Canada Introduces $10,000 Speeding Ticket
Ontario, Canada applies street racing penalties to motorists who are not racing anybody.

Premier Dalton McGuintyOntario, Canada Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced that being caught driving 50km/h (31 MPH) over the speed limit will automatically trigger "street racing" penalties -- even if the accused motorist is driving alone on an otherwise empty road. The change in definition will, in effect, turn ordinary speeding into an offense that can carry a $10,000 (US $9305) fine and up to six months in jail, making it one of the most expensive traffic tickets in North America.

"If you choose to break the law, we consider you a threat to our public safety and you're going to face stiff penalties," McGuinty said in a statement.

In June, McGuinty cited the importance of combating the "organized crime" of street racing as he urged passage of the Safer Roads for a Safer Ontario Act which created the $10,000 penalty. The change in definition also means that the word of a police officer is all that it takes to confiscate a car and driver's license for at least seven days.

"There is no appeal from, or right to be heard before, a vehicle detention, driver's license suspension or vehicle impoundment under [the street racing] subsection," the Safer Roads Act states.

McGuinty also announced a proposal to hire 55 new traffic police officers and purchase a high-tech surveillance airplane in an attempt to rack up several of the expensive new fines.

Gotta love the province of Ontario!

It's in the works. I have many people in the legal field in my family, and there is legislation (in it's infancy right now) to just blanket any modifications to a street vehicles engine, suspension, drivetrain etc. as illegal (technically it already is... but this will just make it more enforcable and punishable) All that will be allowed is cosmetic and in vehicle entertainment modifications. It's coming... sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but just give it a few years.

Damn.

I knew Canadians were weird.

Yes they are...

...many of them are entertaining as a result though. I know. I live among them. lol

Hopefully by then the 240 will be track duty only, and I'll have a stock car as a DD. If that does come true though, I'm going to have to ask myself what kind of shit they smoke up there.

Thats like saying you can't paint rooms in your house, or redo your flooring. I don't feel like elaborating but its complete and utter BS.

Mmm, I'm gonna have to start being more careful on my ventures through Canadaland. Can't take my Valentine One over the border either cause if the border patrol find it, it's sayonara. I'm not too worried about the going 31 over the speed limit deal, cause that's just uncalled for, but I heard there's something about getting your car crushed if the po-po's find anything illegal under the hood. NOW THAT...could be a problem.

I need an ultra beater I can bog down the streets of CA with, EH!

People have their reasons.....if its late at night, four lane highway, nicely light and not a car in sight...and the limit is 60...you can very easily do 90 without knowing (well in a 240 atleast).

I don't dissagree, who hasn't been on the road, going home late at night trying to make some time. But in reality, that's a situation where you will rarely encounter a cop, which is why you make the decision to speed up a bit.

I just think that this whole street racer thing is escalating to a whole new level of horseshittedness.

Yeah Ontario has a funny way of rusting the shit out of our cars.

This law doesn't really bother me. Although, I do feel it's a little unnecessay. But until they can impound our cars based on how our car looks or they suspect us of street racing. There's really nothing to worry about. Plus, if a cop start flaggin you down for doing 50km/hr+ over the speed limit, you're fucked so you might as well just try and out run the bastard, lol.

I would actually say NC is worse than that, or at least it has the potential to be. Say for example I show some kid in his civic what it feels to get beat by a Titan(you would not believe how many civics, celicas,V6 mustangs etc around here that think they are fast). And I get caught, my truck gets seized indefinitely and I get slapped w/ a fine/jail possibly. I owe more than 10,000 CDN on my truck.

Things like that make me depressed. Wasting all my money on my car makes me happy, I know it's dumb and maybe I'll grow out of it someday, but if they took that away right now, my life would completely suck and I'd have nothing to look forward to. People will lose interest in fun cars because owning one is turning into so much hassle, they'll rather just go to work and sit at home becoming a sheep to the government and its American way of life. Automakers will see the sales of sporty cars go down, and pretty soon the only models available in North America will be generic commuter Camry-types.

what? where in NC do you live? going to court usually drops WHATEVER fine you have by a minimum of 100 dollars. I've had room mates get 40 over tickets dropped to 20 over, driving school and a fine, regularly.

and "showing some kid in a civic" what your engine feels like doesnt mean you have to do 100mph on i85

I think outlawing performance modifications would have the opposite effect.
If I can't modify my car to do 0-60 in 5 seconds, I'd better be able to buy a factory stock new one that can do it in 4.5.

I saw a documentary on Ontario street racing and have not be able to find the video since.

The best part was the dumbass inspectors with there "modifications" book. Guy had a fuel cell in his trunk. "This is filled with Jet Fuel to make the car run faster." I mean WTF? Is the car a diesel? cause that's the only thing that will run on Jet A. No Gas car will. Then they bust a guy for having bottle clamps in the car. No NO2 bottle. Just the clamps in the trunk.

But hey, let's all move to Canada for the free health care....

Yeah but that's a car from the old glory days of classic muscle cars made by the same companies that are producing trash nowadays, trying to live off their name. New cars are made so blind 90-year olds can drive them, plus there's no fun in owning a car with visible wheel gap haha.
