Around me, there is an '89 240SX coupe. Silver in colour, with the stock spoiler. Tight looking car. NO rust. The body is absolutely mint.
5-speed, power windows, power locks, etc. etc.
The car itself has 216,000kms on it, but the engine was rebuilt 7,000km ago.
They are asking $2500 CDN (~$1500 USD).
SHOULD I GO FOR IT? I think I should, but I have a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR PROBLEM.
My parents. I'm 18, and they gave me an '89 Plymouth Sundance with 113,000km on it for nothing. I just pay for insurance, gas, and maintenance. My mom doesn't really give a shit what I do, but my dad tells me to just stop thinking about cars every time I try to talk to him about it. He works at a Chrysler dealership and tells me that my car is worth about $3000 to them there. However, he won't let me simply fuckin trade up vehicles. He could easily take my car in, get the 3 grand, then he and I could go get the 240SX. But no, he tells me to stop thinking about f**king cars, blah blah, they're only good for getting you from point A to point B.
Ahh well, I'll break his spirits soon enough... I hope...
What should I tell him? I need ammo to use in my battle here... Why should he allow me to get rid of the Sundance for the 240? Help!!!

Well, I would stay away from telling him about handling capabilities and RWD (although he prolly already knows about that). Start to tell him about how the engine is rebuilt, and it would be cheaper for you, since you won't have to worry much about the engine. I don't know much about this plymouth of yours, but there has to be something wrong with it. If non of that works, be nice and tell me where you live so I can buy it, ~$1500 is a deal. Only problem is this Canada stuff, anyone know how much it is to send a car from Canada to IL

I went from a mazda 323 sedan, that would slow down going up hills. It got me from Point A to B.
But it sounds like you found the same sorta coupe I've found. Cept mine was burgandy.
Things to look for, drive it. Make sure everything works. Speedo, etc. I know when I got the car, brakes had to be done, new starter, digital speed replaced (just before I bought it). Those are some expensive fixes. And I know how much a plymouth sucks in comparison to a nissan. But whereabouts in Canada are you? RWD is a lot more difficult in the show. Can be done, just put snow tires and weight in the back. Its a lot different, trust me.
Hopefully you can crack your dad. Best thing, make sure its your money. Then they can't complain. But insurance will be high. Just a heads up.

I know which car you are talking about, the one in St. Catherines right?

Yeah I'm looking at that car too. I have the cash, but I'm not a fan of coupes. I dunno, I live in London, so I may drive up there over the weekend to check it out.

Did you see the $2000 greenish hatchback for sale in Toronto?
187,000 km, 5 spd., CD-Player, E-tested. Although it looks too good to be true
Anyways, good luck with getting the car.

no offense but he needs to stop thinking about chryslers more than you need to stop thinking of cars try taking him for a test drive in the 240SX and let him see the difference. i'm not ripping on your car or anything but i went from an 87 plymouth horizon to a 90 hatchback and it was a night and day difference. the only think i missed about the plymouth were the seats (more comfortable). my insurance even dropped when i bought the 240SX. i still can't figure that one out.
a 240SX is a lot of car for a little money, especially when only $1500 with a rebuilt motor, that's a steal! and if cars are things that are as simple as getting us from point a to point b, then he should just simply let you have the car. it's not the end of the world! but i guess you gotta go by the rules if you're living with them. good luck, hope you get it.

By the way, if that's green, then I must be colourblind to hell. It looks purple to me.

hey sorry to burst ur bubble.. but i'd think twice bout that car. thats not the originial spoiler.. the coupes didn't come with that type.. looks more like a fastback spoiler. and that car has alos be repainted.. look at the mubflaps and mirrors.. plus since the engine has been rebuilt that is a good and bad sign.. i say it's a good buy for 1500 as long aas u get it THORHOULY (<--sp?) checked.
just my 2 cents
i saw that one...
i'd take it to nissan and have them take a good look at it, it might cost you a few bucks but you'll know if it's not for you. i like silver but that pic makes me think it might not have been done properly... and it's not the original spoiler.
if it runs good, and the rebuild was good, and there is no bondo, and it's not to much to cert & e-test then it's a good deal for sure.
and coupes are way better than hatches. i've seen about 6 new kids with hatches at the university thinking they're the shit. sorry. if i wanted a car that everyone else had i'd buy a civic. come to think of it, there are more s13 hatches on campus than there are civics!!!
plus the coupe is liter.
also check and see if it has LSD, and make sure the interior is nice.
but forget your dad. you wont learn anything if you listen to your parents. buy now learn now

bing, the Sundance isn't mine. My parents own it. They just give it to me to drive. Thus, I can't just go out and sell it.
Also, its a Canadian 240, so it has an LSD for sure. All Canadian 240SXs had LSDs, regardless if they had HICAS or not. This is a given.

damn, I didn't know I had the LSD. Sweet!
Anyway to confirm this? What are hicas btw?

Just thought of it after posting, thats not the stock spoiler?! I have the same one. However, I come to think of it, I think it was aftermarket, cause I had to hook up its third break light, and removed my other one.
There is something for you to check too.

Yes, it is true that all Canadian 240SXs have an LSD. I can guarantee you that it is true. If your car isn't an SE, take a look under there. You'll see the housing because they all have the LSD.
HICAS is the 4-wheel steering system that comes on the SE models only.

185,000 km on a 91... new clutch, new battery, and new brakes. $3500 Canadian (~$2200 US). Looks pretty good if all those things check out.
There are a few other good ones on that site, but they are all automatic... blah.
