Guys,

if you want a pretty key then those nismo/gtr keys are what you want.

Luckily my s13 came with the key code in the glove compartment. :D
Although the dealer said it'd be $15, but hell, it'd be a brand new oem key perfectly cut and not based of a old/rounded one (personal preference).

All the over the counter keys are identical to OE, they just don't say 'Nissan' on them. Or you can get the flat steel key without a plastic head. Great for hiding in the wallet.

When and where did you get your key? My dealer can't do that. They told me that the key itself is no longer available.

I went to a locksmith (I swear he's the keymaster from the matrix) I also had a worn down key for my 93 and he "reconstructed" the key pattern to an exact match. He then cut it on a generic flat metal key and used that to cut my nismo key. Cost me $20 but it works like a charm!

Apparently, from the factory, 240sx's had the key code on a sticker in the glove compartment.

Or a metal plate hanging on the keychain. My 95 had one.

i wonder if it would work if you just get a key from another nissan that has the same look as the 240 one. like the 95 nissan quest(my mom has one) the key is the same exact thing as my 240 just try and get a blank of that maybe it would be easier

Does that mean they can get the OEM key blank with Nissan logo?
I know generic key blanks work. But, I like to get something orignal. ;)

I wonder the same thing too. I don't mind this at all. As long as its OEM with Nissan logo.

Did you buy the uncut key and take it somewhere to get it cut? Or did you have a key code and get them to make it?
Reason I ask is because, like I said earlier, the dealership told me it'd be $15 :-/

The Nismo keys are discontinued for our years. The ones that you usually see are 10 cut keys, and ours are 8. Or I might have that backwards. Anyway... I've yet to find one!

NO, it just means that they can cut your key without having to have an original key there. If you can't get your dealer to get off their asses try courtesy or superior nissan in cali. They might be able to give you better customer service and help.

So I opened this thread before I went off to class today thinking that I'd never really have a need for a spare key. As I'm walking back to my car after class, I go through my two front pockets in my jeans and my two pockets in my jacket...no keys. SHIT! I walk up to my car and sure enough, keys on the passenger seat. I had to take a coat hanger to pop my lock. I have since reconsidered my thought :hs:

Some dealers can look up the key number in FAST, and most of the time its printed in the glove box, give the number to an automotive locksmith.

My family has always kept at least one extra key per vehicle in the house in a universal spot. (she lives 10 minutes away from me). I always leave one at her house and one in my apartment.

Yeah, when I went to the Nissan dealer to get a key for my S14, I gave the tech my VIN# but he couldn't get a key code from it. Don't know if he was using FAST. Says car was too old and out of the system, I think I remember him saying anything older than 10 years they don't have the code for.
And I don't have the code in the glove box (I've never seen that in a 240 BTW, pics anyone?) or the owners manual (believe it was in there also), so I'm stuck with my worn key.
One day I'll probably take the lock cylinder out from the trunk and have a copy made from that.
bleh. whatever...

Dealers do not get keycodes from FAST but from one of two systems
system one is their own internal computer system, this only works if the car was DELIVERED to them from Nissan(sometimes they store info on trade-ins and dealer exchanges). Other than that they keep it up stairs in a building with the rest of the records.
the other one is "NNAnet" (Nissan North America network). Basically its a website that dealerships have access to. There they go into the right Java script driven interface. 26 enter, 5 enter, VIN # enter, and then Nissan will provide the code and where the car's point of origin was(aka where it was first sold).
Problem tho is back in the day some dealers didn't register back with Nissan on all their cars they got (verifying deliveries) and well... not all cars were processed into a computer for records.... hell the older the car the slimmer the chance you can find out the key code.
Most cars from 98 and newer are on the system tho, but if a car gets re-keyed the code is not able to get updated.
Thanks for that info CKAMC. Anyone got access to NNAnet?

Only those that work for the dealer, once your out they delete your individual account.
I can't remember mine anymore... but I wasn't able to choice my username or pass so thats why.
if you cant find your key code.
theres lock smiths that can cut you a new key from looking at your key but not copying it. they dont put your key on there machine they just read it thats what i did. and it saved my lock cylinders from ppl that can jack me.

You can also pull a lock cylinder and have a new key made that's not worn down.
How is this thread gone on for two pages? It's a key. You'd think someone is trying to reinvent the wheel in here.

secret--- get a blank cut for triangles in it.. they have to be equal. slide it in your ignition and viola! most of you will be able to start your cars..
key codes work great when you can get them but not always 100%. I am in the lets say automobile recov. industry. nissans are pretty easy mostly the old ones. s13's can almost be started with anything.

if you check your code in the glove box and there is only one code. that means all the lock cylinder in your car use the same key.
my key was so worn down that it just slips out of the ignition when i turn. just went to a locksmith and got a new one. before i had the new key made, any long key could be used to open my door, but now only they car key will open it. thank god.
he used some lube for the cylinder that made it smooth like butta.

i prefer the generic 37r to this lame key. Also, i've made habit of getting the black plastic one for my key ring and then getting a reg metal one made and I put it in my wallet so if i lose track of my keys, i will almost always have my wallet.

MASTER KEY = KEY00-00125 or KEY00-00118
VALET KEY = KEY00-00081
