(CNN) -- A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck Northern California Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about five miles north-northeast of Alum Rock, California, and nine miles northeast of San Jose's City Hall, the USGS said. It hit at 8:04 p.m. (11:04 p.m. ET).

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Rafael Abreu of the USGS said that a 5.6 quake was considered moderate but could provide "a pretty strong jolt."

The earthquake's epicenter was 5.7 miles below the Earth's surface. Earthquakes centered close to the surface produce stronger shaking and generally can cause more damage than those farther underground.

Alum Rock is 50 miles southeast of San Francisco.

The quake was centered in the Diablo Range foothills, not far from the home of the Mayor, Chuck Reed, The Associated Press reported.

"It was a pretty strong ride here, a lot of shaking but nothing broken," Reed told the AP in a phone interview. "I've talked to a few people, and we have no reports of injuries or damage. There was a lot of shaking, but it wasn't the big one."

Rod Foo, who resides in southern San Jose about 10 miles from the quake's center, told the news agency that the his home did not lose power or phone service.

"I could hear it coming up the street before it hit the house," Foo told the AP. "I thought it was the kids messing around at first; then I felt the house shaking and I knew it was an earthquake. ... It was rattling for a long time and really loud."

Actually, If I remember correctly from my geology class a 6.0 is ten times larger then a 5.0. So from 5.6 - 7.1 would be 15 times what you felt today to equal the one back in 1989 or somethin along those lines. Any way I hope everyone and their cars are safe.

damn i was taking a piss and i didn't know what to do haha.

do i keep peeing and potentially die, or quickly pull up my pants whilst still peeing and run for cover?

while i was deciding, the earthquake ended so lucky me.

you are correct, the richter scale is logarithmic,

ie a 6.0 is 10 times stronger than a 5.0
a 8.0 is 1000 times stronger than a 5.0 and so on..

hope everyone is okay up there and i hope socal doesnt get one....

Everyone hates earthquakes? Why? Yeah they shake and all but don't be afraid of the shakey shakey, I'd be scared of where the hell I'll BE WHEN it starts to shake. Imagine taking a huge shit when the big one hits? Imagine having sex? taking a shower!? Having DIRTY sex and being chained up to the bed!?!?! Yeah..... I hope I'm not in any of those situations.

I rode out the 89 Loma Prieta Quake in the bay area. I was working at a Engine Importer in Berkeley. I watched engines fly off shelfs 30 ft up. I watched the rode in front of the warehouse wave with 4 foot rollers and no the pavement did not crack. We were all like wow. the clocks stopped so we decided to go home.

I lived in San Franscisco at the time. I remember getting on the 80 to go the bay bridge and there was a massive traffic Jam. I turned on the radio in my 240z and half the stations were off the air. I finally got one and thats when I realized the severity of what I had just gone through. The reporter was stating how the cypress freeway structure had collapsed and a section of the bay bridge had fallen. Basically it meant I was on a freeway going nowhere. I got off at the Emeryville exit and found a phone booth. Yup cell phones were huge briefcase bricks at that time and expensive.

The phone service was intermittent. I called my mom and she suggested I call my sister who lived in Berkeley. I did and I spent the night in Berkeley without power. The next day I went to work and that night drove back into San Francisco via the Richmond San Rafael bridge and the Golden Gate. I remember driving in and the Marina had smoke rising from it and the whole downtown area was pitch black. There were lights in the Richmond/Sunset districts. It was totally eerie.

When I got back to our house in the Western Edition right outside of the Haight Ashbury our power was on and it was fine. Turns out its on bedrock and road it out fine. A trip thats all I can say. Though I am prepared for the next big one if it comes. Earthquakes do not scare me. I am a Californian we live in Earthquake country shit happens. Bring it on.

P.S. I would rather live in a Place with occasional Earthquakes than somewhere that gets pounded by Tornado's or Hurricanes almost every year or multiple times a year. lol

We rented. Though ya, I am older than I look, lol thank god. It was 18 years ago to be exact. So you can do the math and hazard a guess on my age.
Though you would never get it if you saw me in person.

Good story...Thing is in Florida we dont get randomly fucked. Even when tornados come there is mean early warnings. With Hurricanes you know that shits coming from about 2 weeks away and the general area of where its going so you know if its time to get nervous or what.

2 years ago though we were shitting pants for 6 weeks in a row as every single weekend was followed with a beautiful storm wanting to demolish us. Damage was intense. We had some mean ass 3 day weekends because of them and Sarasota never got hit but shit really close did.

natural disasters worse then hurricanes, tornados, and earthquakes.

Volcanos!
Meteors!

I think I'd rather have an earthquake that is rare to happen, let along damage property to an extreme existent than live where a hurricane is coming through and has a higher chance of destroying property over a period of time.

yeah you floridites like to know and track when you guys are gonna get raped huh? i actually prefer the randomness of small shakes like this one that dont cause any damage. and when / if a big one ever hits again i doubt it will do as much damage as northridge did.. my friends dad is a structural engineer in LA and he said the freeways and buildings could stand up to northridge or even bigger. the biggest things california has to worry about is dumbass pyro's starting fires when its deemed high risk. and even in that case, you only need to worry if your house is surrounded by brush or backing a hill or whatever. i was near the fires, but they would have to burn through like 30,000 houses and offices before it reached me. which is improbable.
