View Full Version : Needed a little welding done; am I being unreasonable?

I bought a steel 2.25" intercooler hot pipe to replace the crappy stock SR pipe, it had a GReddy type RS flange on it. I'm going to run a 1G DSM BOV, so I bought a new steel DSM flange and took them both to a local performance shop to have them weld it.

There's already a little ~1" piece of pipe coming off of the hot pipe, and the GReddy flange is welded onto that, so cutting it off and welding on the new one should be very straightforward. Took it all to the shop on Monday; I told the guy exactly what I wanted, he looked at it and said it would be very simple, no problem at all. Wouldn't cost any more than $25-30, be done on Tuesday or Wednesday. Great, I say thanks and leave.

It's Thursday, they haven't touched it. Today he said they've been busy and will get it done tomorrow. I kinda need (well, *really* want) it done tomorrow so I can put everything on the car this weekend, and it's kinda irritating.

Is it unreasonable to expect it to get done by now, or at least tomorrow? I can understand if they're busy, but how long does that really take? For you welding guys...how hard is that? A BOV flange on a little piece of pipe?

Im reality is not hard at all, but if they are busy then they are busy - there is no way around that.

No your not wrong. They shouldnt have told you it would be done on that day if it couldnt. I mean theres not really any complications they woudl run into and if they were busy in the first place they shouldhave never taken the job

i know what your saying, welders told me that my frame should be welded and done in three days and ready to be picked up, but for me they called let me know they were running behind schedule and needed one more day, which prepared me alittle more, still a little upset but a call well appreciated, they should have called u

i work at a shop. im the welder fabricator and i love when poeple come to me with these projects. they drop off the parts and i weld it as soon as they leave. its quick and easy money. if you still need it welded, i can. if you want to ship it. where are you in virginia. im in maryland, maybe you can just bring it by..id weld it while you were there. im not trying to feed you BS but i dont get very many welding jobs, most are by appointment. good luck.

you got to understand that people are busy sometimes. when they have to finish something else thats more important thats what they got to do first.

To weld that takes all of 10 mins, and they told him it would be done

yeah dude, if you say your going to have something done. then do it. i work with people like that. then we end up with pissed off customers. and i end up doing it instead. being busy is fine. eh..im not getting into it. i hate people that dick around like that. i deal with it at the shop i work at and i cant stand it.

When I got my BOV flange welded, the guy did it right away and it took about 20 minutes. But all in all, if the shop is busy, it may take longer than expected. But if a shop tells me it takes a day or two to weld a flange, I would just go somewhere else. Its easy money and if the shop can't make time for it that same day, then go find a shop that is smart enough to get it done quick.

Bigger things take more time and you have to leave room for error. Like if this was a cage we were talking about then of course. Especially when someones saftey is in mind. But this is a 10 min weld job he could have done on the spot. plus they had days to get it done. Don't tell a customer 1 thing and do another. Always a bad move regardless of the situation.

no sense in arguing about it. just take it somewhere else.

nothing makes me more mad than people saying something will take longer than it will.

thats why i like resturantes. cuz they say 30 minutes and your like "fuck. fine. whatever"
then its only a 10 minute wait, and your all happy

1st rule of service: underpromise and overdeliver. Knock off the easy jobs first. Sounds like that's too much for that shop to handle.

its going to take him 15 mins to do. I just came from welding up my buddies seat bracket in and we spend so much time BSing around as the welding didn't take that long at all.
I can understand they're busy, but its not going to be 3 days to weld something as simple as this.

If it was me.

I would've been like oh $25-30 in a couple of days.

How about I give you $45 and you do it right now.

Blam... saves my time and the money is worth it.

At least I get to see him do it and if there's any problems then I could just tell him right then and there. Plus it doesn't take that long to do that. Not that I weld, but I have common sense.

id bet that they probably forgot, and were playing it off as if it required actual time.

its really not hard at all, my little sister could weld it for you.

Yeah, that should have been done on the spot...

Yeah, it's mainly the overpromising that bugs me. I want to get this done so I can get my car on the road (stock hot pipe/rubber hose is kinked and restricting flow and the vacuum hose routing is all f'ed up, which will be fixed with the new hot pipe) and Saturday's really the only time I can work on the car. If not then, it'll be another week :(

If they're busy and can't get it done within a few days or whenever, then that's fine; their workload isn't my business. But, let me know so I can just take it to a muffler shop or something.

For the simple fact they told you a few days they never planned to get it done. Ive gotten more complicated welding jobs done while I was standing there. I say you punch them in thier craw.

Never goto a "performance" shop unless you have to. 90% those places are run on hopes and dreams of people that can't work in a real shop.

you also can't expect them to prioritize your $30 dollar job if they have other customers dumping much more money into them for welding larger more time consuming/expensive things.

SHIFT_*grind*
10-19-2007, 08:34 AM
No. But can I expect them to be honest with me about when they actually can get it done? I would hope so.

1st rule of service: underpromise and overdeliver.

Bingo. If they say it'll be done by a certain day, it should be. They shoulda told you Friday, then got it done for you by Thur. Then you'da been like "Damn these guys are top of things. They do great work and quick!"

Instead they did the opposite and your not happy.

Not the way to do things at all.

basically someone walked in with a bigger more important job than yours (one that makes more money) so I would go down there and take it else where and not use them again.

Sir
10-19-2007, 09:51 AM
15mins of welding (at most) and 30bux
that comes out to $120 an hour, pretty damn important job if you ask me.

out here in ny, at our welding shop or shops theres really two where people get work done and neither of them have anything ready on time. my one man at the welding shop thats all he does is weld, all day, you have to actually be there for the weld for him to get anything done, and the other one you gotta be on the phone or there bothering for it to get done on time, but the second mentioned shop is getting better at finishing on time,

im used to it by now

but when i first went in to pick some thing up i was pissed

waiting is part of the game,

just my .02

In the end, they had it done today, and it was $20. So overall, I'm pleased :) Although I'll probably still go to a muffler shop next time I want something simple done.
