View Full Version : Eggs In Radiator

I encountered an interesting situation over the weekend that I thought I would share since I thought it was pretty funny and pretty cool. Well here I go. I forgot to turn my electric fans on while i left my car idleing while I stepped outside to check on my friends car. Next thing I know people are yelling my name telling me to look at my car. My car is engulfed in steam. I open the hood and coolant everywhere. I bought 2 gallons of water and started pouring some in, and noticed it wasnt getting full at all. I looked into the hood and see water just spilling out. I cracked the radiator in about 3 places. =( Well its late at night, and nothing is open. So no stop leak for me. So I drove as fast I as could to the nearest convinence store while shutting off the engine periodically. Got to a 711, bought a dozen eggs, and cracked two into the radiator. Next thing I know I watch the leak slowly stop, and go home.
Thanks mythbusters!!! lol.

my uncle did that for a year cuz he was cheap and didnt want to buy a radiator.

It holds very well. Sealed the crack in about 5 minutes. I ran 3 events + DD duties with the egg repair. Would have lasted longer had I not destroyed the radiator due to other circumstances.

it was also done on the show "Bullrun" hosted by Goldberg. the bmw had a leak so he went to the super market and put eggs.

Another emergency repair tip is you can drop aspirin in the battery acid and it should give you enough power to get a start out of it.

My e-fan's wired up to a switch too and the spade connector often gets disconnected for some unknown reason so I'll have to remember this one. Might could save my life some day.

dont be stupid.
common logic would prove that this is a very temporary fix that could cause other problems, such as a complete coolant flush.
its a last minute resort, not a smart fix. a smart fix is repairing your coolant leak AND installing a fan system that WORKS PROPERLY.

i wonder what it does to your entire coolant system..
if theres chunks of scrambled egg flowing inside my motor, i would definitely not feel safe about that.

my friends dad owns an ae86 hatch that he never ever wants to get rid of since i used to bug her to ask him a lot. anyway, she always told me that she put eggs in the engine bay somewhere, i never watched that episode so i never figured it out, but now i know.

The same thing wouldve happened if he had 58 relays. He needs a thermostatic switch that switches a relay to turn on the fans, thats what he needs.

Well I don't really care, cause Im buying a new radiator, and this engine is gonna be gone this weekend. (hopefully)
Are you sure you didnt crack the head and or block as well?
Block is fine head is fine.
...oh, I opened up the cap to see if there was anymore egg in there so I could take a picture or something. Just looked like normal coolant. =)
ixfxi
10-17-2007, 01:20 AM
How can you say that the block is fine? You have no way of measuring warpage. Just because a car runs doesnt mean its OK.
Besides the small coolant passages that run through the radiator, what about the passages that run through the motor? There is a small weep hole in the car's thermostat, its there and serves a purpose.
There are so many reasons why NOT to do shit like this, unless you're stranded and absolutely dont give a fuck about the vehicle you're "fixing."

You should just have driven it without coolant. That would be more interesting.

HAHA, nice fix, but now it's time to fix your fan as everyone said. From start to finish it costs me $70 to put Altima fans in my car and run them from a relay, $50 for fans and $20 for the wire and crimps since I had run out of those at the time and had to pay AutoZone prices. :( I'm even using a Nissan relay, lol.

maybe you should keep a dozen eggs in your trunk. that way you'll be prepared in the case of an emergency.

3rd that, i wish they had more re-runs, it should go to where the leak is and get solid or semi solid or hardboiled lol. its soft so i wouldnt worrie about the water pump, worse thing i could see happening is egg salad. if it turned solid in the head or block that could be a issue.
I saw MacGyver do that in an episode once.

I've driven my car daily without coolant for over a month. Not purposely, I just didn't know that the radiator had a gaping hole in it, and somehow the temperature was staying normal. I was a noob to cars, plus it didn't start overheating until I removed the clutch fan one day, which is when I found out that my radiator was completely dry. I don't know how my motor survived through that, but I fixed the hole, put my clutch fan back in, and installed an electric fan as well, so now I'm staying cool.

seems many have exhaust leaks :)
coolant is not always necessary to prevent overheating although if you push an engine without it it will overheat. It's BIG function is anti-corrosion. You can add quite a few things to the water and get a higher boiling point.
Also many don't use distilled water and that also causes a lot of build up issues inside an engine.
