View Full Version : 1998 Nissan 200SX Z-Edition

Of course...just another ploy for Nissan to SHAFT US! Here's what I have derived from the pictures:
-Only 200 produced.
-18x8 O.Z. Racing Wheels (Looks like a Super Turismo with different center caps)
-Aluminum dash, floor mat, and running board accents
-Aluminum shift knob
-Rear bumper trim (similar to ones on the Kouki bumper...I think this rear looks better though)
-Cool ass Z edition badge on the dash <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>
-I can't really tell, but it looks like the center part of the door trim on the inside is more of a leather than the suede kinda stuff we got here...I dunno though.
http://home.no.net/bstensru/200sx/
http://www.200sx-ogn.org/V2/klubben/data/biler/BjornS/
I guess we're starting to get some better stuff though.
-R35 (or V35 now I guess) Skyline (G35)
-Y34 Gloria (M45)
-A33 Cefiro (I35)
-F50 Cima (Q45)
Too bad we still get dicked on the engines...
JDM Gloria has engine options are VQ25DD, VQ30DD, VQ30DET, and RB25DET in the 4wd version.
Too bad I also don't think they're going to offer the G35 here with the 4wd system...I think they're still using Atessa over there...

I'd personally rather have the VH45DE than the N/A sixes, but, yeah, a VQ30DET would be sweeeet...
I don't know why they don't offer AWD on the G35... BMW 330xi's and Audi A4 V6 Quattros are everywhere. Of course the Skyline GT's version of ATTESA might not be a performance-oriented system like BMW or Audi's, or the old GT-R's.
That Z-edition is sweet though. That's a different steering wheel right? It looks like a wheel from a kouki 180SX or an R33 Skyline GTS.
If I lived in Europe I'd have a hard time deciding between buying a used S14 200SX or a brand new VW Lupo GTi <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/inlove.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> but now I'm getting off topic...

BTW, that's not a different steering wheel than what you would normally get in an S14 200SX or an S14 Silvia. They came with the 4 spokes, 'cept early '95's (or '94 as they are sometimes listed) came with a 3 spoke, which of course was different than our 3 spoke. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

First off . The VH45 8 cylinder and VQ 3.5 liter six are both awesome engines not to be snickered at. Its also because of Nissan North America that the current 350z came into being . they goaded Carlos Ghosn into doing it,and they won the design competition for it.
Next off we finally did get the skyline and we will get the GTR and the rumor is its going to be a TT VQ35.
Oh yeah and that Z edition Silvia is a joke. Woo hooo, I am going to pay extra for badges and custom paint and wheels and a different steering wheel. Its still the same car.
its also nowhere near what the original 240z was about the 180sx is much truer to that lineage.</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
Who was dissing the VH or the VQ? All I saw was a preference expresses for one vs the other. Seems like you are the only one talking smack. So what if they made a z edition 200sx (not silvia), some people want a factory body kit and rims.
Finaly how is the 180sx more true to the liniage of the 240z than any other s13? The s13 silvia was stiffer and lighter than the 180sx guess you are talking about the hatch. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

IMO that special edition looks pretty average to me. Sure its kinda cool that it was a factory option.......but......with a couple bucks I could peice together something just a classy....maybe even a little sportier. That car looks identical to most slightly modded S14's Ive seen (with the exception of the interior)....so...its nothing really special IMO. I think to make a "special edition" really unique, a special paint scheme could have been offered, dressed up engine bay with higer output engine, .....or some special edition wheels that look a little more unique, yet keeping the OEM look (maybe some gunmetal or chromed R34 wheels or something?!?).
Thats just my opinion.

reread 270r's first post he was dissing the engines we where getting in the cars.
You want to get into how the 180sx is closer to the 240z ok. nearly same wieght balance actually superior. next independant rear suspension. next 145-155 Hp engine in the American version of the hatch and the NA version in Japan
, 240z engine ws 2.4 liter displacement putting out 150HP . The 240z in the early days was a 2400lb car that wound up wieghing 2750lbs by mid 72 . 180sx or 240sx hatch wieghs in at 2800 hmmm very close another similarity.
Yes I cite the Hatch because the 240z was a hatch too! Not a coupe!
Now you want to argue with me about which car is truer to the lineage? get your facts on your 240z straight.
The S13 coupe is closer to the 510 in terms of chassis stiffness and body style . Yes the 510 had IRS the only thing about the 510 was due to the fact that it was a 2000lb car it only needed a 100-125 HP four to make it go decently.
Now you can go on and on but I've been there uuninja owned and driven all of the above mentioned cars . Sold there engines for a business . Sold Triple SSS engines sold FJ20's,
I have been into Nissans for over 20 years . Yes I am an old fart in your eyes but I know what I am talking about and if you want more reference about the comparision of the 240z to the 240sx Hatch then go to Car and Drivers web site and look in their archives they even did an article about the whole thing when the 240sx Hatch debuted in the U.S.
I happen to love 240z's but in all out honesty the 180sx is true to the lineage but superior in handling and weight balance. It was true in price point too . It was an affordable sports car for the money just like the original 240z and now like what Nissan has done again with the 350z.</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>
Well, before you put words into my mouth, maybe I should reiterate what I was saying. By saying we got dicked on the engines, I merely meant that we didn't get ANY engine options for the M45, or the Q45, etc...

Actually, those are rear fog lights. . Came on ALL Euro 200sxs. . That part can be bought... Basically, what they do is. . they cut the bumper (same bumper we have) and then put that part in. The main reason is, the don't have to produce a NEW bumper just to accomodate the longer Euro plates. We have the JDM bumper, because JDM license plates are almost the same size (taller though) ...
The switch for the rear fogs is the blank spot to the very left where u see the rear defrost, hazard, and security "switches"
Also, euro 200sx had optional HEATED SEATS... The switch blanks on the console near the power mirror controls are where the switches for that go... (same switch as on 95-99 Maxima, etc)
The Z edition bumper has that lower trim piece going around it. . Looks f'n NICE IMO. . I want that...

LoL getting all defensive. Um I know that the z was a hatch and similar to the 240sx from a critics stand point. But both having hatches is well, cosmetic. You about the only thing forgot to mention that the KA is an evolution of the L series. Your not educating me. But thanks for playing.
I reread the first post and still I see no dissing of motors. Simply he lamented that Nissan dose not offer AWD on it's high end US cars like BMW and such. Bemoaning Nissan NA not bringing some of it's cooler stuff over. Which is a dead horse, but totally subjective and hence valid complaint. I think there was a bit of sarcasm thrown in there for good measure as well.
As far as the Z edition 200sx being a cheap marketing ploy to separate European consumers form a few more Deutschemarks, pounds, whatever. Well duh! Nissan is a for profit corporation, if they can tack on a few extras at little added cost and bump up the price 15% hell that is gravy. Granted the 200sx z edition is not a true successor to the famed z legacy but if I recall correctly that was largely an American phenomenon anyway.
The idea was probably born of some mid level marketing exec at Nissan and they figured WTF not. Since the 200sx hatch was out of production at that time and that 200sx was the successor.....well if the shoe fits. Had said marketing exec come up with the idea 4 years earlier well you would have had your beloved hatch with z edition trim.
The way I take it is as a neat little foot note to z and s car trivia. Nothing to get your panties in a twist about. But then again I never got the whole brand purest mentality to start with, so maybe I am missing the boat all togehter.

Yeah, even though it's an S14 blacktop SR20DET, they were detuned to 200hp. The internals of the engines aren't changed, but one intercooler pipe is different and the ECU is different (lower boost, higher speed cut).
Trim and style wise the cars are closer to 240SX SE's than Silvias, so you don't get anything extra like different bumpers, interior trim, etc.
Much more cost effective to just import an engine from Japan and add 300ZX brakes if you want one of these cars.

I dunno why it bother's ya so much...I've ALWAYS wanted a rear wiper on my S14. The S14 needs a rear wiper more than the S13 HB's do. Just the way the S14's rear window is, the water just sits on it when it rains. I've thought of trying to source a rear window with the wiper from either Japan or Europe...Just a PITA to find though...

That's a good question... I'd like to know that as well. I'm pretty sure the Zenki model never had a Z edition, but makes me wonder if there were any special models? Actually, this car is a 99 model year. . .The S14 continued beyond 98 in some euro markets... Not sure of the last date, but I've HEARD you could buy it up to 2000 or so? I may be way off on that. . any 200sx owners out there wanna tell us? =)

I like everything except the wheels. I've always been a fan of 5 spoke wheels. Gunmetal would look nice on this one <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>
People who would buy this car are the same people who WILL buy the Integra type "I wanna look like a type R". These people like the look of tuned cars but would never invest the time or money in building a stock car up. Can't really diss them for that.
If you want a rear wiper, apply 3-5 coats of rain X on there. The water won't stay for long <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

The Zenki never had a Z-Edition or any other special edition...excluding the Nismo 270R.
There was another special edition Kouki that is very rare...its the Sportsline Edition. It was made for the Sweden market....the car is pretty much like the Z-Edition, however it was sporting BBS rims, and the interior is still a mystery to me.

They took my "chrome door handle" idea. . haha i was thinking of using them from a Sentra or older Altima, just cause I like the black / chrome / metal look. Maybe if I move to NZ I can have one of these, but maybe not. . haha
Daaamn. . I no longer want a Silvia... Just this SX. =) Looks like Spec R Aero wing... and front bumper?
