... it help the ride?  I have 65K on my '97 and I am really considering buying new ones.  Factory struts / shocks are $250 for the set.  All the after markets I have seen are ~$400.  Is it worth the premium?

Yes.  Yes.  KYB AGXs are now available for the s14 for around $400.  There aren't many upgrades you can make for that kind of money that will have such a significant effect.
