Okay, a few friends and I were arguing a little while ago about saving gas. So, we basically were talking about the scenario of....

Say you were driving 100 miles at 80mph... Then you drove it at 40mph... Which one would you use more gas on and why?

My theory, if you drive somewhere faster, not saying i do, but if i was to, then i would waste more gas, but for a shorter amount of time... Drive slower, waste less gas for a longer amount of time, vise versa... Idk, just somethig to think about...

Now lets argue! Hahahaha... Just something to do if you're bored.

60MPH is the golden ticket in 90% of vehicles

that sounds about right...

consumer reports did a investigation of this, and 55-70 was the efficiency zone for like 90 percent of the cars in the US, so yakota is right on the mark

Solution: Buy a motorcycle.

the mpg gauge on my 4wd suzuki peaks at 48mph. at 65mph it's only 2mpg lower than peak. at 85mph it's 6mpg lower.

Solution: Buy a bicycle.

There you go, fixed it. Saves plenty of gas.

my 350z is most efficient at 75, the wife's Grand Cherokee is at about 72. 1000 miles trips back and forth between AL and WI gave me plenty of time to figure this out.

this is great, i didnt mean like save gas, i kinda meant like which way do you think would use more gas.. its ok tho... its all pointless either way.. hahhaha.

On some old cars with white tick clusters, the 55mph tick is orange since it's the most gas efficient.

Then I saw a commercial on MTV to drive at 60mph since it's the most gas efficient.

IDK.

To answer the original question though, I think 40mph would be more efficient. It'd be like 1800rpm's in 5th (in an SR). 80mph would be somewhere around 3500rpm's in 5th. 40's closer to 60 than......wait, shit, it's not, damn. Well, 3500+rpm just seems to me like a gas wasting rpm. I don't really care about wasting gas though. Eh, whatever.

I'm pretty sure that orange mark has more to do with what the speed limit on most highways was back then. ;)

^^ im pretty sure it was the speed limit actually... FORBIDDEN TO GO MORE THAT 55!!! AHHHHHHHHH! lol.

55-60mph is about right, there are graphs published for this thing i think

wind resistance is a squared term so 40 compared to 80 may only be double the speed, but it will have 4 times the wind resistance. Drafting a big rig can help a lot, lol.

^^^ wow i never even considered wind resistance.. aha.. good call.
