I have a 1991 240sx automatic that I just bought. However, ever time I put it in reverse it makes a clanking noise in reverse. how serious is this? Should it be fixed immediately before catastrophic failure or it will it be fine til my sr swap. When I swap out the differential with a lsd, will it stop this from occuring? Thanks in advance.

Is the car clanking while it stands still in reverse, or are you actually moving in reverse when you hear the noise?
HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!
Also does it go away when you push the gas while backing up or does it get louder? Or is the noise ALWAYS there once it's in reverse while the engine is running?
More info please.

I just got it registered so I've been driving it around. Anyway, it only does it when you are moving in reverse not while sitting. However today it was hard to get it into park cause it got stuck between reverse. Any ideas what this could be?

It only happens sometimes when you hear a loud clanking noise from the back. It doesn't do it the whole time you are moving but it only happens during movement. Maybe a part of the driveshaft or something?
Still haven't figured this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Check your driveshaft, differential bushings, and/or rear sub-frame bushings.
Is it a continual noise or only at brief moments.

When in reverse and moving, it's only a temporary clanking and then it stops but it's pretty loud. Also I hear this sound, don't know if their related, while driving only if I open the driver window coming from underneath the car but that could be the exhaust clanging - it's like a ping noise that is random but at least every 400m. Thanks in advance.

Well how much MORE help are you going to need before you actually get under there and check shit out? Quit posting on here, asking for us to e-diagnose your car. Go out in the garage and jack it up from the rear and check out the back end.
DO IT!!! DO IT NOW!!!
