I see both of these terms being used iterchangably on the forums as tie rod, tie rod ends, and outer tie rods... is there 1 piece that connects the control arm to the rack, or two pieces outer/inner... this is rather confusing

There are two different pieces. There is the inner tie rod that actually attatches to the steering rack, and then there is an outer tie rod, or tie rod end and that is on the end of the inner tie rod.

thank you for clarifying this, anyone have teins on their cars?, how good is the steering angle now?

They come separated stock.
You need to get aftermarket ones to get increased steering angle.

As stated prior, the inner tie rod is the longer rod that screws into the steering rack.
The outter tie rod screws into the spindle.
They both screw into each other.
Getting the tein is almost pointless being as how they are still filled with grease much like the OEM units.
I suggest purchasing from either SPLparts.com or going with the Peak Performance inner/outters.

do you guys think i will have a problem with the tires rubbing the inner wheel wells at full lock? btw i am using stock wheels and tires for a 90 240 SE, i beleive the offset is about 40mm...

You won't have any rubbing issues.

Yes you will, if you do absolutely nothing to your lip in your frame rail and add spacers it will rub IIRC, depending on the size of the spacer. Stock wheels are such a high offset.

I have tein tie rods/caster rods for right now with 16x8+30 r32 gt-r wheels and 225/50/16 RT615 Azenis with JIC FLTA1's fully maxed out and I rubbed everywhere. I tubbed the front end and now I just rub on the frame rail, hammered the lip down and theres still a pretty good portion that I'm rubbing on.

damn guess i shouldn't even bother to invest in any megan's or spl tie rods, and rather spend the $$ on some wheels with 0 offset first..

Or just don't put the spacer on.
Please don't compare SPL to Megan again...please.

#1 you are from albany... NY? you may want to reconsider getting spl tie rods. my friend has a set and they don't hold up too well here in NJ.
#2 you don't need bump steer correction if you're not very low.
#3 the steering angle spacer is what gives you extra angle. if that's all you want, go to home depot and get some spacers, stack them in there and you're done. rx7 guys do this. and i am not responsible if your shit falls off and someone dies.
#4 the extra steering angle is pretty pointless unless you 1) drift 2) make alot of tight u-turns 3) enjoy weird angles while parking.
#5 ur tie rod ends are probably done cuz they are mad fukn old. they should probably be replaced. probably.

i'd just advise you to stay away from megans. there outer tie rod ends have a baaad history. do a quick search and you'll find out what im talkin about. (outer ones stripping out)
my friend has tein's...not bad for the price, they're only a little bit more than a good brand of oem style ones (but not much a difference betsides that spacer)

#1 yeah i take the back roads
#2 i wasn't worried about bump steer, i was looking to replace the oem tie rods because i don't want shit falling off and people dying, but i was also considering upgrading because i do plan to drift this car after I do all the proper maintenance on it.. but now i see that rubbing might become an issue sooooo.. fk it ill go with OEM
#3 ditto
#4 yes i do plan on drifting this thing..
Im also considering upgrading the tension rods... since the bushings are shot anyway

I would recommend you make use of the search button.
Oh, and look under the car. That would have answered your question without even making a thread. So would visiting ANY aftermarket parts website.

If you want to 'upgrade' your tie rods then consider getting SPL Z32 ones, specially if you plan to drift. If you just want to replace the worn oem ones then Moog makes decent ones. Tein's are overpriced OEM parts.

if anything, oem is overpriced compared to tein. ;)
tein charges you about 70-80 for a pair of inners while nissan wants 70-80 PER 240sx inner, 100+ for 300zx inners.
i'm going to be the oddball and say tein is fine if you want a brand name oem comparable replacement.

+1 on aznpoopy, Ive found that the tein inners are about as cheap as it gets! Although it would suck to have the hardened rod not bend in a light wreck and bust your steering rack up!

Exactly why I just went with Moog OEM replacements with spacers. I picked up a pair of Moog inners for $50 from car-part.com. I would much rather bend a tie rod then ruin my steering rack.

Not that this hasn't been answered, but I have teins with the spacers. I rub with 205/55 and 195/60 on stock rims.
