from ign.com

September 27, 2007 - IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith's Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels.

We were also advised that Will Smith's son Jaden, 9, is attached to star in the remake. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith starred opposite his dad in last year's The Pursuit of Happyness (http://movies.ign.com/objects/845/845871.html), which was also released by Sony. We understand that this new Karate Kid is currently out to writers.

IGN didn't hear back from Weintraub's office or Smith's reps by time of publish, so until there's official confirmation consider this a rumor.

Wow, that's a surprise. Who would play Mr. Miyagi? Chow Yun Fat?

And isn't Will Smith's kid a little young for the role? Daniel-son was in HS in the movie.

haha oh gosh

as for karate kid, not only will this probably crap over original, but why is will smith trying to put his son in it?

movie industry is much like video game industry at the moment. Less creativity trying to make up for it with the eye candy.

No remake, BUT they did just announce the sequel is official. All the OG cast is back, and the plot revolves around their kids going on their own adventure.

I'm cool with that.

Hollywood is recycling and digging into foreign cinema for remakes.

the next new old idea will be to remake a movie that just came out, instead of an old one.

no i mean like JUST came out.

like start production on the remake one month after the original comes out. not a sequel, but the same plot and everything.
