I took the S13 out to Buttonwillow Raceway again last friday with Speed Ventures...

http://www.speedventures.com/

This was my second time here with my best time from last event being 2:22 ... Configuration of the course for both events was 13 Clockwise which is the time attack config...

Mods on the car are:

Stock Rebuilt KA24DE (OEM rebuild)
eBay intake
Buddy Club 80mm Spec 2 exhaust
KTS coilovers
17x9 +20 5Zigen FN01RC all around
245-40-17 Bridgestone RE01-R tires all around
Energy Suspension master bushing set
SPL solid subframe bushings
Hawk Blue brake pads
VLSD

Alignment settings are:

-2.5* camber front and rear
0 toe front
1/8" toe in rear
stock caster
damping set at 6 front, 5 rear... from soft... 15 way adjustable...

Weight of the car came out to 2420 lb. with 3/4 tank of gas...
I haven't dyno'd the car yet with this engine but I'd guess about 140WHP...

Impressions:

The S13 ran great... The driver needs more seat time...
I only ended up running 1 complete session and 2 incomplete ones...
The first one I ran I pulled off because I got spooked after watching an accident... The last session that was incomplete was because the flywheel bolts backed out again...

But during the second session, I ran a 2:18, which is an improvement of 4 seconds over last time... And I wasn't pushing the car at all, just looking for the best lines... Here are some notes from the laps:

1. The car doesn't feel underpowered at all... Only one car (E46 M3) did I have to let pass me but everyone else (majority of who had 100 more HP than me) was not a problem...
2. I still haven't found the limit of stock brakes with race pads... I keep pushing them harder and harder and they take the abuse... It's pretty impressive and scary at the same time... I hope they don't fail me!...
3. 95% of the course is in 3rd and 4th gear
4. The stock S13 seat sucks at the track... I keep having to fight to hold myself up...
5. I could feel the car understeering during the downhill turns which I want to see if I can get rid of...

Here is a turn by turn on the course:

http://www.buttonwillowraceway.com/images/race_13_config.gif

1. Enter "Sunrise" in 3rd gear...
2. Go tight up "Off ramp" on the right and full throttle in 2nd gear very early... No one could catch me here...
3. Enter "Cotton Corners" at the bottom of 3rd... I still need to find the best line here... Exiting "Cotton Corners" I have to stay as far left as possible because I feel oversteer as I go downhill to the right...
4. Let off at "Club Corner" and then full throttle, end up in 4th gear... I need to stop letting off at "Club Corner" and see if I can get away with just a tap...
5. Stay right going into "Bus Stop" and then cut left without hitting the berm... This is taken in 3rd gear... I want to try not going so far right and hitting the berm all in 4th gear... I saw my S2000 friends do it...
6. "Truck Stop" to "Riverside" as fast as possible... 4th gear cruising... I just need to keep getting faster here...
7. Up "Lost Hill" on the left and brake hard where the white/red lines start... Aim for the cone at the top of "Lost Hill" and power out at the top in 3rd gear... I've seen others go full throttle through this area...
8. Full throttle through "Drag Strip"
9. Enter the "Sweeper" in the middle and slowly drift to the outside... Then cut in at the end to enter the "Esses" more straight...
10. Exit the "Esses" in 4th gear and full throttle out...
11. Take "Sunset" wide while downshifting to 2nd... This is another place where I should be able to just tap the brakes and give it gas...

There are definitely some areas that I know I can improve and I just need to spend more time in the car at the track... My current best time is 2:18 but I view the times for this config like this:

2:30 - Decent beginner or stock car (I consider stock car as a $30K new-ish sports car... ex. S2000, 350Z, RX8, used M3)
2:20 - Stock or mildly modified car with a more practiced driver
2:15 - Good driver with a stock car
2:10 - Getting into modified car territory now and the limit of street tires
2:05 - Pretty fast and you probably have a dozen events that you have gone to... The car probably has R comp tires and some significant mods
2:00 - About as fast as it gets for street cars on non-corporate budgets
Under 2:00 - Congrats!
1:48 - Record held by JIC S15

My goal was to hit 2:15 but I just didn't have enough track time...

Here are my friends cars... Their mods... and what they ran...

Daryl's S2000

- KW Variant 3 suspension
- Nitto NT01 255-40-17 R Comp tires all around
- Custom exhaust
- Stock engine
- Voltex wing

2:08 (car ran 1:59 with Rob driving it... Daryl's best time is 2:06 last event)

So as you can see these S2000 guys are pretty quick... Outside of our area were people running in the 2:20-2:30 range... There were no S13s or S14s there other than me...

Here are a couple more pics...

Lined up and waiting to go...

http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%20092807/2DSC01429.JPG

My little area...

http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%20092807/2DSC01412.JPG

UHaul trailers are the best... seriously...

Low ramps so no need for blocks and straps are attached to the trailer and easy to strap up... Literally only takes 2 minutes to load the car...

Cost was $54 for 24 hours

http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%20092807/2DSC01422.JPG

And there was a group of Radicals there... Those things defy physics out there...

http://nitinj.com/Images/240SX2/Buttonwillow%20092807/2DSC01424.JPG

I've got some videos that I'll link up here soon...

And if you haven't taken your car to the track yet, do it!... It's a lot of fun!...

OMG. I was crying I was laughing so hard. Why did you have to post the pictures to where all the nice cars that are expensive are in garages first and the cheaper s13 is outside all alone kinda like no one cares about it. LOL

Oh man I love this track. My fastest time in that configuration was a 2:13 with a relatively stock STI (245/40/17 RE01-R and race pads). I want to see what my 240 can do now.

I also saw that Tim finally broke into the 1:5X times. Congrats to him.

all stock

hey, i was out there on sunday, when they had the radical race. only the viper comp coupe was playing out there with them in advanced group.

any plans to cage it and perhaps w2w compete?

its funny but the cheap stock engine s13 is as fast as those crappy s2000s' god I hate s2000s, I think EK9s are faster in principle haha

maybe its the stock motors, maybe after 10k into the k24 its awesome.

I drove a stock one and it felt like a KA with no torque and a higher redline.

im like "wheres the power?"

are you fucking kidding.

If the 350Z power plant was in an s2000, I would own one.

I randomly found a video of Daryl being chased and passed by a Radical...
His car is the first car that comes up... Black S2000....

And for those who haven't been to the track... This is how fast it feels... and is!...

Definitely going to cage it up as soon as possible...

And yeah I'd like to try w2w but probably with another chassis... This chassis is just going to be an experiment in track car building and then I'd like to dedicate and build a chassis for a class...

I would like to try time attack next year... I'm thinking it will take about a year to learn the car and become a decent driver...

So Rob shaved off 7 seconds in the same S2000? That's pretty ridiculous.

I can't wait to take my car to the track next year. I know, next year, sucks.

Garages cost $150 to rent and really not that necessary unless you need power or a level ground to work on...

A couple of the S2000s are running G2X GPS software and were analyzing their data between runs...

My little area was initially for taking a nap but that is impossible right next to a straightaway!...

Yeahh, I suck LOL! Tim actually ran 1:58.9 and Evasive's Evo IX ran 1:55.6. Rob did 1:59.4 in his personal car and 1:59.8 in my car. I was actually quicker with my non-staggered setup (2:06.3). I believe all the times above had passengers in them too.
Nov. 4th should be on par as I finally got the suspension "more" dialed in but my suspension is really limiting me to what I could do with consistancy. One mess up and loose a lot of time. I'm not much in a rush to upgrade my suspension as my driving needs practice as well.

2 minutes is very fast... That's my goal for next year...

Right now I just want to hit 2:10...

I think it was JRho who said that racing is 60% driver, 30% tires, and 10% car... And there are a handful of guys who run amazing times with basic mods that prove it...

2420 lbs. without driver and with 3/4 tank of gas...

I pulled out the entire interior except wiring, stock front seatbelts, dashboard, center console, door panels, and the driver seat...
Other than that the car doesn't have A/C but everything else is just stock...

I'm going to pull off all the sound deadoning, change to bucket seats with harnesses in the near future and let you guys know what it comes out to...

In the next couple of months the car will get a cage and I'd like to reduce some of the weight on the front of the car with some carbon fiber body panels...

2340 lbs. is the weight of the car minus the gas right now... Assuming 10 gallons and that a gallon weighs 8 lbs. ...

Next event is Sunday, 11/4, with SpeedVentures...

My deal with Buttonwillow is that I only want to go to 13 Clockwise configuration events since that is what is used in Time Attack competition... There are only a handful (5ish) of events a year that are in that config so I want to get as much practice as possible...

Next year I'd like to compete in the street car class (street tires, stock fenders, unlimited engine) and need to shave 15 seconds off my current time... Here are the results from the last Redline Time Attack at Buttonwillow:

1. Tim - S2000 - 2:02 (running the identical tire setup I am)
2. Salah - 300ZX - 2:05
3. Manly - Elise - 2:06

The modified class is running about 10 seconds faster than street...

Cost of the event is $190 + $20 for timing... Don't go without timing...
I go the night before (2.5 hour drive from LA/OC area) and spend the night at a motel... Cost is between $30 and $60 and we split it up amongst us so it comes out cheap...
The next morning we have breakfast at 7AM and we at the track after that...

11/4 is the day... Let me know if you want to drive up together...

http://www.speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=152

Total cost of the event:

$190 - Event (lunch included)
$20 - Timing
$30 - Motel room
$50-100 - Gas to get there and back...
$30 - Gas while on the track (there is a gas station and tire changing shop at the track)
------------------
$320-$370 - Total... plus food ofcourse...
