I've become interstead in the s14 lately, reading up on them and being addicted to psi, the subject of the sr20det  came up fairly early. heres some basic questions that I've not been able to find an answer to. most japanese motors are supposed to be fairly fresh.. maybe 30k(?), is there a law in japan regarding the max amount of miles for an engine? are the simple things like starters, altenators, oil filters available stateside? What is an ignitor chip?-this is the first i've heard of them.  does up-ing the boost to 13-14psi require more than limiting vacuume to the wastegate? or will fueling and ignition be able to compensate for the increase. i've seen the hp# of the sr20det hover around 210, is that wheel or factory claimed crank?

max amount of miles on the engine a japanese law? the engines u see for sale are used and from jdm spec silvias/240sx's. i don't think they'd beat u down n throw u in prison for having 120,000 miles on ur engine over there. n ~ 210 hp like u said on the sr20det isn't to the ground.

i'm actually pretty sure there is a law concerning emissions about 30000 miles.  as far as performance, to the crank,

S13 (1991-94 red valve cover, 94+ black in 180sx) 205
S14 (1994-98 in silvia) 220
S14 (99- in silvia) 255

With regards to power, the UK spec sr20det puts out 197bhp (flywheel) standard but you usually find it to be 200+ if you have it tested. The JDM and Austalian ones run 220hp (flywheel) stock as I think they run higher boost. They use the same engine as the Pulsar GTIR. If you up the boost from standard you must alter the ecu fuelling + timing settings otherwise it will starve at the top end of the rev range and kill the motor.

The reason for the low miles on the Japanesse motors are because of registration there.  After so many years the registration and inspection is so high that it is easier to get a new car then keep the current car.  Inspection is nothing like here.  Got a scratch..failed.....

Plus,  Most Japanesse do not drive there car everyday.  You would never get anywhere.  Traffic is so bad there.  I lived there for 9 years.  You have to prove you have a parking space before you can even buy a car.

As for parts here in the states:  The oil filter, some Gaskets, and Ignitor chip can be bought here at your local auto shop.  Some shops (Mine and others) do carry all of the other parts that are not easily found here in the states.

The ignitor chip is kind of like a coil.  It tells and sends current to you spark plugs.  The SR is a Direct fire system.  This means the coil packs are on top of the spark plugs.  You do not have a normal distribter (SP), there are no real plug wires.  Your computer will handle all of your timing and stuff.

To crank up the boost on a stock SR,  yes chang the vacumm reading to the wastegate.  But you can only go up to about 14psi before you need to change fuel pressure, injectors, headgasket,  and ECU.

I hope this helps you.
