View Full Version : New 240sx Law?
Borund

Hey guys, kind of a silly question, but i was hearing from a couple of guys that there is a new law passed, that only pertains to 240's. The law says that 240's now have to get smog checked every year, instead of every 2 years. Anyone hear about this, or know if its bogus?

lol, why would a law only pertain for a 240sx?
Totally bogus IMO.
Now if the law stated that cars older than 93 had to be smogged every year, i MIGHT believe that.

Fuck the law.
They don't care about the environment.
They just want us all to ditch our old rides and buy new vehicles so that their buddies in the car industries get rich off of us.
Or because it really is bad for the environment.

Your friend was probably somewhat correct. Of COURSE it does NOT pertain to only 240's but I believe there IS a law being passed for 2008 that vehilces of OBD1 which is mostly 95 and older? (not sure) that will need to be smogged every year instead of two years.
go here: http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset2text.htm
and search for bill: AB 616
Vehilces 15 years or older will be effected. So 1992-1975 needs to be smogged yearly, after 1975 and older those fuckers still get the smog exempt. Retarded? Yes? Political bullshit to make more money? Maybe?

the trucks are being dealt with, i work for a company with a huge fleet over 1000 trucks. by 2010 you basically have to have a 98 or newer truck or you will have to spend big bucks to modify it to meet the standards. same with big construction equipment.

you my friend are pretty much right .. been to several meetings with the docs.
so this "mod" you are talking about costs 20k!, yes $20,000.00 for rigs and other transportation vehicles to run in california, you basically have to have a 04 and newer by next year, i work for a finance co who fund rigs etc for transportation.. umm yes this is only in cali.. it starts with CARB targeting bussiness then to the public.. and ask how they get theyr analysis reports..

Thats the way it sorta is in japan
They make so many rules and taxes that it's easier to buy a new car then to register an old one and keep taking it to tests and having yearly taxes on it.
thats why you can find R32's for under $1000 and S14's for like 3000-5000 that are nicer than anything i have ever seen in the US

Which part?
I got my R32gtsT(94) for $800 on base, sold it for 600 body was clean no kit, 17'x9 advans, stock engine with boost controller.
I remember having to do the base certification(forgot what it was called)
for having the car on base, and also having to take it into town to do a ful inspection which cost about $400, plus registration, and the annual tax was about 500-600.
I was in Oki for 2 years.
had 3 cars there.
but didnt own any of them for more than a year,
I actually asked a few locals why teh cars where so cheap and they always said people prefered payig more for the newer ones cuz of the annual costs of taxes and certificates for the older cars.

Where do you get your information from?
Here found this online....I forgot the name of the tax and inspection so did a quick search!
"Sha'ken" (mentioned just above) must be paid every two years on older cars. The amount of Sha'ken goes up depending on the size, engine size and age of the vehicle. During the Sha'ken process certain repairs must be made, and it can get very expensive. On the other hand, it helps insure that your vehicle is well maintained, so you're much less likely to have it breakdown in between. However, the fact is that as cars get older, Sha'ken becomes more and more expensive. Eventually, if the car stops running well or reaches a certain age (even though it's still a good car), you may have to pay a fee just to get rid of it. This is the reason why there are so few older cars in Japan. When cars hit about 60,000 kilometers (maybe 40,000 miles), people start to get rid of them. You'll find very few cars on the road with more than 100,000 kilometers (66,000 miles). Many of these used cars are shipped to other countries, like USA, Australia and New Zealand, where people love the endless supply of cheap, slightly used cars from Japan."

that would be called "discrimination" and would result in lawsuits against the state..... id call BS on that!
some people just like to talk out of their ass.
thats krazy talk.
i dont believe they can make the genral public smog and register there cars every year.
just like how they were gona bring back state check.
they should do both so that way gov. makes hella bank
and cut out the smog guys. greedy bastards.
i bet there just going to have more on spot smogs. catch you while your driving deal.

Ok guys I am going to cry foul here. That bill that Cesar posted has not passed its still on the floor getting highly debated and being amended. It will most likely not pass in its current form this year. Its running out of time legislatively.
Now I will tell you guys something that has happened. Its the new EVAP regulation. All OBDII cars EVAP information is read automatically by the computer. On OBDI one cars though , OBDI is not sophisticated enough to feed the smog test computer your EVAP info. So as of Dec 1st any OBDI one vehicle has to be hooked up to a EVAP unit which tests your EVAP. Now if your wondering what EVAP thats your fuel return lines to the tank along withe filler neck and what not. Its a lot of plastic and rubber components prone to wearing out on old cars. If your car fails this test all the offending stuff i.e. leaking needs to be replaced. Thats going to start costing us.
Currently the only cars that needed yearly smog checks are gross polluters that have failed repeatedly and are tagged by the computer for it.

Actually the new law that was passed takes effect this November and it requires that all vehicles that are to be smogged also must pass an evap test too. They're trying to get the old cars off the road in California.

10-31-2007, 10:52 PM
some of this is true. so far there have been no laws passed requiring annual smog. the only way you'd hafta smog every year is if your car is a gross polluter. the new law requires far more involved evap testing procedures. on obd I cars basically they perform a functional *(it used to be just a visual)* test if the evaporative systems. the law trying to make smogs annual is not yet passed. hopefully it never will. or else i'm gonna hafta go get a smog license.

First, the green movement is not motivated by good, wholesome causes. The green movement is motivated by greed, by holier-than-thou attitudes, and by arrogance that we can affect what this planet is going through.
You want green? How about letting us do whatever the fuck we want to our cars with no visual as long as we pass a sniffer? But no, you can't do that because you want the revenue that the aftermarket has to pay to register parts through your bureaucratic bullshit.
I passed smog better with my timing set outside their parameters than with it in their parameters.
Whine whine sniff sniff... I still wouldn't live anywhere else, other than Japan or Colorado.

wait, who is smoking crack? can i has some? imo, carb eo #s are bs. my car when it was stock (ka dohc) smogged cleaner with an hks mushroom filter on it compared to with the stock airbox and a new air filter. and even cleaner with no air filter at all. i had access to a smog machine during smog classes and my hc's dropped noticeably with the hks filter. how is this bad? stupid that this is illegal. i'm entirely convinced that the gov't only acts in the interest of what will fill their pockets while still appearing to do some thing "good".

Its a good law to get the p.o.s. cars off of the road but a bad one for anyone who has to pay for smog. Luckily I don't have to smog my cars, but for those who do expect to pay more for future smogs due to the added evap test. The evap test equipment costs like $4k and someone's gonna pay for it.

Dont have to worry about it here in MD. We have the roller tests, meaning your car has to get on the rollers. So you drop the coilovers way down before you go, and tell them its too low, you dont want damage. They take one look, and write me a 2 year waver :)

yeah, My old '04 Volvo got taken away for a '08 Volvo w/ Cummins ISX engine with that exhaust ATS regeneration filter thing. Its pretty weak compared to the '04. I can barely pull hills anymore w/ any load over 40k. But, its good for the environment I guess. :-/
