Hey guys, I'm gonna be looking at a 1990 240 this weekend, and i want yout input on wheter or not its a good deal.
The mods are:
- new kyb shocks
- 4 new speakers (dunno what brand)
- alpine head unit

Engine wise, the car has 180k miles on it, but the engine had a complete overhaul with 45k on the clock.  The interior is clean, the car itself is clean.  I havent checked under the car or drove it yet, but everything else seems fine.  The rest of the car is stock. Has recipts for pretty much everything.  The price is $3500...should i take it or pass it up assumin the test drive goes well?  Thanks for the input.

That's a lot more than I would pay... the KYB's are prolly GR2's (I think that's right for the econo KYB line)  180k? that's A LOT... even if there IS only 45k on teh rebuild... rebuilt engines make me nervous when getting a used car, you have no idea who did the work, and if they're reputable or not.

Some might say this is okay, but there are better deals to be found out there, you just have to be willing to put in the time.

I agree w/ Yoshi that 3,500 is definately high. I'd be looking in the 2,500 range for that kind of car (zenki RPS13). Remember, "mods" do nothing by decrease the resale value of a car, and are, in most cases, just more reason for me to look elsewhere for a car. That said, shocks speakers and a HU aren't exactly a lot of mods. (Not like he had an OBX muffler and cut springs on 20" rims) -- Does the seller look like he drove it hard?

I'm more nervous that this thing needed a rebuilt at 135K!  There are a lot of 240s that go more than that and need virtually nothing.  The engine must have seen abuse or neglect at some point - you can guess the rest of the car did as well.  And at that price?

I'd walk.

there's no way that thing's worth 3500.

1) for that kinda money, you could get a 91+, which has the DOHC motor.
2) if you're looking to swap, many cheaper examples can be found
3) those mods aren't really mods. they don't add any value to the car, and don't let him tell you any different. dealerships actually drop the trade in value for modified cars, so there's no reason you should add value.
4) rebuilt engine?? pppshhh........who did it and to what specs? why would you rebuild when you could probably toss in a DOHC for the same.

i'd say tell this guy to piss off.

Dealerships drop trade in values for modified cars because dealers sell to the general public.  If I sold my GTI on the vwvortex I could sell it for a good chunk more than a stock GTI, because it's worth it to people there.  Besides that, new shocks and a decent stereo would add value for a dealer.

Anyway, I could see $2000 for that car or so.. not $3500.

Thanks for the info guys....just to clarify, that I've known the guy for quite awhile.  A man in his 40's was the owner for 95% of the car's life, used only to go to work.  Recently, he has given it to his 17 year-old son who has always taken care of it.  He never abused it and rarely drove it to redline.  They have a family owned auto shop, which is why they swapped the engine a few years ago.  It just passed smog too.  I will consider everything u guys have mentioned...thanks again
