The head gasket is between the head and the cylinder block. If you change it yourself it would be a lot cheaper. However the fact that it blew a head gasket should be something to think about....

it's not for the weak at heart, if your not confident, don't d0 it yourself, spend the money and pay a shop to do it. there are many ah many things to take off, fuel injectors, fuel rails, intake/exhaust manifold, distributor, egr valve, taking it apart is one thing, putting it back together is a whole other thing. though if your getting the car for dirt cheap buy it. i had a friend help me do my heads, i have a whole lot of extra nuts and bolts, though the car runs good and pulls hard, still there are a whole lot of extra nuts and bolts, i am still waiting for the other shoe to drop and waiting.......
head jobs prices vary i was quoted $1200 to $2800. how do you know it's just the heads? maybe the block might be cracked as well. good luck on your endeavors.
