight sections but perfect everywhere else… The car is stable on the high speed sections and the tires never get tired… The power feels pretty uniform across the board and I spent most of the day in the last 1000 of the powerband… Stiffening up the damping helped a lot also…
Impression of the driver
This was my 3rd time on the track but my last two events, the car had some problems and I had to put the car back on the trailer early…
I’m still hunting for the best lines but I’ve got most of the course memorized pretty well… Majority of the course I am at full throttle with the exception of two high speed areas where I back off the throttle where I shouldn’t… “Stop being a bitch” is what I(and Sal) need to do in those sections… I know I’m not trusting the brakes enough also… The car is also very easy to drive and predictable…
Tim, who competes in Time Attack with an S2000, went for a ride with me and said that I’m not bad as a driver and that I just need some more seat time to really extract the most out of the car… He drove the S13 around the track for a couple of laps and on his second timed lap he hit 2:11… 3 seconds faster than my time!… He says that the car should be able to do 2:09 with the setup as is…
So, I’m not going to make any major changes and going to try and hit 2:10 as is…
Mods I am considering though are getting a 4.6 final drive, HLSD, and a Voltex wing…
Here are some pics and times from the day…
UHaul trailers are the best... Only $55 for a day...
http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%201107/IMG_3898.JPG
And here is the most significant change in the car... Sparco Sprint, Sparco sliders, Wedge Engineering bracket, and a Nardi deep corn steering wheel...
http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%201107/IMG_3905.JPG
The driver meeting in the morning at 8AM...
http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%201107/IMG_3920.JPG
Plenty of prey... Lots of Porsches were there...
http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%201107/IMG_3963.JPG
Tein S15 was there... Not sure what time they ran... The owner of MCR was with them...

Sweet car, a good bucket seat can make a great difference when driving a car and you can do so much more when you're not using your elbow and knee to keep yourself out of your door panel.
Thanks for the post.

Nice!
A few question?
What rotor are you running? Blanks or what?
Are you on stock suspension arms??
What alignment setting are you running?
Have you thought about a one-piece driveshaft?
Just being curious. I can't wait to get on track.

What rotor are you running? Blanks or what?
S13 blanks from Autozone... All 4 for $90 with a warranty... When they wear out, they will replace them!...
Are you on stock suspension arms??
Yup... Stock arms with Energy Suspension bushings...
http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Suspension%20Rebuild/2IMG_5166.JPG
Have you thought about a one-piece driveshaft?
I'm considering a 350Z 6 speed trans and would get one at the same time... But tell you the truth a little more power isn't going to help me that much so I'm going to wait until my "race" motor setup is ready to be dropped in...
how much was
it for a run around the track?
$190 for the day... Each track costs a different amount but generally track days cost between $100-$250...
http://www.speedventures.com/
What alignment setting are you running?
-2.5 camber - front and rear
0 toe - front
1/8" toe in - rear
stock caster
32 lb. cold tire pressure
ride height measured against 4 points on the chassis to the ground

Yes he did... He improved on his time a little... He's at 2:05 now... He was 2:06 before...
Anything you did differently this time around?
Just a racing seat and a steering wheel... I stiffened up the damping to 10 front and 8 rear (from full soft)...
Can you give an honest review of this vs. WSIR?
Nope, I went to Streets with my old S13 too long ago and I've never been on Big Willow or Horsethief...
But I'll be at Streets in December and I'll give my 2 cents then...

yeah that porsche is like the weakest porsche out there..
Uhh, that's a Porsche 997 GT3... It's got 415HP from a non turbo motor...
Maybe I was a better driver than that guy but that car is a hell of a lot faster than my 240SX...
Here is my recap on the video...
Porsche chasing me out of the esses...
Passes me on the main straight... He's got triple the power I have...
Going into turn 1 (left) I am on him because of better braking and better line...
Turn 2 is a hard right going into a short straight... He does a decent job here and powers out well... The power advantage here...
Going into Cotton corners (3 turns) I catch up...
Then outo of Club Corner and going into the fast section I catch up... The Porsche was scared and backed off the throttle...
Then we hit traffic...
Next time I'm going to go into the next faster group and let's see if I can hang with those Porsches... Actually those Porsche drivers!...

What's this race motor setup you speak of?
Thanks for asking... I'm planning on putting together an NA KA as my next motor... After that a turbo motor...
The NA KA "race motor" will have:
High compression pistons (probably SOHC KA)
AMS counterweighted crankshaft
BC V3 cams and valvetrain
Xcessive intake manifold
Exedy twin disk clutch
HKS F-Con V Pro standalone ECU
350Z 6 speed trans (which effectively changes the final drive to a 4.6)
HLSD
200WHP at 8.5K is the goal...
For street class in time attack I'm limited on the mods I can do but the motor is unlimited...
I'd like to buy KW 2 way coilovers but rules state I can't use coilovers with external reservoirs...
I've got the best street tires already...
I'm going to do some aero development... wing, splitter, diffuser, canards...
Brakes will probably be Brembos all around...
And then the motor ofcourse...
But I want to do the motor last...
I'd like to prove what I can do with a stock 150HP motor...

Daryl said someone drove your car and hit 2:11s? That's pretty badass.. I'm sure you'll consistantly see under 2:10's soon enough...
Tim (aka StinkyTofu) drove with me for one of the sessions... I drove a couple of laps and then he drove for the remainder of the session...
On his 2nd lap he ran a 2:11 with my car... 3 seconds faster than my time!...
His exact words were "Nit... car's fast!"... He said that I'm a pretty good driver but that I hesitate in some of the faster sections and that I don't trust my brakes enough... Daryl told me that I use my throttle like an on/off switch and that I should smoothen that out... Especially once I have more power... Everyone that rode in the car said that it felt light and that the car had a ton of grip...
Tim thinks that the car can do a 2:09 as is... He said I just need a little more seat time...
For those who don't know Tim and his driving, he personally drives an S2000 and competes with a couple of different car including A&J Racing's Fit, SportCarMotion's Integra, Kel's S2000, and his own S2000...
His personal best is 1:59 with a relatively stock S2000 on R comps...
You can see more of his(and Rob's) driving here:
http://www.maxrev.net/
http://www.youtube.com/user/StinkyT0fu
Him and Rob are running times as fast as the pros and won three classes at Time Attack this last wednesday...
Just to give you an idea, Tanner Faust drove E-Autosports S2000(on R comps) and was able to hit a 1:59... Tim hit 1:59 with street tires and Rob hit 1:54 with A&J Racing's S2000...
How do you know kelvin?
We both know Evasive Motorsports and Daryl, S2ki.com, and we've been to the track a couple times now...
He's fast and has hit 2:00 on R comps... He uses a lot of data in his analysis and only buys the best parts (like Moton ClubSports coilovers)...
Here is a pic of me chasing a 997 GT3... I reached around to take the pic while giving full throttle out of Lost Hill... The speedometer says I was going 50MPH... They sound so great!...

That's what I was thinking to myself. I thought -2 would be the max ever on the rears.
But then again he is on stock arms. I wished I can get my alignment straight on my stock arms...

-2.5* camber in back? Seems like a lot, but your times don't lie. How'd you decide to run so much?
The stock arms don't have that much adjustment and the guy told me that it wouldn't go down to -2.0* in the back... I told him just to leave it at -2.5* so I could feel the difference...
http://www.buttonwillowraceway.com/images/race_13_config.gif
The rear of the car feels looser than I would like but I'd like to learn how to drive with it... On the faster sections, it gets a little scary but I know the car can get past it with a good line... I go into Lost Hill (Magic Mountain) in 4th gear at about 90MPH where I have to brake to about 45, correct the direction of the car to the right, clip the cone at the apex, and then power out to the right again...
I messed up once and was going real fast when I tried to trail brake up into Lost Hill and the car oversteered hard... The rear had come out and the car was sliding uphill sideways which was scary(remember this is at 50MPH!)... I corrected it as much as I could but the car went off course (and I let it)...
I'm going to re-align the car after the next two events... And after some input from others (and you guys ofcourse)... I'm going to start getting tire temps and make my decisions from there...

Hey, how long is the straight at buttonwillow and what speed did you reach?
http://www.buttonwillowraceway.com/trackfacts.htm
The website says that the main straight is 3800 ft. which comes out to .7 mile but that seems like too much... I enter the main straight in 3rd gear and end up in 4th gear by the end... I'd guess 100-110MPH...

That's a 997 Turbo. Simon's black 997 GT3 has no plates and he stayed in Black/Red Group the whole day. The yellow 997 in the session I rode with you was a 997 GT3.
E-Autosports' S2000 ran 2:00 flat but the car should be good for at least 1:57. Kel's personal best time at Buttonwillow is 2:01 on Motons but the dampers needed lots of tuning at the time. They're dialed in for street tires now which allowed Tim to hit 2:00 flat. He didn't get much track time but the car will definitely dip into sub 2's on street tires and most likely Kel will be in the 1:56's on r-comps!!
As far as alignment, most track S2000 enthusiasts are running more negative rear camber. I tried to get -3.25 in the fronts but I'm maxed out at -3.00 and the rear camber is at -3.40. I only know less than a handful running more negative front camber but regardless all are at least -3.00 camber.
Here's a clip of my last session of the day. Damn Porsche drivers have no courtesy letting other cars by :hammer:

Have you though about a doing another brake upgrade before dropping in your new engine? 300Z calipers and brake master cylinder? SS lines with better brake oil? Better rotors? Or you dont think its worth it at this time?
WOW " Red – Advanced 2 – Race-like conditions but no dive bombing, stealing corners, intimidating other drivers"
That is just dumb in all sense. No late braking, no taking the inside line, no mind games. :(

Man the car is loud as stated before. Cool you knocked off the time with just seat and supension settings.
I'd like to buy KW 2 way coilovers but rules state I can't use coilovers with external reservoirs...
a member on here recently bought the V3 and they did not have external reservoirs. some of the sti did not get the external reservoir either. so if you really want them, you may be able to find some without the reservoir.

Interesting, most 240s I've seen run quite a bit more in front due to having front Mac struts and rear multilink. The idea is that front camber gain under compression is minimal, if present at all, due to worse camber curves with the Mac strut, as compared to the multilink rear. S2ks have double wishbone all around, correct? I'm surprised so much static camber is warranted, even for R comps.

Yes, S2000s are double-wishbone front and rear.
Has any of the Silvia community ran RCA's (Roll-Center Adjusters). I had some RCA's pushed into the rear lower arms they did not work out well for me. The front RCA's were not release at the time, but I drove Maxrev's car with front/rear sets installed and it felt great!

The ones they sell on ebay seem to not be actual roll center adjusters. You can get adjustable lower control arms, and I know there are people out there with them, but I've not really read any feedback from people actually tracking their cars with hard data. Just some drifters. What did not work out well for you with the rear S2k ones?

To make a long story short, I thought one of my KW V3 dampers were blown so I sent them back for warranty while I replaced the car with BuddyClub RS coilovers with SWIFT springs and I had hell with them. The preloading on the springs were all wrong and the car felt like I was driving in the rain - rear wheels would lift off the ground during cornering, rear end coming at corner entry, and I'd get stuck going up driveways. Even after the preload was corrected, it didn't feel anything like Maxrev's AP2. I pretty much wasted a lot of track time with a bad setup. Nit's first event at Buttonwillow was really the first time I tracked the car without any issues, other than OEM suspension which I was driving better on.

could u tell me where i could find rear gear sets at?
There are a couple of gear sets that you can buy from Nissan themselves...

But I'm going to get the front diff off a 2001 Xtrerra for much cheaper... 4.6 final drive should help me out quite a bit...

I want to understand this further...
So, how much additional negative camber is there under compression and how much is the difference between the front and rear?...
What should I understand about this change in camber?...
There are actually many questions I have about suspension tuning but maybe I'll just make another thread...
I was talking to Daryl about getting a tire temp gauge and starting to collect data to further tune the suspension... Tire temps, pressure, lap times, and anything else you guys can recommend... I'd like to make a spreadsheet and buy the measuring instruments before these events so I can report back to everyone...
I'm also bugging a friend to come along on those days to help out with data and photography... We'll see how many tacos it takes...

nitin you need to learn what your camber curves are on your car under compression and rebound. and see if people want to group buy for the racepak data acquisition. I know data logging is definitely the way to a faster lap time and improved driving ability

The basic idea is that Mac struts suck, and after we lower our cars, the curve starts to get kind of ugly and you lose camber under compression. Hence, you run more static camber so that when you're midcorner and the suspension is fully loaded, you have a decent contact patch still. The rear multilink setup isn't so ugly under compression, so less static camber is needed there. In general, more static camber is recommended for mac strut suspensions than for multilink or A arm suspensions. Check out J Rho's old STS S13 setup- I think he ran -4.5* camber in front, and something that was much less in back. At rest it looked crazy but just eyeballing a good shot of his car cornering, it seemed like the tire was pretty square with the road.
I ran about -2.8* front and -1.8* rear at my last track day and according to my $8 Harbor Freight infrared thermometer (lol), the tire temps were pretty consistent across the rear tires, and the fronts were about 10*F hotter inside. I made 3 measurements each at the outside tread, middle, and inside tread, but they ended up being so close in each area that this was really only necessary for peace of mind. Of course, by the time you do a slow lap and roll through the pits, tires have started to cool quite a bit, so this data isn't as good as it could be. But, I think it's a start. I'll play with this more once I get a better suspension on my car, hopefully next summer will allow the time and funds for that before some other stuff going on in my life pretty much shuts down my tinkering for ~2 years.

im actually interested in your camera set up
$7 from Ace Hardware...
2 brackets
5 bolts (1/4 coarse I believe)
4 nuts
3 rubber insulators (2 between the chassis and the bracket and one for the camera)
The brackets are very tough and don't flex at all in the car...
I drilled two small holes where the headliner would have been...
The camera I was using was a Canon Elph SD1000 but I returned it...
I'm considering buying a Canon Elph SD850is and this cheap HD digital camera/camcorder from BestBuy for $120...

I think the ka24e has as much wheel torque as a stock s2000
Nikey I think I told you on FA I would probably go to wsir streets.
in other news, I think I might go to buttonwillow for speed trials on the 16th of decemeber instead of speedventures at WSIR streets.
My car has a lot of power and I think it would be better tested on the longer straights of Buttonwillow. I close down 1/4-1/2 miles insanlely fast in my car and I know there isnt much for straights or good road conditions at WSIR streets compared to buttonwillow
so anyways convince me otherwise

Make sure your brakes are working perfectly because you've got all kinds of power...
