View Full Version : Window Regulator - Faulty install or bad regulator?

I just had the power window regulator go bad on my 1990 240sx. The symptoms was a large bang when I was rolling the window down and then it finally never rolled back up. I can hear the motor going, so the switch and motor doesn't seem bad.

Now, I was able to get another used regulator assymb. and put it in. It does roll up, but sometimes it will all of a suddenly drop all the way back down. Other times it won't go up - I can hear the motor, but its not catching. If I fidget the switch a little, I can get it to go up and sometimes half way up it will come crashing down again.

Question is this - Did I end up getting another bad regulator or did I somehow install it incorrectly? The installation seemed pretty straight forward, but just making sure I didn't forget anything.

Thoughts?

Did you tighten the three machine screws to the motor? If not, the gears won't mesh right and it'll go right back down again.

I believe this would cause that symptom, but beyond that I'll have to check my FSM and get back to you. I left them pretty darn loose to ease installation.

Let me know, since I am the one who sold you this and if it's borked then I need to make things right.

Thanks for the tip. I wanted to make sure I didn't do something stupid while I was installing it. Those screws didn't seem to be loose, but I'll double to check it tommorow.

It is a very straightforward install, but as mentioned if the motor isn't flush with the drive gear it will bind and come loose. Your motor could also have a crack in the case and strip out under a load.

I was able to double check it again today - and you were right! I didn't noticed the loose screws by the motor since I didn't have to touch that area when I removed my old regulator.

Anyways, works nice and smooth again. Thanks!!
