Hey guys, as some of you know I have been about to change my tranny fluid. Well this afternoon i tried too. Got it all drained and then re plugged it. I couldnt reach the fill plug without some way to raise hte car on all four wheels(ideas?)so i decided to fill it through the shifter. I started to take apart my console and stuff, and removed the first rubber boot. And looked at the second rubber boot that seals the actual tranny. Well this boot was cracked all the way around and covered with tranny fluid. I cut it off and looked at the ball on the shift rod that it rotates on. This thing has about 1/4" of play back and forth in all directions. Is it supposed to do this? When i lose traction to my back wheels my shifter always swings back and forth violently, could the play of this all and the white urithane piece aroudn it be the cause of this? And how would i fix this? Do shortshifters come with a new white urithane piece that would keep my shifter from shaking? Do dealers usually have stuff like these urathan pieces and the rubber boots? How much do they cost? Thanks guys.

short shifters should come with a replacement bushing. dealers should have them also, or you can order one through the dealer. not sure how much they cost though.

What about the rubber boot? Would a short shifter come with one also?
yup, they come with the innermost rubber boot which is the one I believe you were talking about.

is the play around the bushing side to side normal also? or would a shortshifter/new bushing fix this?

a new bushing should fix it. in my S13 i had a lot of play... in an S13 with a new bushing there was none... my s14 has a bit...

The play you get when you break end loose is not from the play in the bushings or in the ball joint of the stick. The play you get back is motion coming back from the drivetrain. As you break the rear tires loose the entire rear end rotates and or moves back and forth. The motion is then transfered through the driveshaft and transmission to the shifter through the flour. This is sum what normal for a car with wear. Solutions would include new polyuerethane motor and transmission mounts and stiffer suspension. Also, if you do some day do the rear suspension it is a good idea to replace any envovled bushing with after market replacments from energy or someone.
