what can cause my timing to be way off the mark?i checked the timing and it was beyond 20deg the marks werent close to the needle....i think it can be a bad knock sensor...when i try to adjust it to 15deg i have to move the cas all the way counterclockwise and when i do that the ehxaust smell like gas....

Sometimes when you use the wire at the back of the motor, if you have the pickup flipped the wrong way, you will get a wildly inaccurate timing reading. Try flipping the pickup around the wire and see if the reading goes crazy again. Whichever value is lower is the correct one (IIRC)

The only way I got an accurate reading for timing was to use an old spark plug wire. That is the best way to do it. If you don't you can get erroneous readings.
