maybe its the rear tranny seal, it will whip oil all over the place when it leaks and throw some on the exhaust and when it gets hot enough it will start to smoke usually u can tell from the outside but i had the same symptons u did and when i finally went under the car its what was the tranny seal. takes like thirty mins to change that seal.

at the very end, where the output shaft is...where the drive shaft slides into the transmission. if u see oil on the bottom of the floor pan or discoloration around that area on your exhaust thats usually a pretty good sign, or just put your car up on jack stands and run it through the gears for a few mins and have some one check for leaks.just dont have someone under the car when your going through the gears just have them check for smoke or oil leaks on the side. or go under the car after its off

Dudes.. Even if his rear tranny seal was blown, it won't smoke. That part is submerged in oil. Your lower boot is cracked somewhere, causing smoke. Replace it. And while you are at it, replace the gasket for the shift plate.

Really? So there is always smoke but the seal is letting it through?
It's more like tranny fluid vapor. In my car, it smells sort of like natural gas.
A friend's 240 had the same thing. I thought it was just "240" smell.
Pull off the shifter console & examine the boot. If that's not ripped. take THAT boot off and examine the inner one.
IIRC there are two shifter boots.
