My 240 just recently started doing this to me. it had low compression but i squirted oil in each cylinder and it brought the compression back up (it stayed up also, it was like it hadn’t been run in a long time and the rings needed to be reseated). It was thought to also have a blown head gasket because waster was leaking from somewhere but that was a crack in the hose that goes from the bottom of the intake manifold to the back of the thermostat housing. I replaced that hose then started it but as soon as it started it idled for a half a sec then died. I can keep it running by giving it gas but if i let off it will always just die. I took the plugs out and they seemed a little nasty (also I think it does have internal water leaking somewhere because there was moisture on the plugs). Could there be another reason why it’s doing this or do I need to dive into the motor to find out where the water is leaking from. I was hoping to have it driveable then find the cause of the moisture on the plugs. What do you think?

Well after cleaning the spark plugs I went to start it to see if it would stay running (it didn’t btw), but I forgot I had the radiator cap off to put more water in and when I started it I was keeping it running by revving the motor to 1500. Every time I would rev it up coolant would shoot out the radiator, does this mean blown head gasket or is that just the water pump doing its job?

Well I took the water pump out of the equation (took off the belt) and the water still shoots out, so I guess I am going to be replacing a head gasket

Update: I was reading through some posts and someone had a similar problem as me and they were told to check there distributor. I went out to check mine and taking the wires off I noticed one was too easy to get off the distributor. Well the part that clips in distributor had desentigrated:ugh: ...So i take the other wires off the distributor and 2 out of the remaining 3 did almost the same thing. I am guessing this is contributing to my car not staying running unless I give it gas. So I am going to buy a wireset next week and see if that fixes it or not

wow thats a bummer dude, it sounds like you should do a tune up first then see if there is still a problem, it does seem like a headgasket could be blown since the coolant shot out with the pump disconnected. it also could be alot of air in the cooling system and when you rev it the heat causes the bubbles to expand and that spits the water out.

thats what I am hopeing, because there was a hose that had a leak in it...I hoping the head dont have to come off
