from the pics it doesnt look super flush tho...

Hmm. Not really diggin it.
It'd look 100x better if the edges were rounded down toward the roof.
mehsilvia
10-24-2007, 09:03 PM
Thats because its an overlay, not flush mount. Its apx 1/8" thick with crazy structural integrity.
Its molded from an S14 roof skin, so it matches the roof contour perfectly.

Looks good. I have an aluminum panel riveted on for my sun roof block off. How is this held on? If its just adhesive id be worried about someone breaking in to the car by peeling that off.

mehsilvia
10-25-2007, 07:53 AM
It is simply applied with a silicone adhesive.
And i wouldnt worry about someone simply "peeling" it off.
Ill see about getting interior pics posted after work.
And personaly, since this a track car, i was looking for function and something that would be race legal. Having that opening just wasnt an option.

I know, we get hounded about S13 parts on a weekly basis. I want to start a group buy program for these low production parts if members are willing to pay for them. A member recently asked me about a back seat overlay, so things like that would require a group buy. We are running out of space right now with molds taking up
valuable space in the shop. So now we have to start being more selective about molds we make. We have plans late next year to buy some land on the outskirts
of El Cajon and drop a slab and a metal building on it. More importantly to Kognition, it creates jobs. :ughug:

I am calculating the cost for the S14 roof right now, which uses three layers of 12oz. reinforcement carbon. I would like to keep it at $1,000 for a 10 person group buy. But it will likely be more like $1,200. That's a group buy mind you. Otherwise they would be closer to $2,000. Dry finish, paintable with no clearcoat.

I guess that carbon panel is OK for a race car, but waay to jank for a streetcar.
It needs to replace just the glass, and still retain the molding, or something to make it look stockish.
kognition
10-28-2007, 10:23 AM
It is a racecar part. Which is why it weighs 1.5 lb's.
And you easily get a watertight seal from it. Unlike our 1st generation version.
I understand the discussion about the edge, but anyone can take some black silicone and smooth the outer edge with that. Giving it more of a tapered edge.
:)

WOW I am in for the group buy on the S14 roof
I would Like to do something like that to lose my sunroof and the rest of the roof for that matter!
My only question is how would it be fitted to the car?
If it would cost 3 times the cost of the roof to have it put on the car then it might not level out the pros and cons.
Anyway besides that you guys are fantastic for what you do for the automotive community, I would do anything to work with you guys...
Give me the word next year and Ill pack my bags and get on a plane.

Thank you, :)
The cost of the roof is negligible when you see how much HP it frees up on the track, not to mention the lowered CG.
Again, a track part, you must have a 6pt RC for this.

Hey thats what I did after you made the recommendation. I still used the tabs that you sent also. Truly a very benefical part I dont have a 6 point roll cage in I have a roll bar. If Kognation does this I would recommend that you all pic one up. Easy part to put in, took longer to take the sunroof out.

Think of that piece of sheet metal as a single laminate. Ours has two laminates, spaced 1/8th" apart. Which will be stiffer? It doesn't matter if you tack weld a sheet of metal to the roof. It will remain... a flat sheet of metal. Just a matter of preference.
hey i never got an answer to my question.
is this carbon peice more structurally solid then just wenlding in a peice of sheet metal?
