You're probably running rich from the loss of air after the MAFs from the atomspherical BOV

Does the backfire occur immediately after letting off the gas or does it take a while. Immediately would be what Koopa is describing. A bit later could be a leaky injector that is pissing fuel into your exhaust. It takes a while for enough to build up for it to ignite.
When I had the that problem I could get a M80 type backfire decelerating in any gear. Very usefull for tailgaters...not good for my exhaust though.

my friends s13 does that too all the time and its when he slows down in gear to around 1k rpms and then it backfires......im guessing its the bov slightly leaking on decel causing a slight rich condition throughout the slowdown then pop when too much fuel gets there

hey so this is funny...so each car is different.but for a sohc in my car at least. if you put it into second.doing about 30 miles an hour. around 3500 rpm..floor it for a second.then immediatly turn off the car all the way and start it extremely quick and youll shoot flames and a huge backfire.last night i shot a four foot flame.and it sounded like a shotgun.ha.you can do it in any gear.in flooring it from 3thousand to 3500rpm,turning off the car fast, and turning it back on shoots flames

Mine did this when I had a boost leak.
