Everything in the engine bay and under the car has been stripped down rebuilt and painted. (including every bolt)
There has been more work done to the car than the pictures show. My bro took his camera with him when he left, so i have no camera.
I hope yall like it. I'm sure somebody on here is going to find something to complain about, but owell i like the car. its mine, its not urs, i dont really care what you think about it.
and just so everybody knows.. this is going to be a TRACK SLUT!!! yea i know i've done all this work just to beat the shit out of it. but owell thats what they are for.

Everyone knows that I'm a picky bastard.
But this car, I must say, that I like. I could change some things, but its definately on the right track.
Ditch the pignose and well, too late now but...
forced induction for sure. The current setup will end up being a fun NA tune. Cant wait to see what you do with wheels/tires/brakes and all the rest.

Nice work. Very original on the control arms. I just home those joints are rated for that load level.
90KAcoupe
10-06-2007, 03:21 PM
^^ yea they are. i dont know the weight rating off hand but that was onething i took into consideration when i picked the size i needed. these are mainly used for custom drag suspensions and rock crawlers. so i think they can handle a little 240.
.... lol i guess i should try proof reading before i hit enter.. lol owell i mean "short blOck"

Nice stitch welding! It's a bitch huh? I stitch welded my entire front end and I fuckin hated every minute of the prep work, the welding itself was not that bad though. Serious props for the custom work man most of the experienced 240 enthusiasts piss their pants at the thought of all that welding. You should re-route the chasis harness over the strut tower instead of leaving it in the fenderwell though. It's not that hard you just have to be careful not to break the clips that hold it down. Also you have to completely dissassemble both fuseboxes so be sure to mark the position of everything if u do it.

10-06-2007, 11:56 PM
well im pretty frustrated right now.....
i got the short block almost completely assybled untill i started to torque down the last rod cap.
after i torqued it down i noticed a really big difference in the ability to spin the crank.
So i untorqued them and it would spin easier..
So i pulled the rod caps off and measured the bearing to see wat was going on...
and the rod bearing are to big by .03mm causing there not to be a clearance between the rod and crank...
so now i have to go down to orileys auto parts (luckly the warehouse isnt far) and go through all the bearing they have and find the ones that match the spec of the FSM.
To sum it up for the tired / mentally retarted. Federal Mougle (sp?) didnt watch there geometric tolerances close enough and they are produceing bearing that are bigger then the FSM specification and cause the clearances to not be there. (which will eventually = slung rod)

90KAcoupe
10-07-2007, 07:13 PM
^^ yea the pignose will stay. I'm feeling an old school build.. silvia side skirts and flares (painted metallic dark hunter green (old aston martin color) . with some nice gold mesh wheels...
but i got the bearing problem takin care of... the short block is together... now i need to get a 91 exhuast cam. and some valve stem seals and i can assymble the head.

10-14-2007, 11:10 PM
ok i've got a little update.... after looking at the head a little more i noticed the valves aren't seating right. we are guessing the machine shop put the valve guides in before they did the 3 angle valve job (which would throw the valve seats off a little) i called them, they said to bring it down and they will fix it for free. it just aggravates me that it will hold me back a touch more.
I have a friend with a s14 that we have done basically the same thing as we did to my car to his and he just totaled it :( . and i might be working something out with him about trading the lower ends off the 2 ka's. his is a 10.5:1 compression engine. so I'm gonna try to get the lower end out of it for mine. but I'm not sure yet.

I'm wanting to get it running and broke in my Nov 17th for a gymkhana event. but thats not looking to good right now. But i will make SURE it is done before the Nov 24th drift event!!!!!!:2f2f:

I can't wait until I can start on my coupe.
But I don't want to even take it off the road until I have all the parts I want, that way I can take my time, and also not have to worry about waiting for certain parts to come in and stuff.
Your car is looking crazy clean, and looks like you also started out with a really clean chassis. Can't wait to see how this thing turns out!

well i got the head back and assymbled the valves and springs, and we put the cams in and all my lifter cup shims are way out (due to 3angle valve job) .... so i'm probably gonna have to order a bunch of those. they are $10 a peice and if i end up having to order all 16 thats $160... which effin sucks!!!! its always something......
90KAcoupe
11-03-2007, 10:47 PM
ok well i had an extra head and i pulled the valves out and got them ground. so i didnt have to buy new shims... the machine shop i used is really cool, so they did it for free. and i ended up a free valve grinding machine, so i could grind the tips off like i needed.
I got all of that finished today. and i assymbled my head, everything is in spec now, the head is finally bolted on the block. and im going to order a 4-2-1 header really soon (like next couple days.)
so do u want pics??? well sorry ur going to have to wait till tomorrow... im to tired to post them up... im sure none of yall really care that much... but i'll post them up after church.

I honestly would't worry about that it won't lower the compression that much where you will notice it. but to each their own. if perfection is what you seek then go for it.
P.S. if u plan to turbo it keep that HG , however if ure gonna be an N/A monster then get some single slammer pistons, and notch them to clear valves then go for the high compression

^^ lol i'm using my camera phone.... i know it sucks... but i dont have a good camera and one of my friends has one with pictures of my car on it.. he just never remembers to upload the pictures.
but i am getting a new head gasket... i went ahead and got it cause i've done a bunch of porting and polishing on the intake and head to achieve the most hp as possible... so lowering compression with a head gasket would just make me feel like i did all that for nothing. and it will just make me feel better.
but there were a couple of my friends that were super redneck trying to tell me that my car is gonna be slow cause its a 4cyl and how they can beat me in there v6 f-150's (stock). its kinda funny. i'll just take them for a ride in it down a good back road.. or give them a ride at autox and they will probably change there mind... lol (i don't think my car is gonna be a super fast car, but i think i will have plenty of power to have fun)

^^ this picture is setting up our tool to do line boreing on the cam cap journals.. they were warped causing the cam to not turn freely...
this seems to be pretty common on ka's, out of the 3 ka heads i have helped build... all three of them were warped causing the cams to not spin freely. so this is something i would recommend checking. this could cause a broken cam, and HP loss.

well for right now im going with a basic n/a build.. stock compression nothing real fancy.. but i do plan on pulling this engine back out later down the road and building a turbo motor. i would like to get the money to get good rods/pistons/ brian crower's 2.4l fullycounter weighted crank( not advertised on the site but he does make one) before i go turbo... i've always throught do it right the first time so u dont have to tear back into it to do something else.

I wish I was knew how to do all of this when I was 16. One thing though I'm confused with and if you don't mind answering...is it a machine shop or paint shop you work at. I see you painted the car but you are also assembling everything in what looks to be the same place. Good choice in color too btw. Oh yeah what did you do to get the inside of the manifold so smooth.
Sorry if you already answered, but is your friend gonna swap bottom ends with you?

^^ well actually i haven't painted my car. its the original paint. the paint was a little faded when i bought the car and a buffer and a little elbow grease and she cleaned up really nice. i had a friend of mine believing a re painted it. but im doing all the work out of my basement... i have a pretty nice setup for working on cars. and the side that my car is sitting in can be made into a paint booth just by rolling down some plastic that i have rolled up.
i ended up not swaping the lower end with my friend. i cant really afford the other things i need to see full benefit of the high compression pistons. and i plan on going turbo later so h/c+turbo=fail...lol

my cometic head gasket leaked for like a day. i was told it was because there is cork in between the metal. if it sits for too long in a warehouse or something the cork wont seal until liquid hits it and it expands again.

Cleans engine bay and keeps the engine itself cleaner - not as much carbon build up everywhere. :bigok: I even noticed the throttle to be more responsive - of course I did alot of others things which could have contributed to that so...

actually no. none of it was.. its all been beedblaster and painted.. its all been painted with either wheel paint (which is really strong) or laquer paint.. so it all sticks really wheel and doesn't chip off. i tried using something on a couple of the bolts and it chipped off but i only used it on a couple of bolts. the rest of the bolts the paint stuck fine.. and didnt chip when u tightened them up
haha nice. i used silver engine enamel and the clear enamel then baked it in the oven. came out really strong, very similar to powder coat.

$283bajillion .. i honestly dont know. i dont plan on selling it. I've done so much work to it, it would be hard to get the actual value out of it. I would probably trade it if the right trade was offered.. something like a really clean E36 325I or a nice ae86 coupe.. and possibly a RX3 or 240z.

Very nice looking, your car reminds me of an S13 version of my project, only you didn't start with a shitbox.
One thing though, You should try rerouting the brake lines around the bottom of the engine bay, like right over the tranny tunnel.
It makes the bay look 100x cleaner imho and is free.
You pretty lucky to have a dad who gives you a hand with stuff like this, you're building a cleaner car than I've seen some shops build as demo cars even if your parts aren't as flossy.

but i did so i'm happy. when i get bored i can clean the fuck out of my car and it will be clean. once u get something clean its easy to keep clean if u care about it.
im also thinking about picking up a beater for a DD and insuring this car with the "sunday driver modified car" insurance so if some dumb ass person hits me i dont loose everything.

I guess its for the same purpose as exhaust wrapping but I don't konw that stuff.

its just regular fiberglass header wrap with the dei silcon based header wrap paint. its suppose to help keep the fiber glass from fraying.

OH SHIT !!!
This is getting really interesting !
Wondering how good/stockish can you make that look. (functionnal also obviously ...)
What car is that coming from ? What kind of numbers are you expecting from it ?
90KAcoupe
03-11-2008, 10:06 PM
its off of a 3.3L frontier.. im not looking for any high numbers.. i just want the torque. lol.
I've already got some ideas on how to pull this off. i've been doing my research. and everybody elses SC setups are , to keep this friendly, a shitty ass design.. lol
I'm probably gonna be making a custom intake. all i'll be using from the stock is the flange and the injector places, the rest will be cut off and i'll be welding up a box to mount it on.
for the belt.. i plan on searching around and finding a pull that i can mod to fit the front of my crank pull and use a complete different pully setup. instead of eliminating an accessory.
and with a megasquirt ECM to top this off i'll be tuning it so i can run E85 when i want.. just like a flex fuel.
yota man
03-11-2008, 10:14 PM
I'm talking totally form hear say so don't quote me on this but, I was under the impression that E85 will eat up your fuel lines and tank after a while if they weren't designed to run it.
90KAcoupe
03-11-2008, 10:17 PM
with our fuel lines we will be fine... that was based torwards older (early 80's and back) cars. but it really isnt a big deal. i've talked to a couple people about it, they said not to worry about it.

I would have probably suggested shorter runners on the intake mani but that would probably require a lot more fab work than what's already done. Plus, that would probably give some fitment issues too.
Unique though. I remember a few years ago when they said a de could not be sc'ed.
why ka24de R?
should it be ka24de sc?
your build is nice tho.
90KAcoupe
03-11-2008, 11:16 PM

here is an update since i havent updated it in a while..
well i got it running and we had some problems with the coolant. turns out it was getting compression form the cylinder in the coolant.. which meant 1 of 2 things..
1. head or block is cracked
2. headgasket problems
so we tore back into it and found that since our head and block had been shaved to min, 2 of the head bolts had been bottomed out and stretched the threads. this made it so the head wasnt pulled down as tight as it needed to be. so im getting head bolts and a headgasket tomorrow and the head is going back on.:naughty:
i was just hopeing for autox sunday.. but because of this i will just be spectating again...

i guess i need to update this a little with some good pics and a story from a drift event..
Well i had my 1st drift event on the car may 3rd.. it was the SEDA La Cucaracha Dreft in Greenville SC. the event went amazing other then the parking lot being a tire killer.
but during my 1st run group i kept understeering or spinning out.. but by my 2nd run group i was chaining the whole course consistantly.. which qualified me for TANDEM!!!! yea 1st drift event and running tandem i felt like that was a major accomplishment. here are some pics from the event.. it was super fun. but there arent any good pictures from tandem.. my friend with the camera started riding with me during tandem..
