Is this a spun rod bearing?

Pardon my lack of knowledge...but I have never seen anything like this. Is this what a spun rod bearing is?

Ok...so now that you guys can see...I have some questions.

1. What caused this?
2. Is rod a nice paper weight now?
3. Can crank be fixed or is it screwed?

i cant see all that well.... that is a rod bearing and yes it is damaged....yes it does look like it spun but i could be wrong..... a spun bearing is when the bearing spins inside the rod.....usually causes alot of damage fairly quickly.... you should be able to turn the crank and order new bearings

Honestly though, if you have to ask this and are planning on putting a motor together. Take it to a shop to have it done or it will spin another bearing. Not to be a dick.

Your other pictures sure seems like a spun bearing, may have been caused by oil starvation. I'm not sure about the rod, may be the machine shop might be able to tell you if it is straight and not out of round, the crank might be salvageable if the damage is not too deep.

Just asking since i have never PERSONALLY seen a spun bearing. I assumed it was due to the fact that the notches that hold the bearings in place are gonne...and the inside of the rod looks polished (as if the bearing spinned inside the rod). I can see the rod end is completely blackened and I can only assume that the rod is damaged due to this overheating. The crank journal looks scarred but not anything that catches my finger nail.

Yeah you spun the bearing. Looks like the rod got messed up too. You would need to take the crank to a machine shop and prolly run a larger bearing. But, the rod looks like it's missing chunks.

it's hard to tell from the pics but man..rod bearings are usually just half moons with no side wall lip ....that looks like a goofy thrust bearing to me....thrust bearing is what keeps the crank from walking front or back, it's in the middle held in by the main caps or girdle...did you put a thrust bearing on a rod?

you have to check to see if the rod is still perfectly round, if so, u can clean it up and use it.

yeah we are jsut returning the short block to where we bought it.

Agreed on all counts, bearing is spun, rod and crank would need refinishing and oversized bearings. Grab another block, way less hassle.
