Well today I got the best present any teenager could hope for, a quote from the insurance company. Now you see, I was under the impression that I could register my father as the main driver and myself as an occasional. This way I would pay a mere ~$1300 Canadian a year for insurance, which is fine.
Oh, but as the whole universe is against me, I realized today that I have to register myself as a primary driver, due to the fact that my mother doesn't have a license and my father cannot be registered as primary on both. Well la-di-frickin'-da, my quote suddendly balloned from ~$1300 a year, to ~$5500 a year. God I love insurance companies
So, in other words, my dream of owning a 240 has been thrown down, beaten, pissed on, and beaten once again. Lovely isn't it?
I would be able to take this better, if say, my father drove a BMW and put me on occasional. But no, once again the automotive gods had to rein down and grant me the privelege of driving a 1999 Ford Taurus. FWD + 3300 lbs. + 145 hp + automatic = ... well I'm sure you can guess.
A shame too, considering I have a few grand saved up from working construction in the summer. Plus I'm still working part time now, while in school; was hoping that would be mod money.
*Cliff Notes:
17 year old raped up the ass by an insurance company
Dreams shattered
Urge to commit suicide...rising.
Thanks for listening to my vent.
i assume that is full coverage... have you checked out cibc.
dont worry about getting the car now then. if you have a little money just stay thrifty and get an even better car next year. ur insurance can only go down. and in the mean time do the research.

That is nearly IMPOSSIBLE for a liability quote for a full year. You need to shop around for some more quotes. Find a shitty little place. Don't go to the big guys, they rip you off,but give great service when needed. That sounds like a full coverage quote to me.

my insurance premium is about 3k a year, or about 250 dollars a month... this includes full coverage on my '97 240sx and '02 jetta gls; liability on my '88 accord lxi and '93 prelude vtec...
i guess it helps to be 25, married, homeowner, have a child, and a clean record...

How old are you guys that are paying out your ass? How many previous driving infractions? And what level of license do you have?
I'm canadian as well. For my 1990 240sx coupe, I was going to pay $2400/yr for collision/comprehensive, and now with the full G license, its down to $1800.
I have one ticket for doing 120 in an 80, and that's it. I was warned by the insurance company, that its 3 strikes before they start hammering you.
Hope that helps.

I may not be f#$ked out the ass after all.
I might be able to change my address so I live in the same house as my sister. (She lives alone in another city). This way she can be the primary and have me as secondary.
Since she's 25 and a girl, her insurance would be barely anything. She doesn't own her own car now, so it could work.
I'd just have to "live in another city" on paper. Wish me luck so it works out.. cuz if it does, I should only have to pay something like $1300 a year, and I'm garaging the car during the winter, so even less.

Well in canada it goes like this
when you turn 16 you go for your
G1
Written Test (Multiple Choice)
Conditions, Must have a lisenced driver with you (a person with a G class for atleats 5 years)
No Major Highway driving and something like no drivng between midnight and 5 am
ZERO blood Alcohol level
You must have you G1 for a year before you can go for G2 unless you have drivers ed then its 8 months
G2
Basic Roadtest
Conditions
You can drive alone, Zero blood alcohol level, on some highways (no 400 series highways)
Unrestricted for everything else
G
Road test on the highway
Final Class lisence
You can now drive any G class veichle... Car, Truck, Van under a certian weight class... like anything under 10,000lbs? im not 100% sure....
yea and if you dont get your G class in like 6 years after you get your G1 and you just booting around with a G2 you get booted down to a G1 again...
I remember the pre 1994 days when you just showed up and wrote a test and you could drive...
Which was more dangerious i mean you had less experance...
Now they space it out and give you time to learn...
But i heard something about they want to raise the G1 age to 18 now and no longer 16.... thats terrible for all the young ones out there.... who are like 15 and are desperate to show off there lisence.. lol
Also they want to jack the limits on some highways 20km/h higher...

Actually, with a G2, you CAN drive on 400 series highways alone.
So the only restriction is the zero blood alcohol level.

Sounds kind of like NY (at least 6 yrs ago when I lived there)
16- you can get your permit if you pass the written test (20 multiple obvious answer test and you can get up to 4 wrong iirc).
You must take one class and then can take your road test once you have your permit.
Pass the road test and you get a junior license
No driving between like 6am-9pm unless to work or school.
Can't leave the state, no driving in NYC
At 17 w/ driver's ed or 18 w/o you get your senior license which is just a full license.
Edit:: As a side note, I just looked up what my insurance would be on a new porsche boxster if I got married and I would actually save $100 (over my current policy, and about $20 on the quote I'm getting online) per year on insurance over my current 93 240 while I'm single. Yeah, that sounds right?!

Well, that's pretty harsh. I live in Winnipeg and I went to go get an insurance quote for when I get my 240 (still looking) and they said with absolutely full coverage ($100 deductible, all-purpose, $5,000,000 getting sued crap) under my Mom's name (she has all the merit points) it would cost only $1300-1400. I like only having one car insurance company.

ok, well thats cause your under your moms name.
The restrictions under G2 are no blood alcohol and only as many people in the car as there are seatbelts, and all must be wearing them or it goes against you (usually goes against the person with there seatbelt off)
I pay 2450 a year for basic liability, thats from TD insurance in ontario, i am 18, i have my G2 and a clean driving record, and thats ON MY OWN. thats 203 a month, not bad, my car is a 93 240sx fastback SE.
at 20 and with no accidents/tickets, I was paying 1,900 USD/year for liability only.
Come renewall, I will have one ticket and still be 20, and plan(hope) to pay the same amount +/- $100.

I've had it with Merle and Mable in their Grand Marquis cruising at 105kph, then cut me off to pass the guy doing 100. Takes them 5 minutes to pass the damned car. I'm 18 now and I drive an '89 Plymouth Sundance.
I live in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.
I am the primary driver on the vehicle.
I pay $900/year for insurance. Liability only though, because I don't give a shite about the car.
I just used that Insurancehotline.com link to check my insurance rates if I were primary driver on an '89 240SX, it would be $2417/year. Not TOO bad... $200/month.
Also, if I were registered as the secondary driver, I'd still be paying only $917/year. Kickass!
THEN: Since my dad works for Chrysler and thus drives a company vehicle, I could be registered as an occasional driver on the 240, thus making it even cheaper.

However, I know more girls that drive faster than me, and in town. Get pulled over, and the cops let them go. Girls will always have the better insurance rates. The best we can hope for is equality in rates.

Where did you read that little arab men get $500k to come to the states and start a business?
White males are not that bad off. Until this country is run by someone of an ethic/ gender other than yours, I wouldn't worry too much, I'm not.
I remember reading a while back that women's accidents are starting to come back in line with male accidents since there are many more female drivers in recent years than there have been previously.
I subscribe to the theory that more guys get into accidents for knowingly doing something stupid (like racing), whereas girls get into more accidents by simply doing something stupid (like driving off a straight road). Keep in mind this is based on the stories I remember from high school.
Like one winter a guy got stuck in the middle of the soccer field after doing donuts and had to wait 3 weeks to get his car out. Kind of made ID'ing the driver pretty easy when the car is on file for the hs parking lot and all the skidmarks in the field end at the car that's stuck there. Same winter a girl in my class got run off the road because she decided not to wait for the plow (turning off a plowed street onto unplowed street) to go by and instead cut it off and drove in front of it, only to get stuck and plowed off the road.
