Your tax dollars at work: The US Navy will be spending about $600,000 to redesign or camouflage a 1960s barracks building (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i8o4u2vVJlLcEt_tFMtGnH_sYJ4w) in San Diego because of complaints that it looks like a swastika (http://searchengineland.com/070927-113222.php) when viewed from the air. In the past this might have been a problem only for the occasional air traveler who happened over Coronado island, but with the advent of aerial mapping and visualization tools like Google Earth, everyone can see anything from the sky. In fact, many people have made a game out of finding oddities in satellite photos (http://googlesightseeing.com/).Now it's one thing to see landmarks like this and snicker over a designer's missteps 40 years ago (the Navy says it noticed the shape but that it didn't think anyone would see it from above), but it's another thing altogether to complain to the Navy about the shape of a building when viewed from space. But people really seem to have the time on their hands: The Navy says it's been inundated with complaints (http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/52274/); enough, I suppose, to justify spending that much money on new structures and extra bushes. It's the first known case of its kind.
So what will the building look like when the job is done, I wonder? A set of four connected squares? A pinwheel formed from triangles? Post your ideas for what the Navy ought to do out of the wayward swastika here and we'll see if we can't pass them along to the powers that be.

sucky for the san diegians..

i was at the irvine spectrum the other day and there was a bamboo kiosk thing that had a bunch of swastika's on it... i asked the owner of the kiosk and he said it's an ancient korean tradition. heh. the nazi's just ruined it for everyone, kinda like how people associate gay's with rainbows. its just a bunch of colors.

anyway, i wiki'd this.. apparently, the swastika is big in india too. i think asian one's are backwards, but whatever.

Children light lamps in the shape of Swastika, on the eve of Diwali (the eve of Hindu new year), a major Hindu festival.

it didn't mean what we all associate it with until the nazis took it. nobody can see that it looks like a swastika unless they're looking at it with google maps. this is fucking retarded.

DONE and fucking DONE.

$600,000?? Fuck that, i redesigned the entire building in 10 minutes AND proved once again, how superior Los Angeles is over shitty ass San Diego.

I hate San Diego. Dont get me wrong, I love the blonde ladies out there. But what THE fuck......... everything is a freeway? every fucking place you need to go, you have to drive. you cant walk anywhere.

fuck man, i hate suburbia. all the neighborhoods have these stupid names, "la trista, make a left on la puesta, right on pendejo way, left on pinche le puto, park at 11221 maricone ave." gaddamn that shit drives me nuts.

LA sucks a lot, but its still a lot better than SD. i like a few neighborhoods in sd, mostly the beach areas where you can still walk to SMALL SHOPS. not target, best buy, and wallmart.

fuck!

It's the Nazis who used it backwards. Traditionally it's a symbol of peace in Buddhist culture. Ironically enough.

San diego pwns LA... you have to drive everywhere in LA just like you do in SD. :P

I mean... any place that can party its ass off like san diego deserves some sort of rep. :)

At either rate, I remember seeing this on google earth a looong time ago.. I had to chuckle.

Ditto. The Nazi's made it a bad symbol in modern America and Europe. I didn't know what to think when I got to Japan and saw them. Then, I started getting more into the culture and educating myself on it more. It is truly all about being educated and knowing the true meaning of things.

People need to remember not EVERY swastika is associated with Nazi Germany... but on the flip side, people so still need to be sensitive... especially with holocaust survivors and war vets still alive today. But I think this is a little ridiculous. lol

People are idiots and ignorant. In most religions, the swastika is a symbol of peace and shit like that. The nazis screwed everything up, but if people educated themselves, we wouldnt have to waste money like this, cuz somebody saw a symbol from the air and just automatically assume its evil. Even though the swastika has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years.

i saw this and thought it was retarded.
i mean i would think its bad, if the people who occupied it where the kkk or some german white power group or something. but who is going to drive by this place and notice it? it would be a total waste of money if you ask me.

makes you think what the people where thinking when it was designed then approved.

one of our court house has swastika patterns in its tiled floor. its in a redneck city so i dont think anyone else has ever noticed the repeating design over and over all over the floors...

It is San Diego, the weather man has to do SOMETHING while he's looking at the satelite pictures all day.

we drive everywhere in san diego because we actually can. If I wanted to walk everywhere I'd move to fly over land.
