Okay here's the deal. I bought a 91 SE hatch two weekends ago, and I have been slowly cleaning it up. Today I took out the cracked dash, antenna cable and antenna and put an un cracked dash, small rubber antenna and a universal motorola antenna cable in. I also replaced the broken air conditioner/heater control box for a cleaner unbroken one. I put everything back together and go to start the car....cars dead. I notice somehow the lights were turned on, so I made sure everything was off and jumped the car. Also I recently installed a brand new alpine deck about 5 days ago.
1st problem- When I turned on the a/c or heater it stayed on the defroster setting no matter what option I chose, i.e. floor, vent, both etc. I noticed there is a squealing noise somewhere behind the dash. I tried again later and got the vent to work, but when I put it on defroster it wouldn't move from there again. Is this an electrical issue? what would control the box to change from one option to another? The original control box in the car you couldn't change it from hot to cold (that's why I swapped it out), but you could change it from floor, vent etc. Do I need to find another control box, or is it something under the dash that connects to the box that could be worn out/broken? Also when I first hooked up the box and the dash was still off I tested it, and it went from vent to floor to defroster etc with no problem.
2nd problem-When I started the car the stereo wouldn't turn on and the clock on the gauge cluster was lit up but no numbers. I know the clock and radio worked because they were both working before I swapped out the dashes. I pulled the radio back out and noticed the harness had came unplugged from the head unit, so I plugged it back in........still nothing. I thought it was really odd that both the stereo and the clock didn't work, could the problem be related? I've swapped out many dashes etc on my cars and other peoples cars, but have never had the clock not work after swapping. If any one has any ideas please let me know. Also the ground on the stereo is good, and all the wires are connected properly.
