I'm planning on ordering an SR20det pretty soon, however just read in the paper Grey Davis is passing new stricter street racing laws (I"m from CA btw). I called some shops asking about rebuilding engines and turbos and such. (originaly I was going to go witha ka24det) and when I told them this they freaked out and said something like:
"We don't do that kind of mods!" and told me to go elsewhere..

however the guy suggested importing a japanese engine. SO my question is this:.......
are the nissan machine shops and smog places in CA SR20det friendly? would they be like "oh sure, your'e one of thouse kinda guys" and help me out. So the level of legality of the SR20det is more like a law never enforced? (such as jaywalking, or making copys of videos, software, loitering, etc.)?

first of all, both of you do everyone a favor and click the "search" button at the top (middle).  There's TONS of SR20 info, most of which has been rehashed over and over and over and over and over.... and over... and if you think that was redundant, you're just hitting the tip of the iceberg on how redundant all these SR20 questions have been.

Basically it's like this.
technically SR20's are illegal anywhere as they are not DOT certified engines.  In california; they will pass smog if properly tuned but will NOT pass visual inspection.  If you have a hookup somewhere, good for you.  If not don't go gettin the engine first w/o huntin for somene beforehand.  Hope you know how to work on the engine yourself too cuz you'll find a lot of shops won't touch it (liability), beyond that, it's an engine most shops will have no experience with... do you really want to take it there anyway?

It's all about research.

i tried the search typing in "registering sr20det" and "smogging sr20det". i didn't find anything related to the subjects. thats why i asked. if anyone can recommend something better to search by that will give good results let me know. i am not afraid of a little reading.

if your going SR20det best thing to do is talk to the guys your buying it from a lot of them do the installs and a lot of them have smog hookups. Getting smog hookups is not hard there are a lot of smog mechanics here in California that will let a car go through if it tailpipes. Plus there are a number of shops here in socal that sell SR's and work on them if its needed. I do recommend you know something about tuning your engine yourself though if you are going to start playing with SR's its just wiser.

If you're worried about smog and wanna go turbo, save yourself a bunch of hassle and turbo the KA.

None of the current KA turbo kits are CARB legal so you have the same problem as the SR... you still fail the visual inspection.

Obviously not, but if you wanna keep your car on the streets and stay turbo it'll be a lot easier to unbolt the turbo then swap the motor..........

Not to be pessemistic, but when it comes to "GReedy", I'll believe it when I see it. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

umm yeah. I am sure they wouldnt like you posting their info bro! take that stuff down asap. I mean think about it... If they are "hooking you up" that not legal at all and that means big time fines.

so take the info down and just PM it to him.
