havent driven the car in 5 months, now problems!

the battery in my 240 died about 5 months ago. and due to many reasons/distractions, i havent done anything about it since. so for about 5 months, the car has just been sitting outside doing nothing. well today i finally decided to do something about it and bought a new battery from autozone. so i installed the new on, and also topped off the brake fluid cuz i saw it was pretty much empty.....i start to drive off and i step on the brake, and it just goes all the way down. I HAVE NO BRAKES!! so when it stopped, i start to pump it for about a minute, and nothing. i turn the car off, and start pumping, and it works. but then when i start it again, it goes back to being dead. so i give up and get out of the car. at that point i smell gas. i look in the back and i see that the car has leaked and is still leaking fuel!!....what the hell?!!??!

summary: car not started in 5 months. brakes are now gone. i try to pump it, but it goes away whenever the car is on. AND fuel leakage in the back.

1) what could be wrong with the brakes?
2) do i need to replace the entire tank now?
3) are these things normal after a long period of non-operation?

fuel can be leaking from fuel lines as well not necessarily the tank. And about the brakes i am not entirely sure so i am not even going to comment about it.

Fuel is more than likely from a Dry-rotted hose. Brakes.... Is there any leaks that you can see? Take a look at every hose connection on every wheel and make sure there is nothing wet. Check all the lines coming out of the booster too.

the reason you have no brakes is because air got sucked into your break lines due to the fact that you let the brake master cylinder run empty... all you have to do is bleed the brakes and you wont get that mushy feeling in your brake pedal... as for the fuel leak.. get under there and find out where its leaking from...

The only way that the fluid could get low is if you have a leak. Fill up the fluid, bleed it, and pump the pedal really hard and look for fluid. As far as the fuel leak goes the lines are probably rotted, I have seen it several times on other 240's.

also, check the o-ring on the fuel sending unit, and check the function of your fuel pump.

Are you sure it's not leaking break fluid? Might smell like gas just cause it hasn't been started in a while. Fuel lines under the car are made of metal, I believe.

Brake fluid likes to eat through shit and has prolly eaten through a seal in the master cylinder.. I suggest rebuilding that and properly bleeding the brakes.

As far as fuel goes... I'm guessing that the drain bolt in your tank could possibly be leaking since most fuel lines are metal there's really not much that can leak in the rear....

mine did the same thing when i was in the process of rebuilding it.
more like keeping it on the back burner, lol.

i didnt experience any fuel leakage, but i did find my BMC was empty beyond just re-filling.

good thing i didnt drive w.o bleeding it properly.

Where did you find this "fuel"? Im fairly sure you blew a seal somewhere in the brakes and it splooged onto other shit. I thought my car was pussing all over itself. When I put it up on the lift, I realized my passenger rear caliper took a shit and :wackit: brake fluid everywhere.

UPDATE: well i decided it was too much work for me to do myself, so i took it to a mechanic. he found that the BMC was fukd, so it had to be replaced. then he had to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel lines....total cost: $410....not too bad i guess....
