View Full Version : Running FMIC without turbo

Hey everybody I have a spare intercooler and, was wondering if I run a pipe from the throttle to intercooler and, a pipe on the other end of the intercooler running a pipe with a filter at the end. You guys think it would work? Running the MAF, and all vacuum hoses of course.

So throttle response sucks afterwards? Reason I ask is I want to go turbo in the near future after I'm done with suspension. I thought it might have been a good idea... =-[ Guess I was wrong though. Thanks though. One more question though. Does it matter if I go with this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-Nissan-240-sx-240sx-S13-cold-air-intake-system-JDM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQihZ010QQitem Z200161466901QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Right now the best thing to do is get a feel for your car. Then start thinking about more power. Always always saftey 1st. The first 2 things I did to my car was 30mm z calipers and suspension.
Turtle
10-12-2007, 02:52 AM
I'm going with aftermarket pads and ss lines with the best money can get brake fluid. Right now I'm not really worried with power, all I really want right now is a good MPG car with reliability since my dad will be taking it to work once I'm done changing the transmission from auto to manual. My dad works aprox. 80 miles from our house and he has to go 80 miles down the hill and 80 miles uphill...

umm......... in that case leave it auto. especially with fall/winter coming your dad is gonna be hurting when stop and go traffic thru the pass. since the 210 opened its less traffic but yah. hold off until spring time with the mods.
if anything
-axxis pads
-valvoline brake fluid. big silver bottle (its equal to some of the better race-oriented brake fluid and a fraction of the cost)
-stainless lines is definately in order. if you can, have someone check the thickness of your rotors. if they are still good. see about getting them resurfaced.
you will have top notch braking setup.
As far as the intercooler idea. Don't use it until you have all the turbo parts, and you are going to install all of it.

10-12-2007, 04:59 AM
hey, stupid question but you gotta learn somewhere... as everyone else said safety is key, your 15, you dont wanna end up like nick hogan do you??? make sure your brakes are in line and i'd suggest taking some driving/racing courses if thats what interests you, after that i'd suggest suspension. add power later when you're familiar with the car and the way it handles.
Turtle
10-12-2007, 11:54 AM
Yes, I am really interested into racing, drifting actually, and time trials. I do practice, my bro some friends and, I go to El Mirage the dry lake bed atleast once a month. Not as much tire to ground friction as on pavement, but its practice nonetheless... Also, does anyone have an answer to my ebay link question?

If you are going turbo in the near future as you plan dont bother with either. You will be removing it soon causing your money to be wasted. Focus on your suspension like you planned and when the time comes do your power mods at the same time. Good luck, have fun.
Oh yeah don't let pops make you do all the work and then steal your car. lol.
Turtle
10-12-2007, 01:05 PM
Not only am I doing all the work but, paying for the whole thing too. Also kind of hard to move up when you get payed like 30$ a week, which avg's to like 120$ a month... 1,440$ a year... Just enough for a decent pair of coil overs. So right now I'm with those slip on coil overs and tokico blues, tension rods and, strut bars. All for 50$ I think it was worth it.

Here's some free advice... It was given to me forever ago and I never listened. Instead I dumped endless ammounts of money into it just cause I could.
Leave the motor stock. Focus on driving the car and learning how to drive.
You don't need the most expensive brake fluid ever. Hell, half the time the best stuff is the cheapest.
Get some good tires, good brake pads, some decent suspension and a diff and you'll have all the fun in the world at an autocross.

goals for a 15 year old driver and a 240...
suspension
wheels & tires
good brakes
maintain stock motor(especially in cali)
keep car clean or fix up damage... and try not to get pulled over for racing or get into an accident.
after you start to make at least $17.50 an hour or more is when you can start thinking about turbo.... should be 21 by then.
if you really want to do something that will benifit you a lot, save up for a driving school... should help you out with that need for speed along with improve your driving skills.
and yeah.. doing it right costs a bit of time and money but is always worth it.

Wow I hope all of you guys are proud of yourselves for picking on a 15 yr old. I'm guessing half of you get a woody from picking on little kids, but would run like a bitch if someone your age and size talked shit to you.
It's a very stupid question, but hey you have to start somewhere. Like already said, before you start posting questions read and then read again. Most of your questions will be answered as you search from thread to thread. A lot of questions you have, someone else already asked and got answers to (or flamed really bad.)
Don't waste your money on a FMIC right now. Like already said, get your suspension, tires, tie rods, brakes, bushings, sway bars, etc built up and replaced first. If you are doing it on your own with your own money then take your time. Don't try to cut corners or buy cheap things just because you are low on money, wait and save.
On that note, DO NOT buy cheap knock off crap on Ebay, like that first intake you posted. Most knock off stuff on ebay do not fit and are not properly made. If the second one is really AEM go for that one. Only problem is that you don't know if it is real, or if someone made it in their garage and just slapped on a fake AEM sticker. Be very careful what you buy on Ebay, you can find some deals but most are scams.

I messed with him a bit then felt bad after someone brought up his age(I didn't even notice:bash: ) then got to business. WTF some of you keep going and going. I wish I had got into cars at that age. My little brother knows nothing but skateboarding(16yr). One day I was pointing to random things under the hood of my car and he couldn't tell me what ANYTHING was with out a hint. If there is another attack on this kid I will hope to god that satan himself rips your nuts off through your mouth with his fiery fist and you bleed out.

You have good goals man dont change the suspension and brake upgrade ideas.
Your 15 so you probably just got, or dont even have your license yet so keep practicing. Have your dad or uncle or someone teach you the basics about cars first and then let you practice them while they supervise. Also pick up a few books including a manual on your car that shows you everything and read it.
You have come to a good site for help though. Ignore the people who hate on you because your 15 and want to learn. The same people who hate on you have asked stupid questions, hell maybe some even stupider. The idea is to take the bad, stupid stuff they tell you and throw it out. Its common to get made fun of or joked at about some stuff you say it happens to everybody but there are also people that give informative answers at the same time.
A lot of times car knowledge is just simply common sense. Research, search the internet, and get some hands on experience and you will succeed in your pursuit of car knowledge.
Good luck.

Not to sound like I'm a know it all but, I've been working on cars since I was 11, I got 2 280z's running by myself with my own hard earned money. I spent well over 600$ rebuilding the engine to OEM and sold the car for 300$ to me its not the money I get but, the time I spend on doing that. I always want something to do, I don't mind doing something for free if its something I like, its the experience I gain and new things I learn as I go by fixing it. The reason I asked this is because I learned by fixing things to OEM, not aftermarket. So, I'm not so knowledgeable about these things. I am however getting interest onto building things aftermarket since theres more things to learn, than building things how they came.

Well, everyone has to start somewhere. If you learned something from all this then at least the negative comments were worth it. Use the search function liberally. There is a lot of great information on here. However, if you want to ask these kind of questions in a more "sheltered" environment check out the beginner's section on www.240sxforums.com
"No flaming allowed" :D
Anyways, I say make sure the car is running at factory specs, get a feel for how it drives stock then start with the suspension and brakes. Good luck.

I call a bluff! But thats just me. If you kno anything about building or rebuilding a motor, you wouldnt be asking the questions that you do. Why on earth would you want to run a FMIC without a turbo unless you want to be a poser. Im not hating on you or anything, just had to call you out since acting like you have something to prove will get you no where. If the 240 is your first car say it. Its better for us to assume you know nothing and help rather than to hear you say i built a 600hp car and kno nothing.
So first on your list would be to just search the forums. Get acquainted with your car before you try upgrading.
