Well im selling the STI and picking up a s13 here shortly. Im looking to build the car for track purpose/occasional mountain run. Reliability is a issue. Ive had a sr20 car before and kick my self in the ass for selling it. Ive been researching and it seems like there is more after market support for the sr than the ka. I know eventually ill have to do pistons, bearings etc for my build.
My goals are about 325-400 max whp. I figured that the full race twin scroll gt30r would be a good turbo on either the sr20 or ka. I really want something responsive as well.
Is the ka a better choice or the sr. I really do not want to do alot of custom fabrication to get parts to work.

congrats on getting rid of that sti... as for a choice between ka-t and sr, its really personal preference. if you have the chance, drive them both and see for yourself the difference. ka-t is going to take some work to build right but it can be a fun build. sr is good because you can get it to your power range pretty easy. its all personal preference.

^^ EYEMFASTER :why dont you try helping the guy instead of wasting your time posting worthless words.
Personally I plan on building up a fully built KA with the Brian Crower Fully Counterweighted crankshaft which would allow you to rev higher and make everything a lot smoother. I think but not sure that KA is capable to produce more torque which would allow you to power out of the corner pretty nicely while the SR is high revving and usually more horsepower than torque. If you do some research it'll help you figure out what setup is good for you.
Maybe in the near future, I would be able to fully build a sr20 and a ka-t and put it to the test haha
For the power range that you are looking for, I think you should look into the Garrett gt3071r I've heard really good things about them and usually reach full boost at about 3700rpm? I think

so your saying reliability is an issue if your building your motor for track. than it is an issue. you can build it. beating your motor at the track can kill your motor. if you want reliability keep your motor stock and dont track it. or build it and dont track it. keep it the way it is.

its up to you.... you cant go wrong with either engine.
The KA will be cheaper to build but not as easy to tune.
This has been discussed to death.

Maybe i was unclear of what i meant for reliability. I know the sr's are pretty good at handling moderate power levers (300whp ish). Would a ka with simple pistons bearings cams etc be able to handle 300-350? Or would i have to worry about it poping everytime at the track
Yes I know track racing is hard on motors, just replaced mine this past summer. However I want something that will last maybe 2 seasons before needing rebuild

I think when you build a motor, go all out or go home, build it right the first time and make it last as long as possible, dont just replace the pistons or just the rods, replace everything brand new have everything machined,honed, polished and balanced correctly, if you are on a budget dont bother building a motor and just go with a stock sr20 cause you can get to some pretty good numbers with the stock block.

^^^yes, then you can do KA... you just gotta tune it right, like everything else in the tuner world... for more torque, id say ka, with LOW compression pistons, cams, and a descent size turbo, like a gt28r, or t3/t4 should definltely put you at 300-400 hp... ka-t's are fuckin gnarly.. lol.. good luck.

i've seen stock KA's at 300 hp level. but a build is good to hold a higher moderate level of HP.
if i ever choose either an SR or a KA i rather build both of them. sooner or later you'll want more than 300-350 hp if your a whore for power like me.you make your own decisions on what you want to do not others to tell you what to do. decide for yourself what is best.

yeah you can defin get that much power stock, but unless you baby that shit on stock internals, your gonna a hard time making it last a while if your lookin for reliability.. buil all the way! itll be worth it! good luck!

FUCKING SEARCH
KA = rebuild
SR = 400 before rebuild
any more than 400 and you should consider a I-6, V-6, V-8 instead

KA-T vs. SR
Coke vs. Pepsi
PC vs. Mac
Real vs. Silicone
No one wins and it's all based on personal preference.
Do the research and decide for yourself.
Research does not mean starting a new thread to discuss an old topic.
