I had a little problem with a hole in my resonator. It has been making my exhaust sound sub par. I was getting tired of the rattling, but didn't really wanna buy a new exhaust so I decided to have a go at fixing it myself. I don't know how to weld so I turned to JB weld and coors light cans. I really wanted to use budweiser cans but coors light is still selling 36 packs and if anyone has taken an econ. class, you understand buying in bulk is more economical.

ok, so here's some pictures of what I got accomplished tonight. I took 4 beer cans, cut off the tops and bottoms, made rectangle aluminum sheets, ironed them to flatten them out, and jb welded them together. then i took my exhaust off and used jb weld and thermosteel to patch up the hole. I'll post pictures in the morning when everything has cured to show how it turns out. ...i know, this is awesome.

oh i normally drink better beer. but when i'm drinking to get drunk i get the cheap stuff. i really don't even like coors that much. when i drink cheap beer, i usually go for bud light. oh well, tonight was fun.

now i'm just waiting for my invitation to ziptied. :keke:

i used to work at a smog shop and we'd see that all the time. works well as a quick fix. lol. i'm kinda disappointed to see that you didn't fork out the extra dough for the champagne of beers, seeing that we drive the champagne of all cars. that kinda makes me wanna wrap my entire muffler in pbr cans, just cuz its pretty....

Should have used Sapporo cans. They're indestructible, and makes for a more JDM exhaust. :keke:

aw man, jdm cans. why didn't i think of that??

garbury, that's exactly what i was thinking about doing as well. i was just bored last night so i decided to have some fun "fixing" my resonator. if, and by if i mean when, this doesn't work, i'll cut the resonator out and weld some straight pipes in its place.

yea, that thermosteel is made for high heat applications such as exhaust manifolds though. the box says it gets stronger as it gets hotter. jb weld claims to be effective up to 500 degrees F.

i'll let you guys know if it falls off once i start driving around with it.

i used a jack stand. the picture that i posted where i'm under the side of the car was when I was seeing what size socket i needed. i put a jack stand under the car before i started wrenching.

What made you THINK of doing that?

I think, if it works, you've just started the new "tuner fad". hewheheh. With as much Miller Lite as I drink, I could easily do my entire exhaust from one weeks worth of drinking.

As for the thread and pics...nice accomplishment, but there was FAR too little drinking pics.

there was lots of drinking involved during and after the process. i just posted the more "important" pictures. i'll add more drunk pictures once i add the update pictures. i'm going out to put my exhaust back on right now. i really want to take a lap around the neighborhood before i put the exhaust back on though. sr's sound nasty with no exhaust.

ok, just got the exhaust back on. started up my car and it sounds amazing. no rattling or buzzing. i was afraid the cans weren't going to be solid enough and they would vibrate but they aren't making any funny noises.

i'll post pics as soon as i get done cleaning up.

now we shall see if this is actually great success. i'll keep you guys posted as to how long this beer can patch lasts.

WithChile, i'm so glad your first post on zilvia was in my thread and it was about beer.

by the way, i do actually drink nice beer. it's just that most nice beers come in glass bottles and i didn't really think glass would be as easy to work with. there aren't a whole lot of premium beers that come in cans that i like. i wish i had thought of a jdm beer like kirin or asahi as ThatGuy suggested.

anyway, back on topic. just got back from a quick test drive. i let it get up to operating temp, took it to 7k rpm, 0 problems so far.

i seriously seriously doubt it. that'd be worse than a cop giving you an m.i.p. because you were taking out the trash and it had empty beer cans in it.

the time-wasting part is enough justification, i mean you could've wasted time doing better things - even jerking off would be more productive.

this reminds me of one of my really stupid friends, who attempted to fix his the header on his MKIII NA Supra. It had a hole so he took the aluminum from a floppy disk and jb-welded it over the hole. Yeah, good thinking.

That held for about 3 seconds.

Note: computer programmers can be great with computers, but IDIOTS when it comes to mechanical things.

did you read the bottom of the very first post? if not, it says "Before anyone takes this too seriously, please know that this was just for fun."

this was directed towards people like you. i think my car will get less "jank" as time goes by. i'm about to graduate college (with practically zero lones to repay thanks to scholarships) and then i'll have the money to spend on stuff like new exhaust. for now, i don't dump money into my car. i enjoy my car, but i have my priorities straight. i'm getting a good education so i can get a good job, THEN i can spend money on toys. and for now i'm just having fun.

what do you know about my car anyway, besides that i have a hole in my resonator, and that i got drunk one night and thought it would be funny to patch the hole up with beer cans? i had a good laugh with my friends. that's not wasted time.

and what do you mean i should have crashed? why are you letting what i did as a joke bother you so much? don't take life so seriously.

haha, it didn't fly off because i'm an idiot. it flew off because it was a "red neck quick fixer upper." i fully expected it to NOT work. i was surprised it lasted as long as it did. i said more than once in this thread that i didn't expect much out of this "quick fix."

as for time-wasting... that's just like...your opinion man..(big labowski). haha, i say drinking beer and having a laugh with my friends on a saturday night is never a waste of time unless there are more important things to be done. in this case there weren't any more important things to be done at the time. i finished up midterms last week and i felt like cutting up a little bit. i'm sure in 5 years i'll remember doing this and think "man those were good times." in my opinion, that's not a waste of time. and if it was a waste of time, then it was time well wasted.

it would've been a laugh if you just posted the picture and said "beer can - the ultimate bullshit fix"

but you didnt. instead, you did this partial joke and then blew it off of your car doing 100+ mph on public roads.

i dont care how fast you drive, honestly. i mean, we all do stupid shit.

ehh, i think we're both confusing each other's tones. i'm not taking it seriously at all. i wasn't offended at all by your post. i understand you wouldn't have done it. i actually think the whole reason this was funny is because most people wouldn't have done this. it can definitely be looked at as a waste of time to do something that you know isn't going to work.

my main goal here was to have fun. i had fun. mission accomplished. i posted it on zilvia because i thought it would be good for a laugh. that's why i added the little disclaimer at the bottom of the first post.. so overcritical people wouldn't tell me how dumb they think i am for doing this. if i had done this thinking "man this is gonna be awesome. i'm so smart for thinking of this. why would anyone go to a muffler shop for exhaust repairs??" then yes, i would be pretty stupid.

also, i really don't think it's stupid to do 100mph on a road that doesn't have houses or people for miles, only open pastures. i'm not saying i don't do stupid stuff.. i just don't think this was stupid. personal opinion. we all have them.

i'm not trying to criticize your judgment and i know you're not trying to criticize mine. i just wanted to clear up that i wasn't reacting negatively towards your comments. i was just trying to explain anything that may have been unclear to you.

anyway, i love that the majority of you guys enjoyed this and got a good laugh out of it. i'm sorry for those who were frustrated by it and felt the need to let me know. i'm only 21 so i'm not the most mature person, especially after having a few beers, but i had fun with this. for me that means i accomplished my mission. sorry to those of you who were annoyed by this. and thanks to everyone who enjoyed it and gave me the +rep!
