Are B&M short shifters worth getting?

you really should search before asking a question as simple as this, happy flaming...

Yes. I had one for the longest time.

Shorter throws, really tight and precise, gained confidence in knowing its in there, and is going to stay there.

Buy it new, or Cosmo EBay Special.

Oh yea.

V1 = vibrating problem.

V2 = Solved problem, GOLDEN.

qwikspool

yes its worth it if you like precise shifting. for me its a lot better than stock.

SochBAT

at higher RPMS, it would vibrate, but it was minute.

Nothin crazy.

The only people that complain about the noise are a buncha fruits anyways.

Get one, get happy.

PS. Lucas oil stabilizer.

That just lets you know that it is almost time to shift.

One thing no one has said is that they are "notchy"

Not necessary, but always a plus.

Tranny feels like new. Keeps em lubed nicely.

Do it.

I was looking at getting one, and had heard about the V1 causing problems- but all the people I've talked with at race shops haven't heard about V1 and V2. They said there's no difference in the product number or visually on the box.

Apparently as long as you buy one that was manufactured between 2006-now should be V2.

s13silvia03
11-04-2007, 10:57 PM
Version II was pretty much made to reduce the minor rattling at high RPM's. Version I also came with the B&M shift knob IIRC. Also, I've had my B&M on my s13 for about 1.5 years now, smooth and precise still.

You still get slight rattling, but its only at high RPMs. If you're driving on the street, I doubt you'll even rev the engine that high (normal driving not driving like a douche and redlining every gear). If you're at the track, there's so much other shit going on, I doubt you would even notice the sound.

You should be able to get it at any site (Most of the vendors on the site will probably be able get it for you)or store that sells B&M parts. You don't really have to specify Version II, I'm sure the first version is out of production so all shifters will be the Version II.

I'd imagine they're about the same quality as the eBay short shifters that come with the transmission plate. Personally, I hate Megan shit with a passion and would never put Megan racing anything on my car, don't really care how minuscule of a part it would be. Can't really say anything about Circuit Sports as I'm not too too familiar with they're stuff. I'm sure they're are others though that like 'em.

My $0.02, like I said, others may think different.

ok i hear you, so basically there just knock offs
of b&m shifters and doesnt have the quality of b&m,
but probably doesnt make the vibration b&m gives.
im still worried about that vibration, so how far up into
the rpm does it start vibrating.

B&M for 3 years strong and I love it. You won't regret buying the B&M...ever.

11-05-2007, 07:15 AM
dont bother with the megan/ebay b&m style shifters, you will have to replace the bushings on the shifter as soon as you get it for one, and they also leak from the top of the shifter where it goes through the plate (b&m gives you a boot that goes over this). Also i noticed the side-to-side movement in the knock offs is not as tight.

I've had my Ver. 1 B&M for over four years and 80K miles. Yeah it rattles a little at higher RPMs, but the throw is short and precise, just the way it should be. My friend has an Ebay version that's newer and he still likes mine a lot better.

I've had B&M shifters in both of my Pignose Hatches. Best shifter I've ever had in any car period! Tight as a virgin shifts, solid as hell. If you miss a shift with this shifter, you just suck ass at shifting. As far as the rattling, I've heard that the older ones do, but neither of mine have rattled. FWIW, I run GM Syncromesh Friction Modified tranny fluid in the gear box, smooth as silk.

I THINK i have one haha, i posted a few pics in the "identify this" and some board members were pretty sure it was a C's. it came with my front clip. and i love it. probably the same as B&M. but if you go with C's you can save a couple bucks that can go to something else.

i bought my s14 with the ebay crap style v1 short shifter, and its awful, i can't feel the shortness in the throws. its sits loosly. and sometimes i shift into 5th gear from 1st. its rattles all the time. and unscrews under hard shifting from 3rd to 2nd or vice versa, i seriously want one, if anyone want they can sell me one for 150 or under shipped i'd be cool with that :D

Just so you guys know, B & M only produces the newest version now, which eliminates the vibration at high rpms. But be wary of used or even alot of eBay sellers that are selling them for a lower price.

Most likely you're getting old ver. 1 stock, that will vibrate. The part numbers are the same. The box looks different though.

The newer ones have a short shifter for a Mustang on the front, don't know why. The older version actually has the 240 shifter on the box. You will usually see the older versions going for around 150-175. The newest versions should sell for about 200-225.

I ended up getting a ver. 1 for around $150, I am going to sell it and buy my Bro's ver. 2 from him. Mainly cause the vibration is distracting when you're concentrating on driving. But the shifting is top notch, nice and tight. Also the shifter boot has a tendancy to tear on the back end due to rubbing on the inside mount. No biggie, still doesn't leak and you can get an OEM boot for 7 bucks to replace it.

I got the version 1 in my dd s14 for over 3 yrs now. It was night and day difference from the old sloppy shifter. Recommend changing the tranny fluid when you put the new shifter in, because when i installed the b&m with that existing fluid that in there from the previous owner. It was kinda tough to engage in gear, but with new mt90, it was a lot lot better. The rather don't bother me, just remind me it's about time to shift. But when i autox, with concentrating and exhaust noise and all. I don't even notice the rattling.

Just picked up another b&m for another s14 that m putting together and i guess it is a new version since it doesn't come with a knob. It shipped directly from b&m so it must be version 2.

No, the shifter stays the same height. Short refers to the throw, not the height of the shifter.

Like 10 being stock and 1 is like you moved it a inch.

BattleRoyale
12-02-2007, 02:44 PM
the difference is between stock and the b&m shifter is like night and day, its shifts are shortened by at least 40%

my ver. II still rattles like hell, had some issues with it going into first and reverse, and with the white bushing not lining up

currently running the old sloppy oem shifter. I ordered new oem bushings to put on the B&M shifter and see it it eliminates some of my problems

if it doesn't i'm pretty sure its cuz my trans is hella old

Think about it this way.

OEM = Wiggle Dick. Wiggles like hell in gear.

B&M = Tight Anal. Stays put in gear and out of gear.

MrChow. I'd say about a 2. The throws are RETARDEDLY short compared to stock. It takes a bit to get used to, but its golden when you're adapted to it.

Fromxtor, i ALWAYS read your name as FOXTOR. Dnno why. But i had that setup for like, a week. Felt really nice, close to stock throw, but really precise. If you like the current throw length, do it. But I took it off because i liked it really short.

Go figure. An asian guy liking it short. Haha. I'm too damn comfortable with myself.
