Does anyone know if the upper oil pan needs to be removed to replace the oil pickup on an SR? I think I remember doing it with just the lower pan removed but I'm not positive, can anyone give me some confirmation?

no i dont think you have to take off the upper oil pan. i think all you need to do is remove the lower oil pan, and then the baffle between the upper and lower pan.

Cool, thats what I thought. Anyone done it recently that can confirm this?
if you take off the lower oil pan, 2 bolts will be very easy to do, its the third thats a little tricky.

What are you doing with the oil pick up? A good mod for them is to mill out the sides of the opening by 2mm.... I was told no bigger cause then you get too much oil flowing into the motor...

I'm just replacing it for a customer, not modding it, so I need to know how much labor is involved and I need to make sure the upper pan doesn't have to be removed.

I read it again All you need to do is remove the lower oil pan only. its only two bolts for the pick up

I have done this about 2 months ago, you do not have to remove the upper Alum pan. This is not necessary but it does make it a lot easier. IIRC there are a total of 2 or 3 10mm bolts holding the pick-up down.
You can use a ratchet on the easier ones to get at but
An open-ended wrench can get the harder to reach bolts, it just a tricky angle but not difficult.
It's a bit more time consuming to remove the Alum. Pan because of the series of bolts and following proper torquing.

I just said its 2 bolts, (12mm iir) R&R of Pick up will take no more than 5 min.

Could be wrong(been a year or two since I have looked at my pickup) but I think IIIXziuR is right. It is 3 10mm bolts. Two for the gasket and one bolt to triangulate the pickup.

oh right forgot about that one m._.m Maybe it was 2X10mm for the Pick up and 1X8mm for the bracket, im just going off my pics when i ripped mine apart.
Anyway not important bottom line yes you can remove the pick up only removing the lower oil pan
