I was taking apart my z32 calipers and noticed some surface rust on one of the pistons. I was wondering if i could just use a brillow pad and scrape it off or would i have to buy new piston. heres some pictures of the caliper and the bad piston.

If it is just surface rust, I would go to the hardware store and buy some rust remover first. It should take it off right away. But I dont see any problems with using a brillo pad to take it off.

If its cheap to rebuild I would just rebuild. New seals never hurt anything

I used 1500 grit sand paper and brake fluid for lubrication( on the outer part of the cylinder). It takes a while but works out well. You may be able to use a more aggressive sand paper but be careful not to score the metal.
As far as the inside of the piston, I used a dremel tool and a brass wheel.
