View Full Version : Harness bars?

What does everyone use to mount their harnesses if you don't have a roll bar/cage?
I've seen people weld end tabs to a steel tube and mount it between the two rear upper seatbelt mounts...
What about using the rear strut brace? :Ownedd: I don't see how that would be any different than a harness bar.
I'm just thinking of ideas without having to put in a cage. Hopefully something that will keep me as safe as possible, so no big angles on the upper belts.
Anyone have ideas/photos for an S14?

most people mount it towards the rear seatbelt locations. Theres a certain angle you need to keep the belt so as not to compress your spine in an accident. I wouldn't use a harness on the street and/or without a roll cage. If your car flips and your stuck in your seat you cant lean and your head will act as roll point. Stock seatbelts allow your body to move enough in accidents and roll overs. Plus you cannot reach your radio if your harnesses are properly used. theres a lot of topics on this
in short* harness on street not needed and you shouldnt be driving hard enough to need it
*harness without roll cage=no
if you must

Thanks for the info above. The harness is not for the street, obviously. I'm leaving the regular seat belt in for that. I'm looking for more body support for drifting, etc.
A roll bar might have to be my answer, but I really don't want to mess with it. I don't daily drive the car, but I don't track it enough to justify carrying around the extra weight all the time. I drive the car about 3 times a month.. once at the track and once or twice on the streets for a fun drive.
Anyone else have harness bar info? Pics would be great.

Don't pay for a Harness Bar.
Don't use the strutbar, its not wide enough.
That mounting angle stuff is for older cars, as long as you have a racing shell the harness holes on it will just become the pivot points so that the angle doesn't matter.
If you're on a stock seat it might be a problem, but harness with stock seat is a bad buy.

unless you are a midget your shoulders are going to be taller than the harness holes in your seat and your spine will compress. If you are going to get a harness get a bar to go with it. No use cutting corners on safety stuff ;)
I seen one use the rear strut bar

Hmm. I've never heard anyone use that seat argument for the belt angles before. Good point.
I am going to be using a fiberglass bucket, but the belt holes are a bit short for me, so I think I'll still stick to the "20 degree from horizontal" rule.
Looks like I need to steal some steel tube from work and go to town with a welder.
Thanks for your opinions, everyone.
