Posting this for a buddy, he picked up a silvia with the hks gt25/40r, drove it for a couple days, seemed to run fine, he set his boost controller, drove it for a couple more days, and then he heard a ticking, turned his heater off, ticking stopped for a bit. Got home, car started to not boost, went for a test drive, started to smoke crazy, kind of white, had severe lack of power and parked it.
I came over, checked it out, we double checked and cleaned all the IC piping made sure all the connections were tight, started it up, seemed to be running better at idle, took it for a drive and got extreme smoke again.

Took the turbo and manifold off, there was damage to the turbine, seemed like 1.5mm chunks out of it, and now there is no compression in cyl 4(the one by the firewall) and 120 accross the rest of the cylinders.

Anyway, we want to know what happened, getting new engine, rebuilt turbo, but just want to know wtf is up, so this doenst happen again!

sounds like either to much boost, or not enough oil. and the ticking noise would be rod knock?

This is just an assumption. someone else confirm??

turbo swallowed some valves maybe

was he running a filter on the turbo?
do the blades look smashed in or sheared off?

it sounds kinda like the turbo sucked something up and spit it into your dead cylinder

and it definatly sounds like you fucked a valve up, the ticking is probabaly a bent valve. or the lifter for the bent valve. this being caused by the object.

and the smoke is oil getting pushed passed the seals, was there a boat load of oil in the i/c pipes?

thats my best guess.

I concur with the boost/oil symptoms.

You wont really know until you pull the head off and look at the piston, but sounds to me like you were melting the snot out of it... and your turbo was paying the price.

The ticking wasnt that bad, pretty minor I would say. Ive heard rod knock before and stuck/ticking valves and it was neither.
Yeah, he was running a filter on the turbo, it was fairly clean as well and seemed to be in good condition, no holes....
and yeah there was quite a bit of oil in the IC pipes, why we cleaned it then reinstalled. I dont know what he had the boost set to, but I know that he was messing around with it.
Im thinking it could be a blown ring or something to do with the valvetrain. and then whatever part broke/ or was damaged, when into the turbo and caused the damage there.

thought that came to my mind was... chunks out of the turbine, which means peices are missing. So where are those peices? Maybe reason for no compression on 4?
